When I say ‘most disappointing ever’, I’m using it clearly not in terms of playback quality (which we don’t know yet, but will surely be up to Arrow’s typically amazing standards), but in terms of what this release realistically might’ve been vs. what we’re actually getting. Call it hyperbole, if you wish, but I stand by the statement. I also wish you would quit contorting people’s “we had justification for believing” into “we had incontrovertible proof this would happen!”

I'm less disappointed in the exclusion of the TV cut - which introduces problems of its own - and more disappointed that Arrow didn't (couldn't?) dig up some magical, long-unseen workprint at the same time they were granted access to the original negatives. I know it's a big ask, but given the similarities between Dune and Alien³, I'd always hopes that some day we might get a similar 'assembly cut' treatment. But hey, it looks like it's gonna be a terrific, extras-stuffed package regardless. I love Dune, warts and all, and seeing it in 4K ought to be a revelation.

Well he did hate that extended TV cut so much he had his name removed from the credits, while he's more or less made peace with the theatrical cut, so it makes sense.

The extended cut is interesting but I think the theatrical is better anyway, can't wait to watch this one in 4K.

Yes but you’re so mad aboot that one single aspect, Marvin the Martian-style, that you seemed 99.9% sure it would happen, and gave several reasons for expecting it in the same post (Waterworld, the delay). As always, I just gotta puncture those expectations.

And what we’re getting is still an almost absurdly well-stacked package, apart from the extended cut.

Aye, for something that he literally took his name off of there are a hell of a lot of assumptions that it was gonna be included. The outlier is of coursh Universal releasing the extended cut on an official DVD, that shirley can’t have happened without Lynch's approval, but as he’s such a prickly customer you can’t take anything for granted.

So the TC is considered to better than the EC anyway? Then I'm completely fine with what Arrow is bringing to the table and will pre-order asap.
Huge Lynch Fan but have never seen Dune and frankly don't know much about it either.

Could be worse...at least this isn’t getting the Lost Highway treatment.

Cut to: a tweet from Lynch denouncing this release and Arrow being forced to release a barebones Blu-ray of the older master.

I kid. Hopefully.

I can't wait to revisit this since I have read the book since I saw it last time. I am sure the film make a lot more sense this time.

I hope to see a 4K Blu-ray release including both the Theatrical and the Extended Cuts of the film on HDR10 and Dolby Vision and 5.1 and 2.0 tracks and a booklet and new and original artwork. Let's keep our fingers crossed to be available very soon just like with The Frighteners also by Universal.

Nah, it wasn't supposed to be announced until tomorrow. Zavvi jumped the gun (and the pre-order has since been taken down).

I wouldn't call myself a Lynch fan (I adore Mulholland Drive though), but I've never seen Dune completely either. And didn't really like what I have seen. And am actually looking much more forward to seeing the new one.

DR Herbert West is quite right on that point (which you want from a doctor , amiright?). I’ll say this—if you’ve never read the novel, I might possibly be able to get a sense of why you’d prefer the TC, but in a million years, I’ll never be able to fathom how anyone who has actually read the Frank Herbert novel would prefer the TC to the EC.

I find the EC more watchable. The TC feels like a highlight reel of moments from the book put in order without any real connective tissue to bring them together, especially after Paul and Jessica go into the desert.

Despite the interesting looking extras I have no interest without the extended cut. I would have even accepted a new transfer of the SD cut from the DVD.

I tried watching my extended DVD a few months ago and it's apparently fallen to disc rot and wouldn't work about 2/3 of the way through. I guess I need to start looking for another copy on the used market.

And I suppose I can find a copy of the theatrical on Blu for slightly better image quality on that version.
