Phenomena is a weird one because yes, not only are Pleasance and Connelly delivering their own lines, it seems to be on-set recording. But the rest of the English dubbing is really weak and makes the film lamer that it should be.

I wonder if Arrow could revisit their 2015/2016 giallo titles (Solange, Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave etc) for 4k UHD and fix all the silly Ritrovata colour issues?

I was actually wondering about that the other day, whether their other gialli would also get the 4K UHD treatment.

I completely agree. As soon as Connelly or Pleasance aren't on screen the film loses it's seriousness to me. Also if I remember correctly there are a few spots where the track reverts to Italian (lines for which no English was recorded?). For that alone I'd probably not revisit the English dub of Phenomena. Besides to be honest whoever dubbed Connelly in Italian did it so well you'd think she also spoke Italian and dubbed herself. I have no idea how the Italian voice actors managed to dub so convincingly but I can only assume it was the long history and experience doing it all the time that leads to such quality voice overs.

Inferno is one of my least favorites in English because it almost makes the movie into a parody (unintentionally of course). Suspiria never does that to me, so I find it watchable in English. I will point out that the ending is more effective in Italian though, in my opinion, but I guess works well enough either way.

I'd be interested to see what the UHD of Cat O'Nine Tails looks like. The BD is very dark and pink, and seems to swallow up a lot of detail in a heavy murk.

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

Oh, and I must say this:

DEEP RED is set in Torino (Piemonte). I live in Naples (Campania). Well, I can sure you that even here in Naples, there are several old buildings looking like Helga and Marc/Marcus Daly's one, and their landings and elevators look 100% similar and similarly creepy as the ones in the movie!
I'm 43, and it scares the shit out of me just thinking about DEEP RED when it's night and I'm in one of those alone! LOL.
They are buildings built in the late fifties/early sixties.

I can take pictures...

I know what you mean. The scene where the
[Show spoiler]girl is caught shoplifting near the beginning
is so laughable and goofy-sounding it almost ruined the movie for me lol.

There's a creepy Peter Lorreish character who, thanks to dubber Nick Alexander, sounds like Donald Sutherland!

My experience of Naples was rather unfortunate. I was there about ten or eleven years ago during the time when the city was in the middle of a long-running refuse strike. There was a staggering amount of rubbish everywhere! It was truly shocking, and I'll never forget the smell! Shortly after I travelled to Capri, what a contrast that was! I love Italy though, my last visit was late 2019 before the pandemic took hold of the Lombardy region.

I'm 100% sorry for that. It was a terrible moment. Granted, the city is still unfortunately in the hands of Neapolitan
[Show spoiler]left
wing politicians (FOR NOW - we vote in October), but at least we "fixed" that terrible scenario.

Don't apologize, it was a small part of a wonderful trip. I would happily return there one day.

Deep Red is better Geoff. And what might also be of interest is that Goblin's music in Deep Red is so grooooovy - even better than Dawn for me!

That sounds awesome. The architecture of the Daly's house was so haunting. Combined with Goblin's soundtrack is a big part of what makes it such an unforgettable film in my opinion. Must be amazing to walk around places reminiscent of the film, and must give some good day time nightmares. lol

Would love to see some pictures if you ever have the time.

Yes, I'll take some snapshots when I'm in one of these buildings (we call those "Palazzi").
Beware, the similarity is somewhat uncanny, and believe me, you'd not like to be alone at 3:00 AM, walking among the various floors. LOL

This is a brief "excerpt" that I wrote years ago:

The Sabre-Toothed Tiger Killer Timeline:

[Show spoiler]Martha, Carlo's mother, was the "Sabre-Toothed Tiger Killer" (in its early stages, Argento wanted to title the movie "The Sabre-Toothed Tiger", then changed his mind).

She was a very famous and talented actress, but a psychopath/psychotic too. Psychopaths are born, not created, and she was one of them.

Anonymously and far from Italian paparazzi, she rented (or bought) an house in Rome - the "Haunted Mansion" featured in the movie. Nobody knew she was living in there, apart the very few persons she trusted in.

Her husband wanted her to be hospitalized and "cured", but she refused. On Christmas's eve, she slaughtered the husband in front of Carlo's eyes - her little child. The infamous childish song was playing in the background.

She "buried" the room and the corpse through newly-constructed walls. How did she manage to do that by herself? Well, psychopaths have many resources and their I.Q. is vastly higher than average. They are also stronger than us.

Most likely, she went to Police and warned them her husband was "missing". They investigated the surroundings and found no evidence. The case was soon archived after months or 1 year.

In the while, Martha moved away with her child/boy. However, Carlo was so much traumatized that he used to secretly visit the silent house and play the song again... and he also used to SCREAM like a crazy as well. That created the "curse legend" surrounding the mansion and reported on the book.

The house was then bought by someone else and Martha was then obviously "forced" to kill the new occupant before he would discover the hidden room.

The "accidental death" reinforced and cemented the terrible legend surrounding the house. Nobody purchased the mansion anymore.

Amanda wrote the book, but used a photograph depicting the house BEFORE Martha and her husband would buy/rent it. Thus, the hidden room was still visible on the picture.

P.s: Martha used green eye lens when she killed Amanda as part of a "possible" disguise/to not be recognized.

once you get to very early 90s Italian horror/sci-fi films like Night Killer and Shocking Dark, the English audio is 100% the original on-set audio for sure.

Great analysis/explanation of the events that took place. It's such a disturbing and haunting movie. Truly one of the best.
