United Kingdom Yesterday's episode of The Footage Detectives

On the whole, it was a very enjoyable edition of The Footage Detectives (two mugs on the table in front of Mike and Noel). Informative segments, including some genuinely funny banter between Mike and Noel, including the end with the crossed arms (the lady who wrote in isn't the only person who observes the funny ending most weeks). I was creased up by the remark about encores.

Some of the funny jokes and remarks I can't remember, but they're part of why I look forward to watching this show each Sunday. Certain other channels could learn a lesson from this series.

I found the theme of yesterday's special about driving lessons and information films etc. fascinating. And I totally agreed with what Mike said about indicators and seeing things before they happen, as I see it a lot myself (if I was going to sarcastic on these observations, I'd say a lot of cars don't come equipped with indicators).

United Kingdom Film The Last Page (aka Man Bait)

After The Footage Detectives and The Saint, watched last night a film called The Last Page (one of it's other titles is Man Bait). One of the better films I've seen on TPTV lately (a good story and a tense, satisfying ending). The only actor who I recognised was Diana Dors (I've read a bit about her, and was struck by another female actor in the film, Marguerite Chapman (never heard of her before).

Got set to record in the next week, TPTV screenings of film Confession (airing on Sunday 10th July at 10.05 pm - 11.55 pm) and a film short called A Tale of Two Fjords - Glimpses (airing on Monday 11th July at 5.45 am - 6 am).

United Kingdom The Footage Detectives, The Saint and Confession

Very, very good (and enjoyable) edition of The Footage Detectives yesterday afternoon. The recurring joke about Mike 'dressing up' from Noel, along with the black PVC mac, and a lady Mike saw at the hairdressers who opened the door for him (or vice versa) were examples of this show being on form and enjoyable. The segment mentioned in the listings which I enjoyed quite a bit was about the Lyons teahouses. Then before the end there was an unexpected discussion of Francis Durbridge which tied in to at least one of the viewer letters in Letters to the Projectionist, where Mike and Noel also spoke about a Jack Hedley series and another intriguing series called The Scarf.

Regarding yesterday evening's second series episode of The Saint, "The Elusive Ellshaw", was there more than one actor who played the recurring detective character who dosen't always get on with Templar? It was a different actor in this episode.

Finally, watched a very good film on TPTV last night, Confession. The only actor who I recognised was a younger Ronald Allen. The music score set the mood very well. It was longer than any of the other films I've watched on TPTV, but it didn't feel stretched or/and padded out. Well written story.

United Kingdom The Footage Detectives and The Saint

One of the highlights of last Sunday afternoon's new edition of The Footage Detectives, was Mike and Noel talking about TPTV being seven years old. I was thinking that I hope the channel is around in another seven years time. That will keep the vultures at bay (referring to Forces TV closing down). I'm aware that there are lurkers in UK TV Shows and DVD Movies, who sometimes only seem to comment in a negative way (ie. a channel closing down).

I'm expecting Mike and Noel on at least the next two new editions to be suffering in a jetlag-type way, after last weekend's event in Christchurch (the next one is I think going to be in Liverpool (in October).

The Saint episode "Martha", shown last Sunday evening, is one of my favourite episodes so far. Very good story and something which I've seen before on Mannix.

I didn't realise it had been around that long. It's not a channel I watch all that often if I'm honest, but I hope it does stick around as it has a pretty good selection of films which are rarely seen elsewhere. As it happens, I watched The Fall of the House of Usher (Vincent Price) last Friday, as it came on immediately after something my dad was watching (can't remember what that was), and even though I already have this film on Arrow's excellent Blu-ray, I still enjoyed a repeat viewing on Talking Pictures.

Friday night before the Cellar Club (which is now running as repeats of previous club nights by the way), there was nothing wrong with your dad's television set, he was watching The Outer Limits, which must be close to the end of the first season now.

Sadly I know the running order on the channel without needing to look it up

As a result of watching that show and hearing Dominic Frontiere's music every week, I've now had to start rewatching The Invaders again. Because there's a 20 second music segment from The Outer Limits which plays in the pilot episode of The Invaders when David Vincent is carried away (leading into the epilogue). And that's been nagging me to rewatch the dvds every time I heard it on The Outer Limits...

Talking of dads, mine was excited the other week as they are repeating the Hazell series and during one of the episodes dad spotted where he used to work in Wardour Street in the background. It's the only time hes ever spotted it.

That's a proper footage detective! crosses arms

I guess my dad must have had the channel on most of the evening, but he does tend to drift off to sleep briefly from time to time, so he may not have been paying too much attention to what was going on.

I've just been looking at tomorrow night's schedules and Talking Pictures is also showing The Blood On Satan's Claw (Patrick Wymark), followed by another two films. I didn't even know they were screening classic horrors on a Friday night, so hats off to TP. Again, even though I have the above film on disc, I'll probably still watch it here anyway as it has been a while since I last viewed it.

These are the kinds of films which used to crop up back in the days when BBC2 screened late night horror double-bills. Those were the days.

You talking about the late night horror double bills on BBC Two, CV, has reminded me of a thread in this sub-forum for a long-running film season on the same channel. It's been a while since I last checked the thread (was it called Moviedrome?).

In my mind, I've been too'ing and fro'ing between which Blu-ray release of The Blood on Satan's Claw to get (*) (love the front cover artwork on the UK release), wondering if another release might happen.

Another horror film, Beware My Brethren (aka The Fiend) starring Patrick Magee, I've got the VS release of (boutique label 88 Films' UK branch's release is out next week). Don't know if TPTV have shown that.

(*) - Based on Blu-ray.com's database, there have been Blu-ray releases in the States, the UK, Germany and Spain (based on some discussion on this forum, you have to be careful with some Spanish Blu-ray releases of films as some are bootlegs).

The thread I suspect you're thinking of is 'UK TV from the past'. Here, you'll find a list of films screened as part of the Moviedrome series on BBC2, and on the next page you'll see a list of films shown as late night double-bills during the latter half of the 1970's. These were mostly horror movies, but there were some sci-fi films mixed in there too. It's a general nostalgia thread really, where we are very happy to reminisce and discuss anything relating to TV's bygone years.

The current UK blu-ray release of The Blood on Satan's Claw is by Screenbound Pictures. If you're a fan of the film, this is a must-buy. There was an earlier UK release going back a few years (I think it was by Odeon), but I suspect this will be out-of-print by now. Severin have released their version in the US as well.

You're right, there are quite a number of Spanish releases which are bootlegs, so I'd avoid them if possible.

United Kingdom Go Matt Munro, The Footage Detectives and The Saint

This was one of the things I meant to post about last Friday night, but based on what TPTV do with repeat airings (films etc. do get shown again at a later date), this should get shown again as I think the screening this evening was the first showing on TPTV. Have recorded it to (hopefully) watch this week, a music short programme called Go Matt Munro. I don't think this is the same as a similar Matt Munro programme from earlier in the sixties (don't know about this late sixties programme, but the early sixties one had some un-PC stuff in it).

Enjoyed yesterday's new Footage Detectives and yesterday evening's Saint (I looked at the synopsis and was expecting not to like it so much, but I did. Loved the
[Show spoiler]party set-up as a cover for Templar trying to solve the case).

Mike and Noel on yesterday's Footage Detectives did look like they were still recovering from the weekend before last's TPTV Festival in Christchurch. Quite enjoyed the Sir Norman Wisdom segment with the guest talking to Mike and Noel and sharing the video footage with various famous faces (I enjoyed seeing Jack Douglas, along with the bits with Sir Donald Sinden and Norman).

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm sure I saw this a very long time ago - can't remember all that much about it to be honest, but it'll be interesting to watch.

I forgot to set to record on TPTV, a screening of a TV film (the cast including Joan Crawford and Paul Burke), called Della. Having checked it's main IMDb page, it was an unsuccessful TV pilot and was made by Four Star Productions, which means (I think) that the rights are now with Disney. Wondering if TPTV did a deal with 20th Century Fox before the Disney takeover, as I was surprised that Renown Pictures did a DVD release of Stagecoach West: The Complete Series. Had hoped that there would be a DVD release of The June Allyson Show, and that TPTV would show some more episodes (have seen a couple of them on TPTV, one of which June Allyson herself starred in (with actor Daniel O'Herlihy), called "Edge of Fury").

Yes, I saw those June Allyson shows too.

They have shown a number of FSP shows, but they tend to be snuck in at 5am. Currently the FSP shows I'm aware of being shown semi regularly are Honey West Monday am, Burke"s Law season 3 early Friday am and Target:The Corruptors Thursday am, The Rogues Saturday am.

Anthology wise, they show the Dick Powell Theatre which I usually record. Wednesday 3rd at (of course) 5am, Thursday 11th at 9am.

I tend to set up wishlists for any FSP show I wish to see as they do scatter them about the day!

PS I note that the episode of Outer Limits on 12th August features David McCallum and Vera Miles.

The Onedin Line starts in the 9pm Sunday slot from 4th September. First thing I spotted from the trailer was that Mr Grimsdale is one of the main cast...

United Kingdom The Footage Detectives (inc. Who is Harry Dodge?)

I'm beginning to wonder now if each edition of The Footage Detectives is filmed around ten to fourteen days before the transmission date, as based on Noel and Mike's appearance on last Sunday afternoon's new edition, it could have been the first edition filmed after the TPTV Festival in Christchurch (it was on the weekend where the July heatwave started).

On a recent edition of The Footage Detectives (something like two or three weeks ago), they mentioned The Whistler (think it was the series of films). Do HD masters exist for this film series? I would have thought this would have been right up Powerhouse Films/Indicator's street, with them having a/having had a deal with Sony.

Something else I made a note of which was mentioned by Noel and Mike during their conversations/discussions recently, was film serial Riders of Death Valley. Could swear I spotted this in the Sky TV listings for TPTV this week.

I still chuckle when I hear the music jingle played before Letters to the Projectionist. Glad I made a note of this as I wouldn't have remembered much (three different topics - a bar of chocolate, Mike Read (not Noel's co-presenter) and a female singer heard and seen on an episode of the TV series Maigret.

And to finish with the question: who is Harry Dodge? Fascinating mystery on last Sunday's new edition.

United Kingdom The Saint and The Champions

Last Sunday evening's episode of The Saint (called "Iris"), I wasn't sure if it was going to be a good one, despite the interesting-sounding plot. In the end, I quite enjoyed it once it got going in the second half
[Show spoiler](a blackmail plot involving Templar).
David Bauer guest-starred again (in this episode, he sounded more like he did in Bond films You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever).

This past Wednesday night's episode of The Champions ("The Body Snatchers") was an interesting one for me, because of two of the guest stars being from the Bond film series (Bernard Lee (who played 'M' for seventeen years) and Philip Locke (both starred in Thunderball). One of the better episodes so far.

I did notice the "heatwave edition" as they were in t shirts and (most telling of all) there were NO MUGS!

So I think 2 weeks ahead seems a good guestimate.

As for Harry Dodge...
(Visualise Spartacus ending)
I'm Harry Dodge.
No I'm Harry Dodge...

To have been at the Miss Film/Movie competitions in 1972 and 1973, he must have been involved with them somehow

I was thinking earlier today, you know what they should do with the table which usually has the mugs on them..have some cocktails on there (Pina Colada for example) and Mike and Noel wearing summery hats. (and that's not taking the mickey out of them, but in keeping with their humour on the show).

Tomorrow afternoon's new edition has Jess Conrad OBE on as a guest. The Saint meanwhile has a guest cast which includes Oliver Reed in an early screen role, along with Warren Mitchell (I'm assuming playing the cab driver for the third time).

Also, airing on TPTV next Saturday afternoon is something which made me think of The Plank, because the cast includes Eric Sykes, Rhubarb (1969). It was also directed by Sykes. Also starring are Harry Secombe, Jimmy Edwards, Kenneth Connor and Hattie Jacques. It's on from 3.40 pm - 4.25 pm.
