I'm a minimalist in the sense that I don't impulse purchase little knick knacks to fill empty spaces on tables or walls. Hell, even my fridge is only stocked with Seltzer water and a few packets of condiments. I don't see the point of buying stuff to fill voids, either physical or spiritual. When it comes to home entertainment, though, I scratch my head whenever I hear people say they'd rather not let their guests see their collections or even their electronic equipment and go out of their way to hide them

Now, there may be a subset of people who simply prefer the clean look of minimalism - that's something else entirely. Maybe they watched a Season or two of Hoarders on A&E and became traumatized Personally, I couldn't live with a 40 inch TV hanging on a wall and me sitting 10-15 feet away with nothing under the TV except a bare table

This is kinda where I am with blu ray vs. 4K.

Which is fine with me.

The difference is rather substantial especially if you have a quality HDR 10 or Dolby Vision display.

Watching a ton of older 70's and 80's horror films like I do tends to lessen the impact from my experience. Watching a more modern effort or something that came from a major studio (regardless of decade produced) tends to produce more dramatic results. There's only so much 4k can do when budget constraints and poor film stock were inherent in the production. 4k still provides the most faithful presentation for sure, but the pop/wow isn't always apparent in picture/audio quality when compared to a Blu Ray disc produced from the same master. As close to 90% of my movie watching is older horror films these days the impact 4k has had has been subtle for me as well.

This of course also fails to mention studios simply upscaling 2K DI's or releasing 4k's without HDR ala a number or Indie horror efforts from RJE.

This has sort of been my experience as well; it's not like one 4K movie will always look better than another blu ray movie, it depends on the movie itself, and a lot of movies won't benefit as much from 4K as maybe more modern movies will.

If I see a side-by-side, sure, I can see the differences.

But if I'm just watching a movie and not doing any sort of comparison, blu ray is definitely "good enough."

And like I said, that's fine with me. 4K is a rabbit hole I'm hoping to avoid going down. Part of it is concern that the more 4K I watch, the more sensitive I'll get to the upgrade and the less satisfied I'll be with blu ray, but also I just don't want to feel compelled to start upgrading my existing movies. And it would be a compulsion.

I don't really know what other people think of my collection. I don't find myself asking people their opinion about my stuff.

Maybe I don't ask because I don't really care or maybe because doing so kinda puts the person being asked on the spot to say something nice? I see these kind of questions as compliment fishing expeditions and I just don't need anyone's affirmation of my choices. Making negative comments about someone else's hobby or passion just strikes me as being unnecessary at best and rude at worst.

As I don't tolerate rude people in my home, I can't recall anyone bashing my collection. Some of my guests have been mesmerized by it if the time they spent looking through it is any indication.

Watching 4K discs has in no way lessened my enjoyment of blu-rays or even DVDs for that matter. I usually become too immersed in what I am watching to concern myself with any format's limitations.

I do not feel compelled to upgrade, either. I do upgrade titles, certainly, but only when I feel my interest in the title and the benefits of a specific upgrade warrant the cost.

To be fair, it's a substantial difference in price. I'd imagine < 1% of F13 viewers would pay that kind of premium over the cheap dvd and blu alternatives around that price. But it is kind of silly to call someone dumb over it. There are a lot of things I don't always understand either. I usually look for the cheapest golf balls I can find while I know others who won't play with any less than the best ones money can buy. At my level, the difference is perhaps noticeable but not something I want to spend a lot of money on. I'd imagine for a lot of people who watch movies, the difference is there but not deemed necessary enough to justify the higher prices.

That's nice for you, but would not be true for me. And your first statement is as much a justification for ignoring 4K as it was for supporting it.

I can see where it might look that way, but I most definitely appreciate what each successive format has to offer over its predecessor. It's just that I also know how to be happy with what I already have.
