Low bitrates introduce macroblocking. Though, using the encode-o-matic instead of somebody that can spot these things is definitely part of the problem too. Ever wonder why people gush over David M encodes? This is the reason. His don’t have these errors.

I would advise you to not go looking for it if you don't see it - ignorance is bliss

If you really want to know:
[Show spoiler]See here, the grain is not displayed properly and instead you get those macroblocks on his jacket, whereas when properly encoded, it should look more like this

Man, I really don't see a difference between both. Like you said, ignorance is bliss, so I guess i'll still look forward to this release. :P
Thanks for taking the time to explain, thought!

Saying that the encoding macro-blocking complaints are annoying and overblown is called a different opinion, not trolling.

There is no real difference. That's what I'm saying. This is a "problem" that has plagued this community since the beginning. And there are always zoomed in screenshots that look nearly identical.

Obviously there are egregious exceptions, but for the most part it's not noticeable.

No, you must see it, you must analyze it, it must become one with your psyche. This is the way of the blu-ray collector. (I am 100% kidding, and I'm glad that I don't notice it like others do, it's one less thing I worry over - I do this on a regular basis with my own job, I don't need to do it with the stuff I want to enjoy)

In all seriousness, I'm staying away from Svet's opinions from now on. He's neither here nor there anymore - was he ever really here to begin with? I was a little deflated seeing the video score and reading his comments. I do believe he exaggerates his opinion to the extent where I no longer can believe him.

Bear in mind the same reviewer has no issue's with Criterion's shoddy release of My Private Idaho.

Yes, low bit rates can cause macroblocking. My point is they probably dedicated most of the space on the BD50 to the movie so in this case the culprit is sloppy encoding. A similar thing happened on La Piscine, the bit rate hovered in the 30s but there was still macroblocking reported.

Based on the rest of the 'review', that seems more likely
I’m sure there is macroblocking but I doubt it’s any more extreme than most other Criterion releases.

There are Blu-ray.com reviewers I don't like, but Svet isn't one of them. Do I always agree with him? Hell no. But I like that he doesn't pander and isn't afraid to give his unorthodox opinions, no matter how unpopular they might be with the forum. Granted, it's resulted in endless mockery of the guy pretty much any time his name comes up. But I hope he doesn't change to appease his critics, even if sometimes I think he's wrong.

BluProofie is right though; I do remember being annoyed back in the day that Svet was Criterion's biggest fanboy and seemingly gave a pass to nearly every one of their releases. Now he's far more critical - deservedly so - and not trying to stay in their good graces (sucking up to labels is another problem I have with reviewers so it's good to see he's stopped). Criterion is another institution that's been captured by woke ideology. The New York Times ran a piece "calling them out" over their lack of "diversity" and that seemed to spook Criterion enough to really go off the deep end. But since I'm sure there are adherents to this ideology on Blu-ray.com, I won't go any further with this line of thought because I don't want to ignite a firestorm.

I didn't check on who the reviewer was.. Didn't realize it was Dr. Svet. I definitely take any of his comments (on the film itself or PQ) with a grain of salt.

Will be looking for other reviews now..

I was just checking the review for this film, and it looks like one of the lightest bunch of special features I've seen from a Criterion film. Don't know if anyone actually enjoys those radio broadcast supplements, and a commentary is ok, but hard to believe that's all they could come up with for this film.

It's a bit hard to pack a film with when everyone involved with the production is dead and you can't add any archival extras since the previous home video releases had 0 extras on it.

All these 4k users are pushing their compression ideology on everyone.

Shoving it down our throats.

So much resolution grooming among the newer collectors, not sure if we'll recover.

Meanwhile, I'm gonna enjoy my DVD of Unfaithully Yours, something the corrupt media will never report.
