Huh? Universal are famous for their elevated blacks. This title is actually faithful to its intented cinematography. Dark inky blacks was the style back then.

Huh? Universal love to crush the shit out of the blacks. Those early discs with the blacks lifted to 0.005 nits to match the metadata are the exception.

I would say it's more that they don't tend to raise them unlike say Warner and then it's just a matter of preference. When you get used to the blacks always being lifted on this format, the opposite can come across as crushing. I would say Disney is more guilty of the crushing part but then again, it's a preference and I tend to like it.

It’s really not. It’s really, really not.

8 mile is the first universal black crushed film I’ve watched since Psycho, and I honestly hate it even more in motion than I did in screenshots. Which probably has something to do with my monitor being 2.2 instead of 2.4. At least with Psycho, the black and white seemed to mask the crush a little. In 8 mile, so many scenes just have black voids in huge swaths of the image.

Hm well that's not how it looks on my display. What display do you watch it on?

I think the PQ on this disc better than the reviewer on this site gives it credit for. I'm watching it right now and it looks like an excellent new transfer. Very filmic, very nice grain field, very detailed.

Good movie too. I can see why some critics didn't take it seriously, but the writing and the production design are honestly great. This is the first time I've watched since high school and it's just as enjoyable as I remember.

Same feelings here - looked really good to me.
I see they did a recent 2022 remaster for this - and it looked it IMO.
I thought the blacks were a bit on the heavy side and I did wonder if some might comment on that.
But I have no idea how the film is supposed to look, so what do I know.
It just looked fine to me.

Is the 4k Version based on a real 4K Master or just upscaled?

8 Mile is a successful rated R movie. Back in 2002 8 Mile had a budget of $41 million dollars and box office sells of $242.9 million dollars. Rated R for “Strong language, sexuality, some violence and drug use.” 8 Mile was released on the 4K Blu-ray format on 11-8-2022. A total of 82.5GB of space out of 100GB is used on the triple layer BD-100 4K Blu-ray disc. A total of 20.7GB of space out of 25GB is used on the single layer BD-25 2K Blu-ray disc. For some reason my brand-new BD-25 disc had a very long scratch on the optical disc surface. For those families that own 100% 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players, there is no reason to insert the lower quality BD-25 disc since the much better-quality BD-100 4K Blu-ray disc contains the exact same bonus content (all bonus content is 2K quality using the MPEG-4/AVC codec). However, I was disappointed that the bonus content automatically starts playing after the movie is over since I prefer to manually launch the bonus material. Also, I wish the bonus material had a dedicated menu instead of sharing the same screen as the main menu while using bonus material preview windows on the right side of the screen. On my year 2016 OPPO UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player the triple layer BD-100 disc played back perfectly fine even after doing several reverse scans (flawless playback). Because of limitations of my display and A/V receiver, the native 4K Blu-ray disc with lossless 11.1 DTS X was downscaled to 2K (1080P) with 7.1 DTS-HD Master core audio.

The character of B-Rabbit is semi-biographical but mom's spaghetti is non-fiction.
