I've said this before, but one of the frustrating things about RETURNS for me is that it's not really a continuation of I & II.

It's a continuation of some undefined alternate-universe version of I & II, where they were set a couple of decades later, and Lois has a 5-year-old kid by Clark, who was presumably conceived in the Fortress of Solitude while Clark was powerless but apparently still able to pass on his un-redsunned genes. And she's now been in a relationship with someone else long enough to think the other guy was the father.

It's sort of like how Pixar tried to "explain" LIGHTYEAR by specifically describing it as the movie that Andy saw in 1995. It sounds like an easy way to define it, but it literalizes it to the point of making the whole thing seem a little incoherent.

This will be the real unpopular opinion in this thread.

Superman Returns didn't have a sequel because it wasn't a good movie. The movie bombed at the movie theater. I can post multiple articles of this. It had a 270 million dollar budget. It made 200 million at US theaters and theaters take roughtly half. International, it made 191 million and they get roughly 25% of that. It has a low rating of 6.1 on IMDB.

https://www.indiewire.com/2019/07/br...b-1202159433/#!

There are several reasons why this movie didn't do well.

#1 The costume is horrible.
#2 No chemistry with Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth)
#3 Brandon Routh's protrayal of Superman comes off lackluster and boring. Reeves brought humor and charisma that Routh can't match.
#4 Lois Lane has a boyfriend (not Clark Kent) and superman's son has asthma. Not really what Superman fans go to the movies for.
#5 The villian...

Which movie theater did it bomb at?

On a serious note, it likely broke even. And the budget (which was closer to $200m than $270m) includes expenses from Superman Lives along with Nick Cage's 20 million dollar salary, being added to the tally sheet.

It was close to getting a sequel, but Singer kept delaying it as he wanted to make Valkyrie first. Then the writers strike happened, pushing it back even further. The Dark Knight pretty much killed it as it showed WB how much more money they could have made if it had been well received.

Routh's contract for a sequel expired in 2009 and that was the end of it.

At all movie theaters. Box Office is where it bombed. That doesn't even include marketing costs which is usually almost double the budget. Thinking this almost broke even is a pipe dream.

Batman Begins made $373.7m on a $150m budget, so by your logic it also flopped.

The actual production budget was $204m and while "marketing costs are as big as the budget" might be true today, there's no way they spent $200m on marketing back in 2006.

Mid 2000s home media sales were huge, probably the peak for the format, so even if Returns lost money theatrically, I'm sure it turned a profit once you factor those in.

Once it comes out in 2023 all 4 Christopher Reeve Superman films in the Superman 5 film collection I do think the redo 4K UHD of Superman The Movie Theatrical plus both cuts Superman 2 Theatrical and Donner Cut will all look great in 4K UHD Blu-Ray. The question marks ? will be Superman III and IV: The Quest For Peace since those last 2 films where very problematic from a visual effects and color standpoint. Even on the blu-rays their are still shots of Superman's suit that look more teal than blue.

I have decided that if they do a rerelease of the first film I will get it. If not, I will just keep the version I have now and skip the box set.

I've always viewed it as more of a 'tribute' to those first films.

It will be including both cuts. Personally, I prefer the theatrical. Don't really have an interest in watching the Donner cut again. It's not nostalgia - I just didn't think the Donner cut works as well.

It's not really a nitpick or anything since ultimately it's such a minimal thing, but I personally wish they wouldn't do wire removal. I know technology has improved compared to when they shot the two films, but I'd rather it just be presented how it was originally released.

The words "dirt removal" are always concerning at least initially. Hopefully it's very subtle/tastefully done.

I have no issues with small tweaks like wire removal, because the usual dupe process in creating theatrical prints way-back-when would normally render them invisible to begin with. Rescanning original negatives in 4K resolution can reveal all sorts of things that used to be hidden, and just because we can see those things now, doesn't mean we should.
