Thanks for this. I was going to compare the 2 discs yesterday, but was out all day. I was assuming that the Universal had a little extra noise, since it was released early in the format. The VC-1 encode doesn't help. Otherwise, the Uni has a bitrate of 30, while the MC is 15. Yes, MC cheaped-out and put 2 full-lenghth films on a single disc. But yeah, if handled correctly, the MC should still edge out the old disc.

You're welcome. Indeed the VC-1 encoder is ancient for a reason. The main reason I wanted to compare was I saw the review of the Steelbook on this site with an average bitrate of 15 mbps, which concerned me. I now realize how much more efficient the AVC encoder is! As well, the MC has less noise and not at the expense of picture quality. Solid purchase.
