For me:

Alien theatrical
Aliens theatrical
Alien 3 assembly

Theatrical of Aliens is far superior in my opinion.

That's how I felt. Would never have gone if I had known. 5 minutes in and I was ready for it to end. Nowadays it would have leaked and I wouldn't have even gone and wasted my time and money. Give me back my $5.00 !!!

I get excited & sad every time I watch the making of ALIEN 3 on Blu-ray. So many cool ideas, but the producers kept knocking the good ideas:

“Too expensive. Too weird. Great idea, but not what we’re looking for…”
“Can we just redo ALIEN, but call it ALIEN 3?”

I loved William Gibson’s ideas for ALIEN 3. That felt like a proper follow-up to ALIENS. But some might’ve said it’s just a re-heat of ALIENS.

I'd rather watch the documentary on the making of 3 than the movie itself.

That’s what I do.

Taken on its own terms Alien3 is a solid space horror dripping with Fincher’s black-hearted nihilism, but I cannot forgive how they handled the fates of everyone we knew, and in the process crapped on the far superior Aliens.

For me, it’s firmly relegated to hypersleep dream.

Apparently it was Sigourney demanding many of the most egregious changes. When a star goes that insane it’s time to cut them loose. The Alien is easily strong enough to carry a movie without the original characters. Predator 2 didn’t need Arnie and Alien3 didn’t need Sigourney.

Finally watching the Aliens Special Edition for the first time when I got the Quadrilogy DVD set was the first time I questioned the validity of “more equals better.” I didn’t love it and I definitely preferred the theatrical version. I agree with Geoff, it just takes too damn long to get going.

I’m 90% sure a new release will have both cuts just like the last DVD and Blu-ray editions. I know the T2 UHD didn’t but that was due to the remaster being theatrical version for the 3D conversion. He should really revisit that one and fix it after these other films come out.

CBS cut on the current bluray is hitting next chapter twice once it tries to play the early colony scenes. Essy peasy, all the good of the tv cut with all the colorful language intact

Theatrical cut all day. I watched the extended cut for years, having been told that it was the best version, but I always found the film a bit of a slog. On the other hand, I couldn't imagine losing the scenes the extended version added. One day I decided to try the theatrical cut and oh my lord the pacing is worlds better.

Why does everyone hate world-building so much? It's literally the only time we get a glimpse of what "normal" life is like in the future.

re: aliens special edition, the beginning drags its ass way to long for me, but the thing I absolutely hate about the extended Aliens cut and it's what kills my vibe every single time I decide to watch it is that extended "state of the badass art" Hudson scene, it devolves the dropship scene into humor cringe for me and even makes Hudson look like a buffon (full buffon btw), where in the theatrical cut it's perfect in all areas and is just timeless feeling. Editing makes films great! And I agree, the acting in those cut parts is weak, especially in the opening Hadley's Hope scene where I see the guy from the first episode of Red Dwarf "You darn kids!!" or whatever he says it feels like a saturday tv movie.

Back to the Future II lied to me they didn't make Jaws 19.

The only thing I wish they'd kept (from the SE) in the TC was the bit where Ripley discovers her daughter had died. That strengthens her relationship to Newt as a surrogate mother.

Also, I think I must be the only person who actually likes the TC of Alien 3.

This was the problem for me, just such a miserably miserable black-hearted nihilistic grungy (boring) movie I just can't take it. Just a total personality clash for me so I can't even really rate it fairly, but for me, subjectively, it's like maybe the single worst movie ever made (although objectively I'm sure that is far from the case, maybe it is even really good, but it is just personally not for me).

I love Alien, just a classic horror suspense film. I love Aliens, just a classic action horror flick. I actually like Alien: Resurrection a fair bit.
I'd rate them in order of release.

I've never liked the dead daughter subplot in Aliens SE, it's just super phony and screenwritery. Well, my daughter is dead... but it's okay, now I get another one. Newt crying "mommy!" at the end lol, come on, your real parents haven't been gone that long. It's Cameron's sentimentality at its dopiest.
