Spatial resolution isn't everything (and you know that).

Last I heard a lot of movies were still being released on 3D, at least theatrically, if not always on home video. So it hasn't completely faded away, has it? Some boutique distributors are still hard at work restoring old 3D movies from the 50s and the 80s for release on 3D blu-ray.

As for whether or not people would get used to wearing that - I'd say maybe not for the whole day. But certainly for a couple of hours or so in the evening. I understand many gamers already do.

I would not call it "infinitely" better. It's a very subtle change and honestly I doubt most people would notice a difference without a direct comparison. There's also aspects in the deepfake that look worse in my opinion - the lighting on CLU's face is much flatter overall, lacking a lot of the shading in the original. Though of course this is just a YouTube proof-of-concept video, and I would expect an official release by Disney to look better even if they took the same approach of adding a deepfake on top of the existing effects.

I would just like to point out that Disney (well, Lucasfilm/ILM) actually did hire the person that made this video 3 years ago as a "Senior Facial Capture Artist": https://www.engadget.com/lucasfilm-h...054904077.html

So presumably you can see his work in all the Star Wars shows which feature deepfakes of young Luke, etc, after the Mandalorian season 1.

So in 3 years time since he did the original Tron Legacy video and with Disney/ILM's resources I'm sure he would be able to do much better now - if the task was given to him in the first place, of course.

That being said, I don't believe for a second this is happening since all I have read is that someone on reddit said something about it... show me the receipts.

Director Joseph Kosinski has recently revealed (in a Watch-a-Long YouTube podcast with Happy Sad Confused) that he’s recently completed a new 4K Ultra HD remaster of Tron: Legacy (2010). The only bad news is that Disney will not go to putting it on physical media (4K UHD Blu-ray) until there is true demand for it. In other words, pre-order 4K UHDs of The Abyss, Aliens, and True Lies like your life depended on it!!!!!!!!!!

If Apple had their name on 3D movie technology, we'd have conversions of shit like My Dinner With Andre by now

This was literally the first post in the thread.

Also, where do you get the "bad news" from. JK didn't mention that at all.

Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits described the "bad news" simply and succinctly.....

...That’s the good news. The bad news is that—as far as we know—Disney currently has no plans to release it on physical 4K disc. Most likely it’s going to end up on Disney+ instead...

Apologies in advance for throwing more kerosene on the fire but I recall a story at least 5 years ago about somebody attending a screening of this and the CGI face had been updated already but was not planned for any further physical release. I feel like there were a couple of people that saw this screening and verified it, and I really don't think I would have imagined something like that since I'm more attached to the original than Legacy.

I'm sure it'll be on disc eventually. Not worried about "no plans". That's what they said about their D+ shows and look at what happened there.

Already addressed. Reddit rumor. Nothing of substance.

I remember hearing the same thing; I called it bullshit then and I still call it bullshit now.

But....IF they do ever change it then do it properly! I still don't think Hollywood has quite grasped this deageing malarkey because the VFX houses insist on using their own methods - and thus can still charge the studios up the arseh0le - instead of the actual deepfake tech, where a geek with a laptop can still do a betterer job of deageing/face replacement than a fleet of fancy computers backed by a giant render farm. That said, Luke in Book of Boba Fett was unbelievably good, then you get that opening segment of Dial of Destiny where the effect varies from okayish to shite and never truly convinces. Hmmm.

Can we move this to the Wish List section?

There's been no announcement of an actual disc, or even a hint of one.
