Kino UHD BL+FEL DV vs Paramount UHD BL+FEL DV

203 nits

Reminder:
Colors and luminance in tone-mapped HDR screenshots are not representative, only compare compression and detail.

yep, this further proves that the Kino release is better encoded despite the weird hot grading, look at screenshot 13, Paramount's becomes a blocky mess and Kino's for the most part holds decently

and with the mono track being on Kino's release, that makes it overall the superior release

The Kino is horrible. Colours are all wrong.

I'm with you on this, though it is for the audio. I can deal with a slightly off color if it means the original audio track is there. This isn't THEY LIVE where the audio track is present on both discs but one has colors that are off (I'd rather have Studio Canal THEY LIVE despite lesser compression).

Well, it was impossible to get a consensus on this one between the 2 threads and there's no site review. So I just went with the import CE since it seemed to be thought of as closests to the original colors and I like CE's.

Whatever anyone thinks of the Paramount the Kino encode is still their usual set-and-forget mediocrity in itself. (Me, I still think the Paramount is encoded betterer and that's from having compared both in motion.)

The colours on the kino are so wrong I dont know why anyone would prefer it unless you are a colourblind kino fanboy.

OG audio, that's really the only major reason I have their release

I can at least live with the off colors, I just can't stand the remix

It's like people here forget you can somewhat fix colors yourself now with multi-thousand dollar HTDVs and $500+ players.

It's like some people here forget that twiddling a few knobs doesn't often unf*ck something that's as overcooked as the Kino UHD is

Just watched my copy tonight and it looked great. The colors looked perfect to my eyes. Really enjoyed revisiting this gem.

Looking at whether or not to buy this, saw we only get the 5.1 “American dub” so I decided to check out the 2.0 on my KL 4K…”original mono” still has the ‘insurance bonus’ line so amazingly we don’t have a 4K release with the correct lines, never mind the other trickery that’s done to make 5.1 etc. from old movies. Insanity.

Finally watching the Paramount release - nabbed the German one for about £11 in a sale - and the whole thing just seems a bit dark to me?

For example when Charlie gets "caught on the job” in London I’ve always seen it as broad daylight but - despite very blue skies - it looks more like evening light.

Also I normally watch with my ‘OLED Pixel Brightness’ settings on my A2 at 50 or below in a dimly lit room, whereas I’ve got this at max brightness right now comfortably, but that’s a different type of darkness they’re not necessarily related

Of course this is a movie I’ve seen so many times on TV, VHS, then DVD without ever thinking about these things its possible I could be remembering wrong. Once the movie gets to Turin everything looks exactly how I remembered, only way better cause now its in 4K
