and with the mono track being on Kino's release, that makes it overall the superior release |

The Kino is horrible. Colours are all wrong.

Well, it was impossible to get a consensus on this one between the 2 threads and there's no site review. So I just went with the import CE since it seemed to be thought of as closests to the original colors and I like CE's.

Whatever anyone thinks of the Paramount the Kino encode is still their usual set-and-forget mediocrity in itself. (Me, I still think the Paramount is encoded betterer and that's from having compared both in motion.)

Looking at whether or not to buy this, saw we only get the 5.1 “American dub” so I decided to check out the 2.0 on my KL 4K…”original mono” still has the ‘insurance bonus’ line so amazingly we don’t have a 4K release with the correct lines, never mind the other trickery that’s done to make 5.1 etc. from old movies. Insanity.

Finally watching the Paramount release - nabbed the German one for about £11 in a sale - and the whole thing just seems a bit dark to me?
For example when Charlie gets "caught on the job” in London I’ve always seen it as broad daylight but - despite very blue skies - it looks more like evening light. Also I normally watch with my ‘OLED Pixel Brightness’ settings on my A2 at 50 or below in a dimly lit room, whereas I’ve got this at max brightness right now comfortably, but that’s a different type of darkness they’re not necessarily related Of course this is a movie I’ve seen so many times on TV, VHS, then DVD without ever thinking about these things its possible I could be remembering wrong. Once the movie gets to Turin everything looks exactly how I remembered, only way better cause now its in 4K Last edited by JackyJacquard; 07-20-2025 at 10:49 PM. |
