I got this release at B&N and just watched Zombie. Gorgeous transfer.

Yes, about 23 minutes in at the lunch counter, it froze for a couple seconds and then went on playing fine. No other issue. Definitely not a "clean your disc" problem. I played it on a Sony x700. |

No issues on my Panasonic UB-820, but I feel for those who suffer. These random freezing/pixelation issues with 4K discs drive me crazy every time they happen. Nobody seems to know exactly why they keep happening and just blame/advise 'that other possibility you haven't tried yet.'

Bear in mind I have a Sony 4K, which might have been the problem. |

My "tested" replacement UHD came today, and same thing: it reads as a "Data BD" and all files are "corrupted or unsupported."
I give up. I'm thinking it's an authoring issue on their end that some players can overcome and others can't. But, of course, I could be wrong. |

I'm really happy to finally have all 9 of the Val Lewton RKO "horror film" classics on Blu-ray.
I watched these two on the 4K discs, but I think that I would tell most people that the regular Blu-ray is all they need (and that you could fool me as to which is which). I highly recommend "I Walked With A Zombie" as it has long been a favorite of mine. "The Seventh Victim" is my least favorite of the 9 classic films, but others mileage will vary. |

I watched Zombie last week and Victim this evening, the latter being a personal favourite.
I couldn’t be more happy. Very film-like, astonishingly detailed in a few shots, generally good, a few shots very soft indeed. The soundtrack is solid. I felt Victim was a better transfer than Zombie. Congratulations all round to all involved. For a long while I thought it’d never see a Blu-ray Disc release. But UHD? I’m not sure it bought too much more to the party (I haven’t compared discs), but I’m satisfied that this is the best it could possibly be. |

I think both look absolutely stunning in 4K, even without HDR. The grain looks perfect and it just has this lush look.

Agreed. I never dreamed these movies could look this good. This is definitely my favorite release this year. I'm happy with all the other blu-rays of the other titles, but if Criterion somehow got them all and gave them this kind of treatment, I'd be over the moon.

Yes, the shots which didn't look as good were just down to the source material.
They were shot on a shoestring, and on a limited schedule, and no doubt simply couldn’t afford to go back and reshoot anything out of focus, etc. I’m quite ‘invested’ in this release. The Seventh Victim was one of the last films on my Blu-ray Disc upgrade list, so quite a surprise when I found being able jump straight from DVD to UHD. I couldn’t be happier. I have both a SONY x700 and a Panasonic UB820. The Sony X700 is notorious for freezing during layer changes. It's a nice little workhorse, but it will completely choke on the occasional disc. I discovered the problem when Die Hard came out on 4K. One copy after another would freeze at the same spot when played on my x700. This is after playing with a multitude of settings and upgrading firmware. My x700 is a region-free player, so I assumed it must be the region hack. It's all down to how the x700 reacts to certain discs. I broke down and bought a Region-A Panasonic UB820, and viola, the same disc that continually froze on the x700, played flawlessly. And maybe it's pure placebo, but the discs look better on the Panasonic player (I have a Sony TV). The same disc played without incident on my friend's Sony x800 M2. So, I assume it's limited to just particular models. I know all players have issues, but while I do get the occasional freeze with my x700, my Panny UB820 has been flawless for the last 3 years. It looks like there's a sale on Val Lewton Blu's on Amazon, so I will complete the collection. |
