This is just what we need, a more capable switch. Do not understand the criticism for playing it safe.

If it strayed too far and didn’t play switch one games people would be furious.

I think it’s because Nintendo always wanted to be seen as pioneers and reinventing the wheel, but have now rested on their laurels.

See, I dont like that expression in this case, because its always seen as a pejorative. I think the vast majority of Nintendo fans are actually relieved that Switch 2 is an iteration, as opposed to being something completely new. Besides, I'm not sure what more can be done outside of VR or augmented reality, and those would probably be seen by the masses as gimmicky. I think Nintendo is in a good place, in terms of finding their lane and sticking with it. They just need to continue to refine and improve on this business model and lord knows there's PLENTY to improve upon to make Switch 2 a worthy upgrade!

If this rumor is true, it's a good starting point!

The SNES, N64, Gamecube didn’t exactly reinvent then wheel

the Wii U were Nintendo at their most “unique” self and these were the dark years imo, their worst console hands down

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cracking system, it’s just not much of an upgrade, more like a Switch pro. Not even a OLED screen on the handheld.

We’re getting much more modern architecture, a 7-9x jump in CPU and GPU, triple the RAM, 8x or more internal storage speed increase and DLSS. This is absolutely a generational leap and far beyond what a Pro system upgrade offers.

This is the most significant improvement IMO. I think triple the RAM will make a huge improvement in performance. Not to mention that it is using LDPPR5 RAM, which is significantly faster than the LDDPR4 RAM in the og Switch.

This is a pretty good breakdown of the graphical capabilities, based on an analysis of the Mario Kart footage...

It still amazes me that folks are aggressively reacting to leaked specs and a couple seconds of a maybe new game. New Super Mario Kart(tm) has to be cross gen and we've yet to see any benefits of the new hardware. That's what April is for. It'll be impressive if you keep your expectations in check as to it's dual nature.

The mistake too many people make is comparing this to the PS5 or XSX or high end PC's. This is an entirely different business model. And yes, we all know there are going to be much more powerful handhelds on the market. But how much wiil/do those cost? Nintendo has to be able to release Switch 2 at a mass market price. They can't be the Rog Ally or Lenovo Legion Go and release a 700-800.00 handheld.

I'm at the point where I'd 100% be happy having the Switch 2 just run its games at a consistent framerate at least 1080p. For all the hulabaloo over PS5/Series X and all the power, we've gotten pretty much nothing out of those systems. Games are taking longer to develop, the investment into visual quality has stifled gameplay design, and its just not really been that exciting or inspiring of a time in the industry. Nintendo's games might run on older hardware and not really visually compare to like, a Last of Us 2 or something, but they're so much more fun and creative. As long as Nintendo continues to deliver exceptional games like Tears of the Kingdom, but now have them running consistently and in a better resolution... I'm fine with the switch 2 not being a beast of a machine comparable to a ps5.

Not too sure, the lack of the larger bezel on the original Switch is better, which is why the Switch 2 model looks better as it's only got the bezel on the sides. The OLED looks better in the vivid mode, but for me this is just too much, so I simply put it on the normal mode.

Without a doubt, the original Switch was dated hardware at launch with the Tegra X1 chip. But just look what Nintendo managed to get out of it. If the new Switch has anywhere near PS4 Pro performance with DLSS, then what Nintendo's in house development teams are going to able to deliver boggles the mind.

Fair play, I don’t mind waiting. I didn’t start playing my switch again until last year after it gathered dust for a few years. Too busy with VR and then PS5, but glad I did, because Mario Wonder and Portal 1 and 2 were fantastic.

Does seem like they went out of their way to redesign the docking connections of the joy cons and for the console to dock with the base. Was the old design bad or something? Will people who virtually never take their switch out of the dock notice a difference? Or is this just a pointless change to make it impossible to mix and match old and new hardware?

I didn't notice the docking area being significantly different. I know they focused on the improved cooling vents on the bottom but that was it. They also showed both the USB C and guide notches that are already on the current system.

They changed the dock for Switch a few years ago due to concerns about scratching the screen so I'm sure new changes are just to ensure Switch 2 docks smoothly. As far as the Joy Cons, they are bigger to match the larger size of the display so they wouldn't mix and match anyway.

I don't play Switch undocked very often because I think it feels flimsy and the performance is better while docked. Even if the new changes improve the feel, Switch 2 will probably stay docked for the improved performance.

I didn't realize that until I played Bowser's Fury. It runs at 60fps while docked, but only 30fps in handheld mode. I wonder what exactly is inside the dock to add horsepower. I always thought it was strictly for image transfer from the Switch screen to the TV and all the processing was internal to the handheld.

It is, there’s nothing fancy in the dock. They just don’t have to worry about battery life and (as much) about thermals when docked.

As Diesel said the dock doesn't do anything. The console just runs flat out when docked and it's downclocked when handheld.

Crazy, but Nintendo's average yearly salary only works around to around $62k/year. The top executives at Nintendo only make around $1-2.5 million/year, with Miyamoto himself never making >$2 million a year, which is peanuts compared to typical executives among similarly sized American companies. Though this isn't unique to Nintendo. Seems to be more of a cultural thing in Japan, where even executives feel this thing called shame when it comes to making too much money.

I'm a fairly low level manager for a large financial institution and make nearly double the average Nintendo salary. I can't imagine coming close to supporting my current finances on barely $60k a year with inflation and all.

https://automaton-media.com/en/news/...ional-ranking/

Quote:
With an average annual salary of 9.627 million yen (which is around $62,000 based on recent conversion rates), Nintendo came in second, with only semiconductor manufacturer Screen Holdings ahead of them. Nintendo was the only video game/entertainment company to make it into the top five ranking.
