I'm glad I paid a bit more for the UK edition.

Hadn't seen the film in 20+ years, but on rewatching it, the white-out towards the end is important, wouldn't have wanted to see the film again without it.

To be fair also some people don’t know that stuff about the colour? Even though it affects them.

You know, not every commentary can be pitched at someone who comprehends film like Martin Scorsese.

I’ve only watched a couple of commentaries and they’re on big releases from the actual filmmakers, so I can’t specifically comment on the boutique ones. But I will say that having tried a view video essays, the speaker's actual voice can make as much of a difference as the content. In this Eureka set:

The guy was pointing out some stuff I hadn’t noticed, but his voice made everything sound so dull to me I had to turn it off.

I haven't seen the UK version, but the Criterion version was underwhelming.

Howard Stern was obsessed with this scene and played it all of the time on the radio during his first divorce.

I've finally watched this film tonight and thought it was excellent. The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is exquisite and the performances from the four leads are terrific, with Nicholson's being one of his best in a career with dozens of great roles. This is a film with a lot of shadowplay and I should mention that the encoding looks superlative, because it's in dark areas that I personally tend to notice compression artifacts and of course, I spotted none here. The LPCM Mono audio is clean and clear for this mostly dialogue-driven film, but the few instances of music sound just fine, too.

I also watched Munro (1961), which is in 4K SDR (as I believe Indicator pointed out here) with LPCM Mono and English SDH subtitles. It's a cute little animated short (8:56) with a beautiful 4K master and has opening and closing Paramount logos. The Reitman / Nichols talk (36:01 and in encoded here in HEVC 1080p60) which is also on the Criterion, is great for hearing from Nichols and the Ayoade appreciation piece (13:06) is also very well thought out. The theatrical trailer (2:36) and teaser (0:54) must have been recently remastered and are presented in 1080p, and along with the two radio spots (1:31) all have LPCM Mono audio.

The image gallery is in 1080p with 95 images, including many behind-the-scenes photos (in both black and white and color), scans of an Embassy Pictures production notes leaflet and several international posters (the German one is startling and hilarious, while I think the UK quad is probably the most effective and the plain Embassy one is the most intriguing). The UK press pack gallery has an explanatory card and 27 images, including scans of the pressbook from the screening and of an invitation to a "luncheon in honour of Miss Ann-Margaret" immediately following.

I did not get to the two medium-length audio interviews with screenwriter Jules Feiffer (52:12 and 46:14) or the audio commentary, which along with the booklet, will have to wait for another time. But this is a really great disc of a great film and if the fixed fade wasn't enough already, it has almost no overlapping extras compared to the Criterion—it seems even the trailer and radio spot(s) might be different.

I don't know where Criterion got their radio spot from, but the two spots that are on this release came from the record I happily gave them to use knowing they would want to make their release as great as possible which they did. Seeing my spinning 45rpm record was a real treat and they also cleaned up the audio on it.

It's lovely that the graphic was your record. Thanks for providing the spots.
