Carrey played the part of the manic Riddler to a T. The wacky pink hair was unfortunate, but his performance was spot on for what it was.

I think most are expecting the more dapper and serious take on the Riddler if he is to appear in the Nolan films. Depp could be excellent in that.

edit: even though all casting rumors are bogus and made up by speculators or media, Depp did respond saying he'd be interested in playing the part. Then again, so did a number of other people, so whatever. Wait a couple years and we'll have something more definitive.

Did you see Vader without his helmet in ROTJ?

Definitely a double bagger.

But I always figured Batman liked his men younger(Robin).

Nolan isn't going to pick someone that you would be expecting. Sure everyone thinks Depp would be a good choice, but it's too easy. When it was announced Heath Ledger would be playing joker, nobody thought he could pull it off. It's going to be another one of those selections where people will question the decision.

Personally, I love Nolan's earlier work (Following, Memento) and wish he'd focus more on that, but of course he can always make more $$$ with the blockbuster Batman movies...

commercial blockbuster v. great film , often mutually exclusive

Actually I think Carrey would be a good casting in this is well. I think he has the acting chops to do both versions of the Riddler. He was the outrageous campy riddler in Forever because the movies was outrageous and campy. I think he could also do it in a more serious dark psychotic way as well. Carrey while not the greatest actor ever is a lot more diverse of an actor than people give him credit for.

I personally feel that Nolan has yet to have a "miss" in his resume. I'm a pretty harsh grader and this is how I would rate his films, in chronological order:

1. Following (1998) - 8/10
2. Memento (2000) - 10/10
3. Insomnia (2002) - 7/10
4. Batman Begins (2005) - 8/10
5. The Prestige (2006) - 9/10
6. The Dark Knight (2008) - 8/10

We will see how Inception turns out next year. It could be a stinker, but so far it sounds interesting.

Yeah, Dane Cook told MTV he'd love to play the Riddler: "I love the new Dark Knight series and 'Batman Begins,'" Cook told MTV News when asked if there were any comic book movie characters he has his eye on. "If they brought back The Riddler—a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker—that would be bad-ass. I would do that."

I would boycott the movie if they ever hired Dane Cook (which they would never consider).

the riddler cant be the only dude that might star in the 3rd movie.
nolan might decide to include cat woman or even poison ivy. who would play those 2?

Following is very good, but it's not better than his "mainstream" Batman movies. Those three movies are on a similar level in my opinion. Memento is hands down his best movie. But as a Batman fan I'm happy that he has been involved in the franchise, if for no other reason than quality control. After Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, the studio needed a director with a darker vision who could get great performances from his actors. Add in Pfister's excellent cinematography and you've got a pretty damn good "blockbuster" product compared to the other 99% of mainstream trash that's being released every year. I will be happy when Nolan is done with Batman and moves onto different projects. I am interested in Inception. It has a massive budget, but Nolan wrote it from his own mind so it might not be as mainstream as the budget would indicate.

Depends on which Vader you're talking about. It could be the one at the end of Episode III.

I didn't really question his ability to act the part. The guy was a good actor, and was known as a good actor prior to his appearance in The Dark Knight. What worried me was the initial art I was seeing of the Joker. I liked the concept of the Glasgow Grin when I first read about it, but seeing it in that picture made me REALLY question it. It works better in the film, but I was worried about it for a minute there.

I agree that he probably could act the part, but I don't think anyone would give him a chance due to preconceived notions. It's a little different for Heath Ledger to break the preconceived notions of "that guy from Brokeback Mountain" than it would be for Carrey to break the notions of him being "that guy from Ace Ventura". Or The Mask. Or Liar Liar. Or Bruce Almighty. Or In Living Color.

I saw Dane Cook in Mr. Brooks. Played surprisingly well. I wouldn't personally cast him for the Riddler, but I think he catches more crap than he deserves. The comedies he does are far from grade A, but I still find them as passable comedies. They're not the cream of the crop, but they're at least watchable.

I actually feel his performance in Batman Forever would be harder to shake than his involvement in the other movies and TV show you mentioned. I would imagine most people would think, "OK, this guy played a campy version of this character but we're just going to accept him playing a darker version of it years later?" It would be awkward to say the least. I actually think Carrey can pull off the darker Riddler for sure, it's just that most of the audience would never give it a chance. Nolan knows this.

Chirs Nolan is the one director writer who has never been a miss .... some of his films arent as good as others ill admit but i like everything he has made .... he just doesnt have too many movies under his belt and hes bound to get a miss sooner or later, man is only human :P

Batman Begins - The Dark Knight - Memento - Prestige

thought i've never seen Insomnia - The Following - Doodlebug

anyone seen those 3? .. recommend any?

Insomnia is his weakest film. It's a remake of a 1997 Norwegian film. The interesting thing is that it's his weakest film and it's also the only film that he didn't have a hand in writing the script. If he did, I think it probably would have turned out better than it did. But even so, it is still a good film and it was a stepping stone for him to Batman Begins within the Warner Brothers studio.

Following is a very good film. I'd put it on a similar level to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. It is a film noir with a really screwed up timeline (kinda like Memento). It's a short film, only around 70 minutes. It was shot for just $6,000 in Black & White with his friends being the actors. The only recognizable name in the film is John Nolan, who participated as a favor to his nephew Chris. He also played "Fredericks" in Batman Begins (Wayne Enterprises board member who tells Bruce that the apple has fallen very far from the tree). When you consider the budget, it's not just a very good film but a great one given what he had to work with. Doodlebug is a short film that you can watch here:

http://www.veoh.com/collection/s2527...03741mWqANpkp#

You will notice that it features Nolan's trademark grittiness. Pretty interesting little short film in my opinion.

The Dark Knight was its own monster, and a third movie in this franchise would not be a bad idea.

Being that they made buttloads of money off both BB and TDK, I doubt Warner is gonna say "yeah, Heath is dead so we can't make anymore batman movies". Yeah, right.

It'll happen.

The question is when, and can nolan pull another masterpiece out of his ass? I know he's a good director, but I also know he can be hit or miss. He's been "hit" on both Batman movies as far as I'm concerned, but there's always a potential for a screw-up, or that things just won't work out as well. I think regardless of what happens that the way people have deified Ledger's work in TDK, and regardless of how good the third film will be, it will probably not be as good or better, and so it probably will not be a huge hit. There's still a chance it could be good, though, so I'm still looking forward to it.

....but.....Depp as the Riddler?

I can see it, I just kind of don't want to. Jim Carrey was bad enough. I know some people loved his performance as The Riddler, but I really wasn't that impressed. I dunno, he could really surprise, but I'd rather see someone much more dark. I know it's the Riddler, but wouldn't it be cool to see a much darker version of him? After all, these "Nolan" Batman films are all about realism, right?
Casey Aflek as the Riddler. He can do creepy very well.
