Larger team sizes have never been an asset to truly strategic and tactical game play. This is why even in games that support 16-32 players.... you will frequently see the competitive ladders limit team sizes to four player teams.

Communications are going to be a huge hurdle to overcome. Obviously you can't have 128 players having free flowing voice chat with each other. That would be an unbearable mess. Perhaps they will have voice chat for smaller squad groups and then some fixed text signals for the rest of the team, but even trying to follow texts thrown out by 128 players would be impossible.

Like I said.... I'll definitely give it a run through if a demo is offered. I'd love to see how they attempt to tackle the issues that will be caused by having so many players. It just seems that so many people are so gung ho for this game simply because of the fact that it will allow so many players, but in my experience..... more is definitely not better when it comes to tactical game play.
Yet, the military pull off tactical war games (real life simulations) with MANY MORE than 256 people. There is ALWAYS a way. AND, what works for most still might not work for you as an individual.

Remember, these same people were thinking there was no way to have 60 people on one map without total chaos. Then, came R2 with "Skirmish". That's what breaking new ground is all about.

Not sure how you get these to appear but looks like we've got another faction:

They only appear once, and you have to have your mouse cursor over the above places. Click on them until the badge appears, then keep clicking until you get the flash screen shots.

You can refresh the page to reload it, otherwise you won't see them again.

Some news

Quote:
We looked at the number of different camera options for the game, and settled on FPS primarily because of the scale of MAG," Bodewin remarks. "Some of our previous games were third-person, and it was well suited to [managing] teammates and AI quadrates as well. But for a game of this size we really wanted to make it the most immersive and the most intense large-scale game that we could. There's really no better way to do that than to sink you right into the action and look at things through a first-person perspective."
Quote:
-2 to 256 Players
-Dedicated servers with new network architectures to help reduce lag
-Streamline matches to reduce need to wait.
-All audio cues (planes flying by, air raid sirens) are actual players causing it or player triggered actions. This can happen in other regions and you can hear in distance.
-PunkBuster quality cheating detection. System tests for things like rate of fire/movement/damage to keep things in check
-First Person view (better sense of scale and immersion into game)
-20 years in future, 3 major PMCs bid for war. The power struggle of these 3 dubbed Shadow War
3 Factions, only 2 announced now: Raven(high tech weapons, most trained soldiers on planet. Will appeal to Halo/Resistances fans). Sver(fierce fighters from middle east/central Asia area. Battle harden warriors)
-256 Domination mode. Attackers and defenders. Out layer of defense and inner layer. Once gone through the out layer 'hell breaks loose'. Anti-aircraft and radar are vulnerable. If your faction wins alot it gets the contract for that game mode and gets XP bonuses and perks.
-3 other game modes: Acquisition(128 player escort-style mode. Steal 2 prototype armored transports and bring to extraction zone). Sabotage(64player, control 2 points for X time then a demolition objective is revealed which must be destroyed). Suppression(64 player team deathmatch)
-Customize face, voice, armor.
-No soldier class system, but has a free-form kit creation. Can save 3 different load-outs. Depending on your choice of weapons, it can be told by looking at you so others can tell. Change your load-out to match how the battle is going.
-Snipers can get more than normal XP for killing people in designated areas of importance
-Ranking up gives access to new weapons/perks/leadership positions.
-Recognizes issues with large scale maps and the traveling.

-8 player into a squad, 4 squads into a platoon, 4 platoons into a company (US Military)
-Certain goals for each squad/platoon etc. Have 2ndary goals like blowing bridges.
-Veteran ranks can enlist into leadership roles, give orders to squad, then platoon, then the company(OIC)
-Officer only communication channel to help organize the battle

-Want to be approachable to casual yet have alot of features for the hardcore.
-Been running 256 player tests since Nov. 08 and plans to have closed/open betas.

Domination sounds like it could be a real winner.

Glad they went with FP perspective.

I haven't seen much about controllable vehicles: land, sea or air.

The only two machines in the released screens that don't just look like scenery are these:

Yes the forklift.

Ok. Technically speaking, it's looking good so far, and if they can deliver on the 256 smooth multiplayer, it's going to be great for a ton of people.

But am I the only one that wishes that Sony would get a high profile high Sci Fi (Space opera / Aliens / Monsters) type exclusive TPS or FTS on with really varied settings, great storyline and exotic ennemies?
So far I know of one series, that doesn't even really fit the bill that well ... Resistance and its sequel, and frankly it just isn't really "high sci fi", WWII locales and all. More like "alternative past", with yet another ton of "realistic" urban settings and forests.

I mean ... how many time must we have the urban type shooters with grey/ brown palletes before they realize that some people are hungry for high level Sci fi Alien shooting TPS/ FPS?

Quantum theory is coming, aye, and it won't arrive one second too late, but the quality of that title is still to be seen.

So far we have, regardless of the quality of the titles (my point here is about story, setting and locales, and exotic ennemies):

- Haze: immediate future, humans fighting humans in industrial complexes and the jungle
- MGS4: immediate future, humans fighting humans in industrial complexes, urban settings and the jungle
- SOCOM: Present, humans fighting humans in industrial complexes and urban settings
- Resistance: Alternate past, humans fighting aliens and infected humans in WWII urban settings
- Resistance 2: Alternate Past, humans fighting Aliens and infected humans in WWII urban settings and forest
- Killzone 2: Not so distant future, humans fighting humans (slightly mutated) in urban settings and industrial complexes

And to come (apparently):
MAG: Future/ not so distant future, humans fighting humans, in urban settings, industrial complexes and forests

The PS3 needed to build itself a good library of shooters, there is no doubt about it, and it did imo. But frankly, I just played Killzone 2 this past week and once we put aside the technical marvels, I am just sick to death of the industiral / urban/ grey/ brown settings.
I know there might be a slight change later on with plains or forests, but I gave up toward the end of chapter 2, as after FEAR a few yers back on PC, I have had my dose of shooters in repetitive grey/ brown settings.

Far from me to remove the title of awesome FPS to Killzone2, everything felt great, the ennemy and ally AI is excellent and probably better than FEAR's (which has been one of the best I have met), and the Graphics/ FX and gameplay are ultra- solid.
I just wish for more variety.

Also (and I am no MS fan), look at two of the best selling TPS/ FPS of the past 10 years:
Halo and Gears. you'd think that hiring a great writter and setting something in what I like to call a High Sci Fi setting would be a No Brainer

In the end, I just hoped that MAGs would have been more like StarShip Troopers, and a little less like Platoon, that is all.

/rant over.

P.S: they also need a new name for MAG

For me, Killzone 2 definitely upped the ante a bit.

This title has some serious potential.

I'd love to be in a 256-battle smash-fest.

OMG, it was like 157 on 1. Of course I got pwned.

Grenade anyone?

MAG: The Massive Interview (part 1)

Quote:
Will MAG be played in first person or third person? What do you feel are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

MAG is a first person shooter. In looking at both styles of gameplay we felt that first person, which is the most effective camera to immerse players directly into the action, made the most sense. Third person perspective is great when you want to focus on the character, his look, his animations, and his style. It's also great when dealing with AI team-mates due to the pulled back perspective of the battlefield. However, for MAG, it's all about you, your weapon, and the 255 players around you. There's no better way to experience the full scale battle of the MAG than from directly behind your weapon's iron sights.
