If you guys like Neil Marshall as a Director, should try Shane Meadows on for size; very similar style of filming, brutal and grim protrayed in beauty.

Check out:

Dead Man's Shoes
Twenty Four Seven
This is England
Once Upon a Time in the Midlands

Not everyone's cup of tea, but in my opinion excellent viewing!

Default Dog Soldiers PQ - Not that bad...

Ok so I finally got around to watching "Dog Soldiers" on BD. I've never seen it on DVD, but from all the comments I heard, I expected the worst BD experience.

Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. The PQ wasn't terrible at all and for a film with such a low budget, it looked great. Sure, grain popped up here and there and some parts looked a tad muddy, but overall, it wasn't an eye-sore to watch at all. The SQ also delivered on my TV as well.

Overall, I think it looked and sounded quite fine. Better than "28 Days Later"'s PQ (which I love and Danny Boyle made it look that way).

So what's everyone complaining about?

It wasnt as bad quality as everyone thinks. I sometimes get the impression that people on this board expect perfection from every BD title that comes out.

OMG, heaven forbid the blacks arent black enough. With some titles, take what you can get.

No ones mentioned one of the best/fight scenes, or fight for your live scenes ever from this movie. I'll give you a hint, it involves a frying pan.

This is a great movie; there is some priceless dialogue-involving a certain tatoo incident. It's a good werewolf movie, unique and a different angle-military and all.

Would this be a good purchase if I don't have it on DVD? Yes, I realize the PQ is crap, but whatever. I hear that the movie is pretty badass nonetheless.

I'd say definitely. Saw it at FYE for $7 for a while now.

The movie is awesome! And looking at your avatar I consider it a must-own for you! The blu-ray would obviously be the better choice so go for it!

Hahaha, I'm actually not a big horror fan. I do love American Werewolf, especially that picture I'm using, but I only like to own good horror films, that are worthwhile and not pointless and awful, or just cheap. I remember seeing Dog Soldiers for cheap at FYE, I don't remember how cheap though.

Great film that deserved a much better transfer, but at $5 it's a steal!

So is there any reason to get the Blu-ray over the DVD? Because the DVD looks a lot better: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ss=0#vergleich

That's your opinion, I think the BD shots look slightly better but not by much. I have the R2 dvd with all kinds of fun bonus features so I never bothered to upgrade. I checked the BD out from the library and was underwhelmed so I just kept the dvd. In this case the features are better than the 2% bump in picture quality, at least IMO.

Why do the Blu-ray shots look better to you? To me it's a lot sharper - I know sharper isn't always better but in this case I think it is.

Sharper and clearer. The difference is small, but just the way the logo looks on his patch on the first shot there. The DVD looks slightly pixalated, the BD looks clear and clean. There is just a slight jaggedness to edges of lines on the dvd shots that is not there on the BD ones. They are also slightly less noisy. Guess that could be grain, but it looks more like video noise to me.
Like I said, very close by those screens and I won't sacrifice the extras for a slightly better picture.
