Default Sears Solid State?

Hey guys I had a quick question for you record player junkies. I've been wanting to get into vinyl for a while, and I just had one picked out on Amazon. Well tonight I was cleaning out my garage, and realized that the old stereo that old owner of the house left has a record player. Now I played the radio on this thing, but never really dawned on me it had a record player. Was playing Green Day's first album on it and it sounds good. But...

It's a Sears Solid State, I don't know anything about this player, and I couldn't find any info on it plus I can't find a model number.

So it's a Sears Solid State, it has an 8 track player along with the turn table and AM/FM radio. Was wondering where I can find info on this player, and I was curious if anyone knows when these stereos were produced. And if it will be possible to find parts for this like cartidges. I know my questions are pretty useless without a model number, but I was hoping someone would know something about these players. Thanks.

8-tracks went out in the mid 1970s, so that's a good approximation of this unit's age. As for more specifics, sorry , I can't help.

Is it one of these? Maybe you can find some 8-track tapes at a flea market.

Yes! Well it looks very similar to that. I was just wondering, should I just get a new player because not sure if they still make cartridges for this player if it was from 70's. I dont want it to be a pain in ass trying to get things for it. But I did go buy some vinyls today and it is working.

Getting a new TT would probably be your best bet, from a SQ point of view. You can get one from a few hundred, but don't forget you might need a phono stage too.

In addition, as Rich has suggested a better tonearm and cartridge will also be easier on your vinyl recordings. Not only should they sound better, but the vinyl should last longer and be better cared for.

Personally , i would look for a good used table whether direct drive or belt .

I think you would get more bang for your buck .

I know this site is Canadian but im sure there are deals in your area to be found .

Good points! The latter is especially important as one's vinyl investment increases.

If you budget will stretch to it, check out the Rega RP1. Rega have a deservedly great rep when it comes to turntables, and my brief experience with the RP1 suggests that it's well worth a listen.

Awesome, thanks for the suggestion. I found a white one on eBay for $445. Looks pretty nice. And this will hook into my Pioneer receiver right?

Does your Receiver have phono inputs?

As far as I can tell your Pioneer does NOT have a phono input, which means you'll need to purchase a seperate phono preamp. And what negative reviews of the Rega are you talking about? Can you provide a link? Pro-ject also makes a very nice TT. What model did you look at?

I was just looking at a couple reviews on amazon. And I was looking at the Debut III. So many colors to choose from, it's a tough choice. And good phono pre amps you know of? And I'm taking it that the pre amp connects to the receiver?

I will let others recommend a good but rather inexpensive preamp. But, the tonearm L & R channel cables plug into the Phono Preamp and the Phono Preamp by way of interconnects (usually RCA) will then plug in generally an auxiliary (aux) input of your receiver or preamp.

Yes, the output of the phono stage connects to an input on your receiver.

As for a phono stage, my current affordable fave is the Cambridge Audio Azur 640P. Check out the review in the latest (#7) issue of the mag.

Can't believe this one escaped our notice when it was rigth in front of us. Apparently TDK Japan sold its recordable media business to a company call Imation. They're located in the USA and apparently started as a spin off of the old 3M brand. Somehow they started making an interesting looking belt drive entry level TT and released it under the TDK brand:

Should be added to the list I think.

Nice find Fred! Real nice that it offers automatic speed control as well. May have to go and seek out a dealer.

Added of course!
