Yeah let's forget about how many more great things he's done than bad things. His whole filmography is Dreamcatcher

You're right, I should have mentioned Mumford and Wyatt Earp.

Point is, Abrams has a much better track record.

Did I ever say otherwise? I wouldn't want Kasden directing... his talents lie in writing mostly (The Big Chill work though).

I think both of them together will do much better than either would by themselves, but for me Kasden is more essential to the SW universe

As a director, probably true.

As a writer, no way.

Lucky us, then, that Kasdan is a writer on this thing.

George Lucas' well thought-out "pattern making" does not make the prequel films good or bad. The problem with the prequels is:

1. Poor acting/actors had no chemistry with each other
2. Awful dialogue
3. Dated CGI
4. CGI effects that dont merge well with real characters
5. Anakin's journey from good to evil was NOT well put together

Now if we are talking patterns, all of the negatives listed above are just the opposite in the Original Trilogy:
1. Good acting/actors had chemistry with each other
2. Memorable lines of dialogue
3. special effects still look awesome
4. special effects merge well with real characters
5. Darth Vader's journey from evil to good was well put together (AND was created in just a couple scenes with Luke and Vader)

But as poorly made as the prequels were, I have no problem with people loving them, especially younger generations.

This. Yes, the prequels have a lot of problems as you stated, but people can't say "oh, they don't exist" or "oh, no one should like these movies.

My younger brother, who I introduced to Star Wars, is eight years old and likes the prequels. I always say, the more people who like Star Wars, the better.

There's a lot of talk there's ties to the prequels, but it wouldn't make sense to have a ton when you think about the fact that this a sequel thirty years after Return of the Jedi. It'c clear in general that this new canon owes a lot to the prequels, with Rebels, Tarkin, and Lords of the Sith playing a huge part and they all have ties to the prequels. They're never going to just be ignored, and even Abrams really can't at the end. You'd alienate a whole section of fans who grew up on those movies, which wouldn't be right. It comes down to taking the good from the bad, and making it all work as best as possible to please fans on both sides.

He's also making a film set 50-60 years after the Prequel Trilogy. Would it make sense for a story dealing with the current War on Terror to constantly reference the Second World War?

If the Original Trilogy barely references the prequels (obi wan briefly talks about the past to Luke), why the heck would Force Awakens reference the prequels??? If anything, the new movie may briefly talk about things that happen in the OT. There is nothing important to reference in the prequels anyway. It's like talking about Hitler and reminding people that he was an artist when he was younger. Interesting yes but it's not talked about when people are going to talk about Hitler and WW2 (aka Darth Vader).

Prequels should certainly not be mentioned if the point is only to tie up some loose ends like what's up with Darth Plaguis or what happened to jar Jar binks or what Boba Fett did in his teenage years.

Like I said, it'll probably be minimal, if the rumors are true. But again, it's thirty years after Return of the Jedi, which is almost sixty years after the prequels, so making a lot of mentions back to it would be really silly if it's not done correctly. But the prequels are never going to be ignored completely, no matter how many people hope they will be. They'll always play a big part in this universe.

yeah I agree, but I cant imagine that there would be more than two lines of dialogue referencing the prequels in The Force Awakens. Im hoping we at least get two lines of dialogue referencing the OT! But good filmmakers have no need to reference/remind us of the past. I dont want to see a scene in this movie where Luke is talking to Leah saying, "remember about the time when dad told me to tell you that you were right, well, you are right again" or Luke saying, "my back got messed up and slipped a disc back during the battle of the Death Star when I was dragging dad to safety. Damn he was was heavy and hard to pull!"

I think the teaser and first trailer have already demonstrated plenty of connections to the OT will be present.

I was mainly referring to characters talking about the past (the prequels and the OT, or even the cartoon series). Characters from the OT or a crashed Destroyer, Tie Fighters, Stormtroopers doesnt necessarily mean that characters are going to even talk about what happened during Return of the Jedi and before. If anything, I think conversations will be focused about what happened between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens. To a point that there could be another movie trilogy made between the events of Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens.

Actually, everything about the past just might be explained in the opening text crawl of Force Awakens. The OT characters may not even mention one thing about the events of the Original Trilogy.

You can never recapture that same level of magic. At least it will hopefully be light years away from the PT and if nothing else give us a "small" feel of what it was like so long ago. I think everyone should just enjoy what comes out, it will be much better than the prequels and will never live up to the originals. Just accept it for what it is, as there is no reason to be nervous but setting yourself up to equal May 25th 1977 and May 21st 1980 would be your own fault.
Oh I'm not expecting it to top the original trilogy. It is already better than the prequels the moment it was announced. It's a sequel to the original trilogy, you get the original characters, the settings, designs, you got the whole galaxy ready on the table. And how they have learned a lot from the mistakes of the prequels. You will love the movie the first time you see it no matter what. That's nostalgia working. But if there's nothing new brought to the table, visually the same, new planets with old environments, new but actually recycled characters, no daring moments to the story - you will start to find it uninteresting the next time around. You'll realize that they're playing it safe.

I'm not already bashing the movie, I emphasize strongly on if. I've read and seen every single thing available online, one by one is getting officially confirmed. Maybe I shouldn't do that, but Star Wars has been in my life since I can remember and I'm almost 40 years old. I can't help but feeling nervous, but like I said I really hope I'll be surprised, that we'll get something new and memorable.
