Cool - I'll look into that.

As for my 250 gig - I took it out of the PS3 - put the original 60 gig back in, and put the 250 gig into an enclosure. I've hooked it up to my computer, but it doesn't seem to be showing up.

When I hook it up to my new PS3 (when I get it this week), if I hook it up as an external, it should see all the data (music, video, game saves) - and then I can just copy it over - sound correct?

The 250gb will be wiped when put into ANY other PS3... There is no way to get your data back unless you get the SAME PS3 back.

Ive read you can take your old hard drive from a dead ps3, pop it into a sata->usb device, and plug it into your new ps3, then use that to restore your old info to the new ps3. If worse comes to worse, you at least can try that.

That was my plan. I have the old 250 gig in an enclose - so it's basically read to go as an external - but I've plugged it into my computer and it doesn't show up.

Any reason it wouldn't show up on my computer? Hopefully, it shows up when I plug it into my new PS3 (which I'll be getting later this week - I'm waiting for the release of the 250 gig slim).

HA HA, just did the youtube do it yourself YLOD fix and IT WORKED!!! My son is playing NHL10 right now. I'm still tossing around the idea of buying a new slim & retiring this one to light duty in another room. Anyway, I'm pretty happy that the DIY fix worked & I have my toy back. I borrowed a heat gun and spent a grand total of $10 on some new thermal paste.

Well, I gave up after my 3rd YLOD fix lasted only days.

Proud owner of a new slim.

Well this is a first. I just wanted to play ratchet/clank , I get to the same part and than my PS3 turns off by itself and than a red light starts blinking non stop. I shut it off turn it back on , seems fine, start the game again and at the same exact part same thing happens. I have been playing a lot of these last 2 weeks, a lot more than usual.

My ps3 on the way out ?

Cleaned it thoroughly, let it sit for a bit, removed the disc and waited. After about 10 mins, it turned off again by itself blinking red light.

I bought an extended warranty for it but I don't want a replacement, I want the same one repaired.

Sounds like what happened to me...it is overheating and shutting off - this is not exactly the same as YLOD because you can get it back on for about 10 minutes. My fan didn't seem to be running after start and I think something is going on with the temp sensor and the trigger to the fan...I am convinced if I could rig it to sit in the deep freezer, I could get it working for a longer period of time. Although I will say that I was getting red, yellow and green dots all over the screen, the same as what happens to a computer with a video card that is on the way out.

Thanks for the info. I just turned the switch on the back off and I'm just going to let it sit there for a while, but ya, I still think it's on the way out.

You won't be able to get a full back-up out of the thing - consider yourself lucky if you can get your game saves before it freezes up

That's what I've been doing. I tried doing a backup a few weeks ago and after a few hours it said I didn't have enough room to back it up and didn't feel like redoing it right away and put it off. Now I regret it like I knew I would.

I did save my game saves on my SD card but some of them I can't save. (RB2 )

Now I'm wondering if it's an HD failure or the overheating issue. Also wondering if I should deactivate my games now or not before it's too late.

Red Blinking Light was what was happening to me (if you read back just one page, that''s what I've been discussing).

It started out, happened off and on - with no real rhyme or reason (sometimes during a game, sometimes during music play, sometimes not at all for day) - but while trying to back up my game save (when I finally realized it was on it's way out), it gave me the red blinking light and never came back out of its' coma.

Ya I was reading your post, sounds the same as me. Open area, well ventilated, no real problems prior to that, clean it regularly every week. Mine is the 80 gig before the MGS bundle. It has the 4 usb ports and the memory card reader, and ps2 BC.

I only really care about the USB port and memory card reader. Mine is still under retail warranty but i'd rather have it fixed.

Which route are you going Cymbol?

Getting the 250 gig Slim this week - then I'll get my 60 gig repaired later and move it to my room. I don't have any SACDs or anything - and I don't ever really play my old PS2 games like I thought I would, so the only thing I'll miss is the 4 USB ports, but people have said you can get ports for that.

One thing that will be nice is seeing the "DTS HD" light up on my receiver when I get the Slim hooked up.

I'm going to Futureshop now to see what my options are, even if I know what they are going to tell me. I'm hoping if they won't send it in they'll either a) give me store credit for the price difference or being generous b) they'll refund my money on the warranty and I can put that money towards saving my old one.

Then again, I heard once they repair it , it's only a 90 day warranty so I don't even know if it's really worth it.

I just hope that once it's "fixed", it's a done deal and not something that keeps popping up and having to be "re-fixed".

Good luck!

Well good news, just came back from Futureshop and they said the will send it in for repairs ( not sony ) and if it costs too much to fix it or takes more than 2 months than I get a new one. My warranty would also cover the repaired PS3 and since it expires on December 21 2010 I still have some time.

Is there any harm in deactivate and reactivating? If you deactivate, do all your games stay on your HD but you can't play them? I'm thinking, if i can still turn on my PS3, deactivate all my accounts and when I get it back just re-activate them.

What?! TWO MONTHS?!!!

Seriously dude - What will you do for two months. You'd actually have to physically play with your kids and look your wife in the eyes when she's talking to you. . . that's no way to live!

No kids and no wife so... but ya, I'm thinking about buying one temporarily. We'll see.

Not too happy though Oh well, hopefully it gets fixed, that's all that matters.
