I suggest you buy another unit. If the issue persists then we know for sure it's not a defect but your settings

Welcome. The receiver itself is very good quality, generally speaking. Keep us updated!

Yes I liked the receiver a lot, excellent quality and well build, but it's just that one issue that I've experience with it. Hopefully the cause of problem was in my settings because I would love to have that receiver again, plus I got an excellent deal on it from Crutchfield at the time, I've paid only $900.00 for it brand new. For that price, I should've kept it anyway, and now I'm kicking myself in the rear end for returning it. I'm going search on the internet for another good deal and rebuy it. I keep you all updated.

My settings and the speaker configuration were correct but to no avail. The receiver was still outputting Dolby Atmos when a 5.1 soundtrack was playing. I wanted the receiver to output the audio that's encoded on the Blu-ray disc, not upscaling everything to Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. My question is: Do all Dolby Atmos receiver upscale all soundtracks to Dolby Atmos regardless of its audio and speaker setup?
When my receiver (x6400h in a 7.1.4 Atmos setup) is in AUTO mode, every track that is above stereo defaults to Atmos, or DTS-X in the playback. It wants to send 5.1 or 7.1 DTS or TrueHD tracks to the full 7.1 with the .4 height channels . It turns on all 11 channels every time. When you push the green button on the remote, you can choose what you want as playback, but you have to check info sometimes, as it still turns on all 11 channels some times. If you hit the yellow button and go to DIRECT or hit it once more and go to PURE DIRECT, it is playing exactly what is encoded on the disc (5.1 or 7.1 TrueHD or DTS-HDMA without changing anything. The only time AUTO plays the correct track that is encoded on the disc is on mono, stereo, or Atmos/DTS:X tracks(as it plays all the channels anyway.)
It is a little annoying, as I just want to play what is on the disc, without hitting extra buttons, so I use DIRECT most of the time. The problem with DIRECT is that it disables the Audyssey settings. My old Elite receiver, just played what was on the disc, unless you played with the buttons. This one, you have to play with the buttons, to get what is on the disc, unless you leave it in DIRECT all the time. Seems like a step backwards, but I am used to it.

Interesting. I think you hit the nail right on the head. I can see why it can get annoying because in Auto mode, you would think that the receiver would play the correct audio that's on the disc.

Yeah, I think the purpose of 'auto' is that the receiver "automatically" decides what is best for your setup. I have the 11.1 channels, so it must think that the 11.1 channel options are best. I assume if I only had a 5.1 setup, it would be fine every time. It would leave mono and stereo alone and not be able to go past the 5.1 sound options. With my setup, auto really gives me a lot of choices, but 90+% of the time, I just want what is on the disc, so DIRECT works perfect. Good example, last night I watched Jack Reacher in 4K. It has a 7.1 DTS-HDMA track. The auto pushed me to DTS:X to use all the channels. I listened to it for a while, then hit Direct and went to the discs' 7.1 track. Frankly, Direct sounded much better, so who knows. As long as I know how it works, that seems fine for me.

This is exactly what was happening. I'd played with that receiver for about 3 1/2 hours, and I just couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. I thought the darn thing was defected, so I returned it and got a refund...Fortunately after receiving a lot of helpful infomation from fellow members here, I decided to order the Denon X4400H receiver again, and it's being delivered Monday.

I just got the avr-x6400 and changed my configuration from 7.1 pioneer elite sc-37 to 11.2 and I couldn't be happier! well, worth it and so glad I didn't go with the pioneer sc-lx901 like I considered...

it's only been hooked up a week so I'm still discovering things but so far there is nothing I dislike about it! it's my first Denon...

Glad I could help. It's too bad you returned the other, as you said you got it for a good price. Hopefully this one will last for a while. Good Luck.

My first Denon too. I went from an 83txh Elite from many years ago. I have really only owned Pioneer receivers, so this was a tester. Now that Onkyo makes them, I figured it was time.I decided the height channels were the thing, so just added those 4 to my already 7.1 setup from my Elite days. It is a pain the way it kicks on all channels in auto mode, but go with Direct and you get what is on the disc, which is fine too.

First time Denon owner here too.

Got a second hand X1300W yesterday after one of our cats decided to relieve himself on my Yamaha receiver. I must admit, it's a bit of a learning curve and the Auto/Direct situation had me scratching my head for brief spell trying to figure out why the Atmos/DTS:X channels were being engaged but now I think i'm getting used to it.

It's got a more muscular tone than the Yamaha which isn't a bad thing and I guess the Audyssey set up helped with that but I'm gonna stick with manual EQ. Copied over the Audyssey Flat EQ curve but without all the bells and whistles. Sounds a bit leaner but it doesn't rattle my doors as much

I don't like to use Audyssey either because, I'm use to manually adjust each speaker and volume individually to suit my preference.

My receiver was delivered Monday, set everything up and tesed various blu-rays to play in the Direct mode, and sure thing you guys were right on target. That was the dilemma! Not only it plays DTS Master Audio, and Dolby True HD in Direct Mode, but it also plays Dolby Atmos and DTS:X automatically, without requiring to change from Direct to Auto mode. A friend of mine is going to come over Friday to install my ceiling speakers for me because, I'm not quite handy nor skilled to do it myself. He's a handyman, and have all the tools that's needed for the job, so I just for pay him a few dollars for his time, and to do the project, then I will be good to go.

Currently an Onkyo owner(however did have Denon in the past).

Looks like I'll be getting back into Denon soon.

Our Mitsubishi WD60737 TV finally died(went on for nearly a decade though!). Therefore we'll be getting into 4k now( SONY XBR65X900F) , but the Onkyo TX-NR1009 just isn't up to snuff for that. We'll put it in a different room for something else as it functions just fine still for it's intended duties.

We're looking to purchase a Denon AVR X6400H to replace the TX-NR1009, it seems to be what we "need" for now and the near future. We (we meaning me, the wife being excluded here lol) are very excited!

I wish Denon had prepros , thought about going Mrantz AV7704 for that route. Settled on the Denon , it just looks prettier. Lol

Made the purchase today. On the way is the Denon X6400H, and the Sony 65X900F. The TV will be here Tuesday, not sure about the Denon hoping the same time.

Edit: In the meantime I snagged a $228 Silo 49" 4k , it can fill bedroom duties after the Sont arrives.

I think you will like the Denon very much. I have the 4400 and it's a nice receiver.
