I think I have yelled about their BD paper cases more than anyone and LAST YEAR even though that raised lettering etc looks cool unfort my package looked bad all corners were smashed and it was SO hard to get the disc out without doing even more damge to the case. It would have looked just as cool in the plastic case the booklet would have fit a lot better.

also that paper will get dirt and smudges very easy. Unlike the film the package for Last Year at Marienbad will age poorly.

last year at marienbad has arrived, my tv has been funky so I haven't watched yet (or finished The Third Man though I loved everything I saw) but I'm excited.

O.K.

I got Marienbad yesterday, but haven't had time to watch it. I did open it though.

Amazon shipped it in a large bubble envelope rather than their hard cardboard shrink-wrapped method. The case is PERFECT.... no creases, no bent corners.

I took the shrink wrap off, opened it, and removed the booklet....

The booklet slipped right out.... not sure what everyone else was talking about, especially when I saw people saying you had to remove it to get the actual disc out, because the disk was on the plastic spindle on the right (when case was open) and the booklet was in the crease on the left side.....

I'm not sure how this case is any different from The Third Man, Last Emperor, Bottle Rocket, etc etc...... I understand the booklet is thick, but it slipped right out just like the others.

Either way... I look forward to watching it.... the "Brilliant White" case may be an issue if you are eating some well buttered popcorn though

I'm pretty sure the issue we were all having was getting the damn thing out of the slipcover. If you removed the booklet prior to taking the slipcover off, you, sir, are a genius.

Why didn't I think of that?

ahh... yeah... the slip cover came off easily..... I guess if the corners get bent, it'd become a problem........ I just hold the case on the side, and push it out from the bottom or top...... easy enough

Were you eating some of the aforementioned buttered popcorn? Perhaps that "greased the wheel" so to speak.

Actually I got mine out the same way, a little more effort than most blus, but totally worth it for a Criterion.

Default The Red Shoes U.S.

Now that The Red Shoes U.K. is confirmed to be region locked I wonder if Criterion or someone else will release it in Region A.

I watched Marienbad last night.. what a trip of a movie. It's definitely one of those movies where you just have to let it do its thing and not get all annoyed because it's not making any sense because it will feel that way for the first little while.

I definitely see where David Lynch got the idea for Inland Empire and where Kubrick got the inspiration for the shots he did in the hotel in The Shining.

About the packaging for "Last Year At Marienbad"... this was posted over at DVD Talk...

Quote:
My buddy e-mailed his complaint about the tight packaging to Criterion. The response he got back was that they're aware that the packaging was too tight on the first run due to an error at the packaging facility that has since been corrected. They offered to send him one of the extra slipcases they had at the production offices that would fit better.
So, Beta... you might've actually gotten one of the later packaging cases, if yours slipped out as easily as it sounds.

based on this I'll have to watch tonight, even with my somewhat busted TV.

edit - can I send an email to get a better fitting marienbad slipcover? I thought mine was defective!

I sent an e-mail to Jon Mulvaney over at Criterion yesterday, so I'll let you guys know what his response is regarding the slipcover replacement.

This is DVD-related.

Let me repeat that so I don't get yelled at:

This is DVD-related.

Got an email from Amazon that says "Save 25% on Essential Art House New Releases‏"

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...e/-/1297797011

I haven't really followed these releases, so I don't know how the prices are compared to normal. Hopefully some of you find this useful in saving (by spending more) more!

Thanks for the link. I would like to pick up "Wild Strawberries" but I am thinking it has to appear on Blu-ray soon.

Just letting you guys with the packaging problem know that I did get a response from Jon Mulvaney, and he will be sending me a new slipcover for "Last Year At Marienbad." Here's what he said...

Quote:
Hi Chris,

Thanks for your email! I am sorry to hear of your disappointment with the packaging for LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD. We are well aware that the slipcase is too tight, and this was due to a packaging error in the first round of printing. This has been corrected at our packaging facility. We have some extra slipcases on hand at our production offices that will fit your Blu-ray and I'll be happy to send one to you in the mail if you could kindly provide me with your mailing address.

Thank you for supporting Criterion, and please let me know if you have further questions!

Sincerely,

Jon Mulvaney
