Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Year: 2009
Director: Michael Bay
Starring: Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox

I… I don’t think I have the words for this…

I had heard a lot about RotF over the last year. Hearing nothing but “it sucks”, “it’s awful”, “it’s ridiculously dumb” and all sorts of similar dialogue. And to be honest? It is exactly that. But I didn’t expect it to be THIS bad!

The film is too dumb, tries too hard for dick and fart jokes and isn’t nearly as funny or enchanting as the first one. I’m a big fan of Shia Lebeouf and looking at Megan Fox is always fun, but one this was severely lacking from this film that the first one had, and all films that I love have: HEART.

Honestly, I paused the move once to stretch and get another drink (a very, very strong drink with how this was going ) and I was shocked, appalled and mortified that I was at the 89 minute mark. And there was still another freaking hour to go!

Aside from this sequel having ZERO heart, I can’t really describe everything that went wrong here, but i'll try:

- film is way, way ridiculously too long (2.5 hours has never passed this slow)
- there is no story. And at the same time, way too many. As soon as one starts, another one kind of pops up, and they’re all jumbled together in a big all of “who cares?” that beats us over the head until I wished and prayed I was in a coma.
- too much “out of left field” craziness.
[Show spoiler]Old, grandpa robots? The matrix? All Spark just makes Decepticons (or something)? They drop Megatron in the Atlantic Ocean and the mass is so great he’s stuck there but other robots can go down and fine and then he can swim? Old robot was gonna take over once the last Prime was dead, why couldn’t he come back with Prime alive? Shia’s mom is high in like 2 minutes from the pot brownies (that have a freaking pot leaf on the bag! Come on!) Like Shia would actually go to college when dating Megan Fox? and an assortment of other “WTF is happening now?!” mayhem

- awful characters. I don’t mind Shia and Megan’s characters. But everyone else was about as deep as a puddle and had as much personality as a piece of cardboard. I guess Shia’s roommate wasn’t terrible, but everyone else was extremely generic and awful.
- the jokes. I laughed at about 10 of the 100,000,000 jokes the film tries to make. Constant “my balls” jokes get really old once you’re past the age of 16, and get even older and more tiresome when you hear one every 4.5 seconds
- the robots. WTF IS HAPPENING?! If EVER there was a reason I will avoid the third one, it would be the awful robots, followed by the excruciating length of the film. I don’t know or care if these characters are actual Transformers from the cartoons / toys, but these are awful. Especially of course, the twins. And why they have so much screen times boggles my mind.
- more robots. Some of the creatures are just ridiculous. Since we don’t have some alien cat / alien hyrbid on earth, I’m guessing that’s from their home planet? Eesh. Kind of a neat idea, but executed poorly

Is it hard for a sequel to be better than the first? Yes. Usually a sequel tries to be bigger, louder, faster and more entertaining since the first films gives us a solid base for the story. Of course a sequel needs a story and usually it isn’t as advanced or detailed, but a story none the less. But like I said above, not only does RotF fail in that regard, it fails in EVERY regard. Nothing here is better than the first film (except for the amount of outrageously gorgeous girls in “college”, which by the way, I’m sick of seeing colleges that don’t look like colleges. Shia’s college isn’t real. And it bothers the piss out of me that they show super attractive girls and marijuana brownies on ‘move in’ day in an obnoxious fashion) and if ever a film made me feel less enthusiastic about a future film, I haven’t seen it yes. Congratulations Revenge of the Fallen, you have completely killed my spirit

It literally gave me a migraine!

as soon as i heard the generic Linkin Park song start to kick in i shouted and cheered in happiness that the nightmare was over

Have I seen worse? Shockingly, yes. The few lone bright spots (Shia, looking at Megan, other attractive girls, great visuals and some fun action scenes) save this from being a complete disaster, but it’s not by much.

A truly horrid mess on all levels imo.
As I told the gf after it was (finally) over:
"Revenge of the Fallen is like having sudden diarrhea anywhere but a toilet - you take nothing good away from the experience."

****no disrespect to those who enjoy the film, just certainly wasn’t something I liked, even though I love the first one (4.5/5)****

PQ: 5/5 - absolutely exceptional
AQ: 5/5 - aside from the awful dialogue, which sadly comes with the sound, this is a beast of an audio track

1/5

Yeah this one was weak. I still enjoyed it because of its technical aspects. This, Avatar, War or the Worlds, Lord of the Rings, Terminator Salvation are great disc to challenge your HT setup. Films like this you will enjoy more with a nice HT setup, i think thats why drives some of these films. The "cool effect".

As far as the comic book based movies go, its my second favorite behind only The Dark Knight.

But this is one of the ones that goes above being a comic book based movie imo. It's a very good movie period.

Norton turns in a great performance as Banner. Is he 100% the Banner of the comics? No. Am I fine with that? Yes, because I love the Banner that he plays. (How many more times will I say Banner in this paragraph???) He does a great job of getting the character across, this guy has this gigantic power inside of him, but all he wants is to be rid of it and what it makes him do. He hates it, wants it gone. And Norton, to me, really makes you feel that, you feel for this guy, you want him to be successful in becoming happy again.

The supporting cast is mostly good. Liv Tyler isn't on par with the rest of the major supporting (what?) actors, but she isn't bad. Tim Roth does great as Blonsky and is second to only Norton in the film as far as performances go. He's really good at bringing this character to the screen and really, really making you hate him. Also, Tim Roth is just generally awesome.

The story of the film is handled very well. Some criticized this movie for being nothing more than action and no story, but I disagree. It's not even that heavy in the action. There is only 3 sequences with Hulk fighting. The rest of the time its all about Banner and his quest to rid himself of this curse and return to being a normal person again and then, near the end,
[Show spoiler]his attempt to utilize this thing for good and try to control it for the better instead of letting it just run rampant.

I think the movie was brushed aside because for some reason all people saw was the action and didn't look at it more closely and watch it for the character of Banner and instead saw
[Show spoiler]Hulk bringing down a helicopter or fighting another big "monster"
and said, "Oh, that's just a big, loud, dumb action movie..."
I couldn't disagree more with that; the action and the characters/story go hand in hand in this one.

Rating - 5/5
i'm not a Hulk fan - at all, but i still enjoyed this more than i thought i would

wow. all i've kind of heard is how much Tokyo Drift sucks, but i guess that's just because it has all new characters?

i'm not real big on knowledge of Japanese culture, so i'm going in with an open mind, but expecting it to be enjoyed less than the other three, but then again i didn't expect to enjoy these three nearly as much as i did so who knows

i didn't know this one was your favorite of the bunch! (so far) neat fact

I don't remember if I mentioned to you before watching it that it is much more serious than the other two or not. I like that about it. The first one is definitely more fun, but this one is more, like you say, "mature" toned. This is the movie that my "sad Diesel" avatar comes from
i remembered about 20 minutes in but i liked it a lot.
haha always good to know where a "sad Diesel" avatar originates from

I agree, its obviously not very mysterious in what's going to happen next (there are a few things) but it doesn't need to be and it doesn't try to be that, so it doesn't matter.

For the effects, are you talking about the
[Show spoiler]cave chase
sequences? Those were done with them in the cars in green screen and they built some
[Show spoiler]'caves'
I think and filmed that stuff then put them together (at least that's how I remember them saying it in the special features). But a lot of the stunts and things were actually done practically with real cars and not CG, so I hope you didn't think the real stuff looked fake
yep, exactly. in particular the
[Show spoiler]air / gas canisters and some of the quick shots of buildings and the caves looked really CGI-like. and some of the scenes in the opening scene and a few others. nothing that lasted long, just stuff that you could tell where a real car was and then it looked completely CGI'd
.

hmm, when i get these i'll have to watch the special features. that would e intense!

Quote:
As for your question. Are you talking about when
[Show spoiler]Mia was showing Dom the charger and talking about "How it was like she knew you'd be coming back"? If so, this was after he left her in whatever country they were in in the beginning (I don't remember) and went back to LA. She was working on the car and working undercover with the FBI to clear Dom's name to get him to come back, she wanted the car to be ready for him when he came back.
duh. i was totally thinking she meant before the film started. i was like, "WTF? they were right there together?" thanks, that makes sense now.

Btw, you need to see Tokyo Drift! I think the first is the best, with the 4th being close behind (though it can go either way) then TD and then 2F2F.
Diesel also pointed that out (my question) but thanks as well tbizzle i was thinking of BEFORE the movie started and i was confused since the film opens with them together

The story began as so many (too many) Disney stories do. There's a beautiful princess or a handsome prince, or both.

There were too many songs for my liking, although I did like one or two of them.

It elicited an emotional response. I cared about the two main characters and Chip (for some reason).

Would definitely watch it again.

i respect and understand why some people buy certain films for demos for visuals or audio (especially if they have a bad ass system), but i would never go about buying blu-rays that way.

one of my requirements is, "if someone comes over, can they grab it off the shelf and can i enjoy it?" and the answer (obviously for me) for RotF is a resounding "DEAR GOD NO!"

so even with it's technical massive awesomeness, i couldn't bring myself to buy this just for that.

Yeah you are right, you shouldn't buy i movie because the quality of the movie. I dont disagree at all. I just like testing my equipment. After i got my a2-300 (SUB) i was trying to watch anything that had LFE. But besides that i agree. I also agree that ROFT is trash but i like it "guilty as charged"

I could address some of your issues with the film and maybe answer a few of the questions....but it's late and I don't like it as much as Iron Man 2 so I won't go through point by point on this one

Like I've said before, I enjoy it but am still it isn't as good as the first or as awesome as it looked to be before it was released
When I first saw it (at midnight no less) I really enjoyed it, but after watching it again and again my score went down until settling at 3.5/5.

I wrote this comparison up on a thread a year ago:

Quote:
Originally Posted by Diesel View Post

What I liked more about the first:

Optimus - he seemed much cooler in the first one on rewatching.
Optimus's dialogue (including opening and closing of the film)
Ironhide - he actually had a place in the movie....
Ratchet - same...
Megan Fox - I liked her character more in the first one, she is annoying in the second. And on a more shallow note, she was much more attractive in this one.
The parents - they are actually pretty funny in this one
Megatron - he looks cooler in this one and seems more evil imo.
Starscream - he isn't a...well you know.
The side characters - Anthony Anderson was hilarious in the movie; and I don't mind the Australian woman.
Lennox and Epps - bigger (and better) parts
Mojo - he didn't "dominate" anyone
The final battle - it was just all around better imo (though Optimus is insanely awesome at the end of 2, the fight was too short)
The head government guy - Voight > the guy who wants to shut down NEST in RotF.
The humor - nearly all of it was funny
The feel of the movie - something about it just feels different, in a good way.

What I liked more about the second:

The mid-movie fight - There was one
Simmons - I thought the character was annoying in the first but liked him a little in the second
...and that's it really.

Things that were equally awesome in both movies:

Bumblebee

My final verdict on the films:

I LOVE the first movie.
I like the second movie.

The second movie hasn't held up nearly as well the first for me under repeat viewings.

I hope the 3rd returns is much more like the first than the 2nd; though it is unlikely since the writers aren't returning.

And more recently I wrote about it in my review of the first one, which you might remember, but that was before you'd seen the second one obviously.

don't feel the need to. most of my questions are rhetorical and won't make me enjoy the film anymore, the just popped up in my mind as the film went on (and on and on...)

haha i love your "Mojo didn't 'dominate' anyone" line

and i remember thinking (forgot to add it though) about why Voight wasn't there, and why Anthony Anderson and the gorgeous Australian girl weren't there. that kind of pissed me off, especially Voight since he was a major character in the first one

Good good. Go in with low expectations and you'll have a ball.

I think it had the best first and second acts of the whole series but was really let down in the last which is why some people go away thinking it sucks. It's just a fun movie so no one is expecting it to be perfect.

if you've been able to pick up on my film tastes at all, i'm a big time drama / slow burner type film guy. of course i do enjoy some action, comedy and whatnot, but drama is where my heart lies. so i was skeptical about this franchise, but as Diesel knows well, i seem to enjoy everything Paul Walker is in (i've deemed it the weirdest man crush ever ) so i gave the films a chance and i've loved the three i've seen.

which is kind of surprising since action / adventure is NOT my cup of tea.
so i'll keep expectations low for Tokyo Drift and hope i enjoy it so i can buy them all and not have to leave out TD (especially since the spines have numerals on them which would drive me crazy to see I, II, IV and not III)

and i remember thinking (forgot to add it though) about why Voight wasn't there, and why Anthony Anderson and the gorgeous Australian girl weren't there. that kind of pissed me off, especially Voight since he was a major character in the first one

I'm surprised you didn't mention the dominating in your review....or did you mentally block it? When I watch the movie I look away when those parts come up, it makes me think they don't happen.

I was that he wasn't there too. He definitely should have been around. Instead of the guy from 24 (who's awesome) playing a totally different character than his one in the first film who died, Voight's character should have been in charge of NEST....not that we saw that guy for more than 5 minutes.

The other two would have been welcomed to return by me. I love Anderson in the first film, he's hilarious.

The donut scene..."I ate the whole plate...THE WHOLE PLATE!"

Of course, you're batting a thousand with Diesel movies, so no worries

By the way, I forgot to ask you. Do you agree with me that Fast & Furious was BY FAR the best job Walker has done? Obviously that doesn't mean that much acting wise, but it was nice to not sound like he was reading cards this time compared to 2 Fast and at least part of all his other movies.

I'll have a review up for The Innocents some time tomorrow, it's bed time and I don't feel like writing one up right now.

haha probably subconsciously, yes. it also helped it happened early on and there was more than enough "WTF?" moments that smothered it so i forgot about it

Anderson brought a lot to the first film. a lot of charm, wit, and laughs. man, i could never watch these films back to back knowing how much the second one dropped the ball. jeez...

YES! he was like, an actual actor!
he even had some great characterization in his facial expressions and body language at times. really, really different and he seems to have grown as an actor. i don't know if it was just his voice and how he talked that made it seem that way, but something changed. and changed for the better

1/5
Yep, all the same stuff that aggitates other viewers aggitates you too.

For whatever reason, all the major issues you and others have mentioned never really bothered me. I'll have to see if it holds up to repeated viewings.

As far as the comic book based movies go, its my second favorite behind only The Dark Knight.

But this is one of the ones that goes above being a comic book based movie imo. It's a very good movie period.

Rating - 5/5
As I have mentioned, comic book movies don't do much for me. The Dark Knight and Batman Begins are notable exceptions.

When I started watching The Incredible Hulk, I had the same reaction. I loved how Norton's character had a proper background story and motivations for what he was doing. The first hour was excellent.

It was ruined somewhat by the focus on unrealistic intense action scenes for the remainder of the movie. Now I know that the hulk is supposed to be an action hero and that's what I should have anticipated, but the first half of the story spoiled me by being so much better than expected.

The overall result is that I can watch the movie from time to time without being annoyed by the lack of story in the second half.

3.5/5

I turned the first one off before the 30 minute mark when
[Show spoiler]the dog peed on some robot or other and it came out with a lame joke about rusting
so I know there's no way I could make it through ROTF without a lot of mental pain.

I enjoyed the review more than I would enjoy the movie

Watched the Karate Kid remake last night...i guess id give it a 3/5...it was ok at best but i wouldnt watch it again... Jaden Smith is awful and seems to be getting advice from daddy because he seems to have the same delivery and expressions which gets annoying...

Jackie Chan was surprisingly pretty good in this movie...i like how they brought in elements from the original...the beach fight in the original and the fight in the park in this one... the bad guy class chanting, no pain, no fear, no mercy(not sure if it was no fear lol) ... the bad guy hurting his leg in the tournament....

elements from the original i didnt like were the love story, hes just way too young to take it seriously.... and the end, the new crane kick is just ridiculously stupid lol...

overall, it was a bit too corny and kiddie to me though....

You make me feel ashamed to own this movie . I remember when I bought the Wal-Mart exclusive (for the IMAX PQ) my roommate asked if it was a good movie. I replied "well not really, but it's kind of entertaining and reference quality." Sometimes you have to say things out loud to realize how ridiculous you sound.
