another film in the franchise, and another success

gotta write this fast because the gf and i have dinner reservations tonight

did i enjoy the hell out of this one? HELL YES
i found it odd and surprising how mature and slow it is. it's also MUCH more serious than the first two (haven't seen Tokyo Drift yet) but i kind of liked that. of course, the absurd opening racing / chasing scene doesn't fit with the mature tone the film takes, but oh well

i mean seriously - characters act super serious with a serious(er) plot than the first two, yet the car chases / races sequences are almost more over the top and laughably unrealistic as possible. the two kind of clash in a sense, but i really didn't mind.

Diesel was awesome again, and a toned down bad ass, but he still has scenes with a shotgun with are very much and Paul Walker gets powerbombed by Diesel, which looked fun and painful and the last death in the film is grotesquely bad ass. loved it!

the writing was pretty awful however. well, not "awful" but predictable. while we were watching the gf and i would try and guess the next line of dialogue, and we were right about 70% of the time but does it bother me? no. does it take away from the overall score? fudge no!

saw this on blu (first film in the series i've seen on blu) and i don't know if they all have laughably bad CGI in some scenes, or just this one, but there were numerous "wow that looks bad" scenes that blu-ray shows off much more than a dvd or netflix instant. but does that take away from enjoyment?

noooooooooooooooope.

will i be buying this? HELL YES. i think i like Fast & Furious a bit more than 2 Fast 2 Furious, but of course the first is still the best and most fun imo. and of course Diesel is much better in this franchise than Tyrese (which i found odd they didn't even mention) but each brings their own to the respective films.

there were also a lot less scenes focused on the racing/ cars, which was also surprising. but, even though overall there were less scenes, the scenes here were louder, fast, more tense, better put together, longer and had a lot more "close calls" (hitting people, crashes, absurdity) than the first two did.

i still think the first film is better directed, especially the racing sequences, but this one isn't too shabby either

and the story for Brian (walker) is almost the exact same as the first "do i turn in my friend? or do i not?" although it plays out with a twist and the ending is awesome (but of course absurd) and i look forward to seeing Fast Five ( ugh, what a name) to see if it picks up where this one leaves off, or if it picks up a year or so later.

also, to those who have seen this (like you Diesel ):
[Show spoiler]they mention how Dom left, and how Letty wanted to "ring him back" but the film picks up when they're together unless i missed something, did we figure out what was happening or what happened when he left / why he left? i'm guessing i missed that part

another fun film. and a great film to watch before a night out on the town

loved it

even though Fast & Furious gets a 4.5/5 and i gave the first a 4/5, i've been meaning to watch it again and bump it up to 4.5/5 because i really only dislike the last race segment that seemed a bit off. so the scores are the same and i still prefer the first then this one, then 2 Fast 2 Furious.

4.5/5

I don't remember if I mentioned to you before watching it that it is much more serious than the other two or not. I like that about it. The first one is definitely more fun, but this one is more, like you say, "mature" toned. This is the movie that my "sad Diesel" avatar comes from

When he
[Show spoiler]was holding that engine over that guys head

I love when he's
[Show spoiler]bleeding like crazy and just calmly says, "I don't like being shot"

I agree, its obviously not very mysterious in what's going to happen next (there are a few things) but it doesn't need to be and it doesn't try to be that, so it doesn't matter.

For the effects, are you talking about the
[Show spoiler]cave chase
sequences? Those were done with them in the cars in green screen and they built some
[Show spoiler]'caves'
I think and filmed that stuff then put them together (at least that's how I remember them saying it in the special features). But a lot of the stunts and things were actually done practically with real cars and not CG, so I hope you didn't think the real stuff looked fake

As for your question. Are you talking about when
[Show spoiler]Mia was showing Dom the charger and talking about "How it was like she knew you'd be coming back"? If so, this was after he left her in whatever country they were in in the beginning (I don't remember) and went back to LA. She was working on the car and working undercover with the FBI to clear Dom's name to get him to come back, she wanted the car to be ready for him when he came back.
Are you guys having an emoticon usage competition?

Alien 3

First (and last) viewing.

It started well enough, but then the cast of the crazy British criminal underclass started to get really annoying. Was this intended as a comedy? The first two had a certain tension and were shot with skill. This just didn't work for me.

Some of the special effects looked very dated too. It also contradicted some of the established rules of the universe such as
[Show spoiler]Kane dying a few minutes after the thing was removed from his face in Alien, while Ripley cruises around the entire time with a creature gestating in her body.

By far the weakest installment so far, although I haven't seen the final one yet.

PQ 3.5
AQ 3.5 (very uneven and I had to keep changing the level)

Overall 2.5/5

I'd love to, it's just that it all depends on what movie is picked, what hours I'll work and such. Will keep an eye though, thanks.

Much better than I expected it to be, can't wait to see it again. Also not sure who's hotter now, Emmy Rossum or Jamie Chung, wow. Starting Terminator Salvation.

I was actually being a smart a$$, if you care to open the spoiler tags you'll see a poor attempt at humor - implying you guys are maniacs and may be into pagan rituals. ...................

So does ".....all over the place." mean MAYBE??!!!

Gran Torino

year: 2009
director: clint eastwood
starring: clint eastwood (walt kowalski), ben vang (thao), ahney her (sue)

it's amazing what some films inspire. i think one thing Gran Torino SHOULD inspire is understand other cultures and races and learning that no matter what nationality you are or what different cultures do, some things are universal. but i didn't expect Gran Torino to leave me wanting to do housework!

as odd as it sounds, learning about Mr. Kowalski, and how he's stern, hard nosed, a prick essentially, no nonsense and determined to finish what he starts, he's the type of guy that doesn't do "fun" things, but does what needs to be done. i'm a lazy person naturally at times (even though i have a propensity for cleaning because i'm OCD with having a dirty house) so during parts of Gran Torino i wanted to just up and just start working, chopping wood, hammering s*** and other stuff odd, i know.

anyway, the film, as most probably know because i'm behind the eight ball here, is a strict, hard nosed "American everything" old man who is a war vet who lives in a neighborhood that has become all Hmong with residents. he doesn't like them, and makes no qualms about it, and they don't like him. hell, he doesn't like any race. and there's no excluding Caucasians as well. but it's not the skin tone, it's how they act: gang bangers, making your car look hideous, using slang terms, not working hard, being a "p****" and being in a gang, and everything under the sun. the best part is he doesn't just grumble about this in the comfort of his home. he says it right to their faces which is kind of awesome, but also kind of sad, because even though the character is written extremely awesome and is a bad ass, there are a lot of people like this is in the world, and they are certainly not awesome. dangerous line to cross because i hope some punk redneck 12 year old doesn't try and imitate Kowalski his whole life because that's not the point of the film.

but when his neighbor, Thao, who doesn't want to be a gang banger and has bigger aspirations, but still pisses of Kowalski when he tries to steal his car forms an odd bond, a friendship is formed between the most unlikely of individuals.

there was one scene in the film that i had to pause and think about and it shocked me a bit how i wasn't surprised when it happened, but only after i thought about it:
[Show spoiler]when Sue invites Kowalski over for their BBQ. and he agrees. it's an awesome scene that shows how far both people have come. but the trick is that, this is 47 minutes in to the film! and with the first 20 minutes, i NEVER would have suspected or believed that he would be in his neighbors house enjoying food with them.
it's a sign of terrific writing, realistic writing, great pacing and a believable story. a lot of other films could have fudged this up and i would have said, "oh come on..." but how Eastwood directs and writes the film is wonderful.

there are some great scenes of humor in the film too, of course, because of how racist and uncaring Kowalski is. i love how Kowalski
[Show spoiler]always screws up names, especially calling Thao, "Toad"

the directing is great, as is most of the acting (all except for when some characters try and express anger and yell). nothing too flashy, which is probably vintage Eastwood (only seen like, 4 of his films) and seems to fit his personality.

one character i couldn't stand though was
[Show spoiler]the Priest
ugh i hated how he was so smothering and always there. like, every 10 minutes he would just be wandering through the neighborhood :choke: he was extremely annoying imo.

i did enjoy the relationship between Sue and Kowalski though. she was great and didn't take his racist comments to heart and actually made jokes out of them. they were like complete 180's of each other, but both enjoyed each others company.

the only thing i can really think as to being a flaw would be the lack of surprise in the film and the typical portrayal of the characters and story. Kowalski is a hard edged bad ass who learns to enjoy and accept other cultures (or at least some people FROM other cultures) and then
[Show spoiler]learns to be at peace.
and of course Thao
[Show spoiler]learns what hard work and determination gets you and learns to stand up for himself and be strong
among other things. it's not really a flaw, but it's one of those things you know is coming, but doesn't wreck the film at all.

although i must say i was a bit surprised by the ending, but i guess i should have see something like that coming. tricky, tricky Eastwood!

PQ: 4.5/5 - a lot of dark, shadowy scenes, but scenes that are well lit are very well detailed
AQ: 3.5/5 - not a lot of sound going on, but sometimes the dialogue was hard to hear, almost like people were too far away from their marks, had to constantly turn up the volume.

4.5/5

My apartment needs a clean if you're in the neighborhood.

I'm starting to appreciate Eastwood's films even more, especially when he directs.

Gran Torino had a mixed reception. A lot of people argue that the acting, with the exception of Eastwood, was poor. I disagree and it worked for me.

I've thought about this often and I think this is close to Eastwood's best acting performance. He's convincing at every point. It rings true because there are people like that in the world. Lots of them. And the vast majority are old and set in their ways, thinking racism is acceptable. Maybe this will make at least one person in the world re-think that ignorant view.

I like Gran Torino and have watched it several times. My local store has a ton of used copies for $4.99 and can't sell them

Gotta love the
[Show spoiler]scenes where he's teaching Thao to act and talk like a man.
