As did I. Though I usually try to go into most films blind.

Y Tu Mama Tambien has been pushed back to 2011 because of the scheduling issues with Cuaron. And as far as I know, Del Toro said at Comic Con that Cronos has also been delayed to 2011.

Hmmm, I thought Cronos was December. Oh, well, if not, doesn't hurt my $ either way. Unless something awesome replaces it.

My choice for 1 of the villains:

I personally preferred Inception to The Dark Knight.

I loved Inception, actually saw it twice.
And I hated The Dark Knight.

Inception fell quite flat for me.

+1, the only 2 Nolan films I can tolerate, although I liked Heath in TDK but that's about it.

Inception is a good film. I hesitate to call it great until I can see it a couple more times to see how it holds under repeat viewings. However, as far as mind benders go it's not in the same league as Marienbad.

One thing I fear with Nolan is that his films will become over-produced. He has a blank check for any project he wishes. I just hope there's not hope there's not "too much money on the screen" in future projects. Less money= more creativity (not always but it goes well with a talented guy with Nolan. See Memento).

Back to Criterion. The New Hollywood set. Dear Lord make this a blu box. Can you imagine how beautiful a film like The Last Picture show will look in glorious HD black and white?

Anybody want to make guesses on the price of the set?

Blu-ray $120 (if a lot of extras). $99 if lean.

Thoughts?

It will most likely be blu (why would Criterion release Easy Rider on dvd-only?), so The Last Picture Show WILL look awesome in HD!

I can't wait for announcements. This year has been awesome.

I would say $150 retail. 7 blus = a little over $20 a film.

Maybe, because Sony has already released it on blu-ray? It's possible that Criterion only got the DVD rights for it? Who knows?

If we take Criterion's current pricing structure at $39.95 MSRP for blu-ray, then the set would have a $279.65 MSRP. Criterion's own selling price is $31.95 on their website, which would make the set have a price of $223.65. Hopefully, it won't be that expensive, though.

That was my point. If it's out on blu already, why does Criterion release a dvd version after? I can bet the reason why this set was never released by Sony in the first place was because they were going dvd-only, not wanting to spend for blu. Then here comes Criterion....(in turn takes an extra year).

I am not doubting it's blu. This whole rumor is starting to become true, and it included this will be a blu-ray set. If this whole thing is true, we will see in a week (or this week).

Plus, The Last Picture Show recently got a new dvd. Easy Rider got a blu-ray. So this has to be a blu set. It's got 3 of the biggest films Criterion ever had (Five Easy Pieces, The Last Picture Show, Easy Rider) along with some things I can't wait to see (Drive, He Said/A Safe Place/The King of Marvin Gardens). Oh, and Head.

If the box set if true, then Easy Rider will be the same edition already released by Sony. That blu looked fantastic and I really don't see them spending extra money on another new master.

I don't see the licensing being for DVD only seeing as some of those films were recently re-released again.

The deal was most likely made because those films (Easy Rider being the exception) were not high on the Blu-ray list for Sony (who should be working furiously on Lawrence of Arabia). Criterion can get to them much sooner than Sony.

I think there's also a possibility the set is not 6 films--- could be a vol1 and vol2 deal. In any case, films like Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces and TLPS are getting spines.

it should be a little different as Criterion is licensing it from Rialto.
No Criterion bd will ever be the exact same as a Studio Canal release most likely because Studio Canal is actively taking away licensing rights from Criterion, like what happened with "The Third Man".
