When
[Show spoiler]Mufasa dies
(tagged since I don't think CZAR has seen it and don't know if he knows about that) is hands down my saddest moment in any movie ever. When I was a kid that just messed me up
I cried like I was Squid

Green Lantern - First Flight

Unconventional title to choose for a review eh?

It won't be long.

Clearly I'm a comic-book movie fan as illustrated by my collection and this one is no exception.

The voice acting is really good and fits the characters well, I love the way the animation looks, and its good fun to watch

Rating - 4.5/5

(Note - Though I love the movie, for some reason it sits on its own scale with other comic book animated movies and its 4.5/5 is not equivalent to a 4.5/5 for say, How to Train Your Dragon or Despicable Me )

[Show spoiler]deserve to be abused/etc? In other words: enforced a mental illness of hate/gulit of one's own gender?
. Also wasn't the film in "Eden", where Genesis (i.e. theological perspective) says that
[Show spoiler](1) God told Adam/Eve not to pick fruit from Tree of Knowledge, (2) Serpent tempted Eve (translation: women effed up), (3) Eve took fruit, gave some to Adam, (4) Adam and Eve ate fruit (5) God kicked Adam and Eve (i.e., humanity) out of Eden, and forbid them from Tree of Life (from a life free of sin/pain), all because momma bear effed up From that standpoint, it seems reasonable that the director is suggesting (1) "She" feels guilty about her son's death, and her guilt/mental illness is based on/fueled by (2) a theological perspective of women being the source of evil/sin/etc in our world. I think the director may be trying to show us how effed up this Biblical/Genesis perspective is (from which Western culture is based, being Judeo-Christian). So he just shows us the extremes of a mental illness which is consistent with it.

The point where I get fuzzy is: if the theological perspecitve/GEnesis (that women are the source of sin/evil in the world) is bad, then what is the film saying instead? that we actually live in a God-absent world where everyone is effed, instead of before (with God) where only "bad" humans (that succommed to the female-originated sin) were effed?

I know...need to watch it again.

Everything you said was 100% accurate IMO. Loved the spouse-counselor analysis! Great insight there. Also, regarding her
[Show spoiler]illness/guilt
, its true that she was doing whatever she could to avoid it, like you said.
I completely agree with the highlighted portions. Good insight. As i mentioned before Squid brought something new to the table but i still think its a mixture of both theories.

The woman has always been the victim. Even in the bible. She tricked the man but she was the deceived by satan. I guess its all how your religious views are being that this film could either way.

The Bible states those things, yes. But
[Show spoiler]the film isnt about women in general. The film is about one specific woman and how old writings and myths (all generated by insecure men ) are aiding in the perpetuation and progress of her mental disorder.

KEY to remember is that she was well down the path BEFORE her son died.

Look at it this way. What if someone suffered from extreme irrational paranoia. Then, at night, that person actually (really and truly) sees a person, hunched over, wearing a hoody, scoot across their front yard? Fuel baby. Water and fertilizer on the seeds.

The same is true with the woman in the movie. She had a problem. Then she started reading and studying the history of the plight of women. This added fuel and reinforced her insecurities. People are talking about God and Satan and the evil of women. But where was that in the movie? In HER HEAD. We witness an actual flesh and blood woman losing her noodle. What origionally planted the seeds? I dont know, but I'd venture to guess a combo of genetics and childhood trauma. BUT thats not what I'm am supposed to do. I am to watch the film and see what story is told. I can REACH really really far to find parallels, but for what purpose?

The director is not presenting these themes, the character is exploring and embrasing them. Huge difference IMO. The director isnt saying God is great, or God bailed on us, or Satan Rules, or Women are the gateway to Evil, or Nature is Evil. The character is grasping at, embracing, rejecting (in a very confused way) some of the notions, which depicts the depths of her illness. Its all just to show how troubled SHE is, not to depict the true plight of mankind.

Remember that ultimately she was the victim. First, a victim of sickness, then the victim of a Mans inability to endure emotional hardship and to love her unconditionally.

In her final hours she FEARED abandonment and bolted the wheel to his leg. On the surface that looks crazy, but what does it say. She desparately WANTS HELP. She rages and screams "But you promised to help me!" She wants help and to be loved. He, with all his academic knowledge and husbandly unconditional love, should have bound her wrists and put her on a leash and returned her to town to receive intense clinical help. But instead, he allows his anger to rule himself and he takes her life. He murders his wife, a sick person, who is PLEADING for help. He behaved in a non Christly fashion. He exhibited intolerance, unforgiveness and revenge. If anything the film shows that MAN has always blamed women for his own shortcomings and that MAN is truly evil, not women. Perhaps the title Antichrist IS fitting, and it describes MAN.
Reading your spoiler i can see that you are confused about relgion. Everything that you mentioned is apart of God and Satan. A women gone
[Show spoiler]Crazy can be looked as her being possessed. The same as a person that is a "*****" or "sex fiend" they have LUST DEMONS in them. You have to really read on religion to understand.

Squid you should of watched the special features? i saw a clip on the director explaining the religious part of the movie. He even explains the
[Show spoiler]Thresh hold between Hell and Earth. The bridge in the film is suppose to represent that gateway.

[Show spoiler]So why is the field filled with dead women at the end?

[Show spoiler]This is a great film about the hardships endured by two immigrants that want to make the trip to America, as well stay there and start a new life. Rosa and Enrique know nothing of America other than it's the land of opportunity, where even the poor people have electricity and a flushing toilet. After losing both of their parents at the hands of the local violent and oppressive military, they set out on their journey to America. They endure a long and grueling trip - hitchhiking, fighting off a robber, crawling through tunnels and being swarmed by rats, and so on. At first, they both find jobs, get new clothes and begin to learn English. They're making a new life... and they are happy. But they soon realize how difficult life in America can be. Rosa says "Life is very hard here. We are not free".

After losing his job, running from immigration, and
[Show spoiler]suffering the tragic loss of his sister Rosa, Enrique feels lost. The morning after his sister's death,
he finds his old straw hat buried in his drawer. As he puts in on, he looks in the mirror and realizes who he is and where he came from. He joins the workers outside where he previously lost out on work by not being aggressive enough, but not today. As soon as work arrives, he makes it known that he is a hard worker with strong arms. It's a sad reality when we realize that his fathers words were not only true of his homeland, but of society in general. "To the rich, a peasant is just a pair of strong arms."

Enrique finds himself at a construction site shoveling dirt on a hot, sunny day, contemplating going back to Guatemala. He thinks of his beautiful homeland and the simple life that he lived. This was a place of family and community, of hard work and working for what you need, not what you want. Then he snaps back and is in an American consruction yard holding a shovel. As he resumes his digging, he has a flashback of
[Show spoiler]his father's head hanging in a tree.
We don't even need a final shot to let us know what his decision was. He'll take his chances in El Norte.

I really enjoyed this film. The direction was great, as was the cinematography (some great shots of the city as well as the Mexican and Guatemalan landscapes) and most of all, the two main actors were wonderful! Their performances were so captivating, effortlessly playing such naive, innocent and endearing characters. Highly recommend this one
!
Good movie. Helps to see things from a different perspective sometimes.

I did watch the bonus material. Its evident that you didnt understand it.

I believe that mental illness is a scientific reality.

I dont believe Lust Demons and Possession exist.

Dafoe clearly stated that the final scene "Meant nothing, and Lars would tell you the same thing".

People often see what they want to see instead of accepting "what is". In the film, they hiked and camped to a place called Eden. Is that a biblical reference? Or is it simply the fact that they lived in Seattle and a nearby camping/hiking/tourist forest is called Eden by the sea?

Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction, or religion.

Moon

Storyline IMDb:
Sam Bell has a three year contract to work for Lunar Industries. For the contract's entire duration, he is the sole employee based at their lunar station. His primary job responsibility is to harvest and periodically rocket back to Earth supplies of helium-3, the current clean and abundant fuel used on Earth. There is no direct communication link available between the lunar station and Earth, so his only direct real-time interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer whose function is to attend to his day to day needs. With such little human contact and all of it indirect, he feels that three years is far too long to be so isolated; he knows he is beginning to hallucinate as the end of his three years approaches. All he wants is to return to Earth to be with his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who was born just prior to his leaving for this job. With two weeks to go, he gets into an accident at one of the mechanical harvesters and is rendered unconscious....

My Take:
My second time watching this movie was better than the first. I had to write a review! This movie is mesmerizing! On my first viewing, I had no idea it would go in the direction it went in
[Show spoiler]Cloning
and it was an awesome twist for me. On this second viewing, I was able to really take in the story and acting much better and I came away even more impressed than before. Sam Rockwell is unbelieveble in this one. It is hard to believe that he is
[Show spoiler]the sole character (a few TV monitor characters and Kevin Spacey's voice, but that doesn't count). His delivery and interaction with himself is fantastic. He was able to modify his performance perfectly to play the multiple roles he plays. I dare you to not be awestruck at the Ping Pong scene Just truly amazing not just because of the technical aspects of how they did it, but more because of how he times the scene perfectly and makes you really believe that there are two of him in the scene!
. Clint Mansell's music is another character in this movie - I didn't know at first, that he is the same composer of The Fountain, which is one of my favorite movies to date. This movie had me captivated and left me with a sense of sadness, anger and hope all at once! A movie that can do this is truly special!

A must see!

Just because YOU dont believe it doesnt mean that the film didnt intend on meaning it. You just dont believe in religion and it clouds your judgement of the film. I believe in both science and GOD. This film is the exact mixture.
