My Criterion flash sale order arrived. Yay!
Watched For All Mankind earlier on. A little dry perhaps, but the footage looks pretty good and I did get a kick out of watching the astronauts doing their thing. As cool as the shuttle launches and technical aspects are, it's good to see that they all have a sense of humor too. I think the film does show a human side to the space program I don't usually see, and the more I think about it the more I like it. Watching The Graduate now. I always did appreciate it as a film/story, and the new Blu-Ray looks/sounds decent. There are some neat thematic details I never noticed before. Also, maybe it's just me, but the opening shot with the guy on the escalator reminds me so much of the opening for Jackie Brown. Will get to my third one, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold when I'm feeling more with-it. |

Lady Snowblood is pretty hip, especially if you're a Kill Bill fan (or, I'd say it's on the same level as Shogun Assassin). Kuroneko is quite different from the rest -- more of a dreamy, folky ghost story. It is a good one though. |

Have you seen Mulholland Drive? It's not a horror film like Rosemary's Baby per se, and it's not in the vein of Halloween or anything like that, but it's definitely inherently creepy and foreboding. I recommend it to fans of horror because it does essentially fit the criteria for a "horror" film, it's just an unconventional one. Sort of like Under the Skin. Another recommendation is Robert Altman's 3 Women... again, not really a conventional horror film, but a very eerie exercise indeed.

Nashville and McCabe I already love. Popeye will always have a special place in my childhood heart (RIP Robin Williams). ...3 Women may be next. |

I never see much talk about Black Orpheus and since there is a sale going on just wanted to give a recommendation for anyone on the fence.
This film really got me by surprise the first time I saw it and it is one of those where the music is so good that it gave me one of those special experiences where to this day just by hearing the music my brain goes back to a specific memory of feelings from when I first saw it, not sure if I can explain it well. While most if not all performers are amateur I hardly even noticed or else it hardly matters in this, they all show some great dance moves at the least. I watched this before Orpheus and I couldn't get much into that (to be fair I have never been able to connect much with Cocteau work), it's funny how two french directors conceived such different adaptations with the same source material although this is a much looser one. Also I have never read about a Brazilian point of view of this film, so I can't be sure how accurate the culture is portrayed as I know a foreign perspective doesn't always lend well to make an authentic picture. Anyway for me this is just a powerful tragic story that in it's darkest aspects is very atmospheric and told with an amazing soundtrack that will be forever ingrained in my mind, I mean not for nothing at the time it bested such films as Nazarin, 400 Blows, Hiroshima mon Amour for the Palme d'or, and Criterion's own The Bridge at the Oscars, even though I can see how in this day many see it as an injustice due to some of those films being much more popular or influential. |
