The fact that neither Garden State nor Leon: The Professional nor Black Swan nor The Other Boleyn Girl nor V For Vendetta nor Closer ... the fact that none of them were directed by George Lucas might have something to do with it.

Thor is a great movie. Portman is easily the worst part, though. Is she distractingly terrible? Nah, but Marvel cast her because they wanted a "name." You could get away with casting a nobody (at the time) in the main role when you have him opposite Natalie Portman, and you have a pedigree name like Anthony Hopkins among the cast.

It was one of Marvel's rare casting failures. By Thor: The Dark World, she was pouting because Patty Jenkins didn't end up directing it, and - while I like the movie - it's not as good as the first. You can tell she doesn't give a shit about being in that movie. To make it worse, her role is even bigger in this one. There's like a five minute scene at the beginning where she's on a date with some goober, and it honestly feels like the editor accidentally spliced in a scene from some romantic comedy. Portman's role was probably enlarged at her request, and she still couldn't be bothered to actually try.

You'd think someone who did "Your Highness" wouldn't hold that attitude when she's part of a Marvel franchise, but she has an Oscar now, so what does she care?

I love George Lucas, but his direction and scripting in the prequels plus Natalie Portman's "I'm too good for this Star Wars garbage" attitude = poor performance.

Sorry, but as I remember it, they could have resurrected Rita Hayworth at her prime, and it wouldn't have made a bit of difference. Who's going to be able to deliver those lines? Or even respond to .... to what?

Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee, and plenty of others managed to give good performances despite the directing and the writing. I know Portman isn't on their level, obviously, but she's touted as such a fantastic actress that you think she'd be able to overcome the flawed directing and scripting.

Oh, well. The past is the past. I think Daisy Ridley is going to show her up and will be a fantastic heroine for the new trilogy.

Yeah but then Rita Hayworth would be alive again, so really we all win.

I don't remember those performances as being very impressive, really. But as you say, the past is the past.

What's interesting about that particular Padme costume in that particular state is that it highlights how deep Lucas was into all his symbolism and whatnot. No sooner had she pledged her love to Anakin, consummated with a kiss, that her virginal white outfit was slashed to reveal a fair bit of skin, i.e. she's now in this more sexualised version of the costume for having given in to her desires.

There's loads of stuff like that dotted throughout the prequels, the trouble is that the movies can't survive on metaphors and symbolism alone. For Star Wars to work, for it to overcome the inherent silliness of it all, you need characters that are vital enough and zesty enough to carry you along and to make you forget about the daft dialogue or giant plot holes. A lean, propulsive narrative will also achieve much the same thing, so I hope JJ's got all the bases covered with Ep VII.

Great, I just wished Luke's mother a happy birthday and we return to prequel "discussion" again. Even Natalie Portman got some hit this time.

(I like the prequels). We can only talk about Threepio's red arm for so long.

Well, we can change the subject.

Since she was brought up, this Daisy Ridley chick, I don't know anything about her. Looked her up on IMDB, and this appears to be her first feature. She's cute, and looks a bit like Keira Knightley sometimes. That's a plus.

Rey sure looks more like her grandparents to me. Still I don't know why her parents would abandon her, or something happened during her infant time that separated them? The Skywalker kids sure don't have proper upbringing by their parents.

No, they don't appear to.

That explains a lot, actually.

"I’m not sure how much I can say. I guess because I’ve said that I’m solitary, and that’s how I begin, that is probably a big clue as to what… (Kathleen Kennedy nervously chuckles) … it is."

Are we going to get any clarity about what happened to Wicket after Return of the Jedi? Does he stay on Endor or does he explore the galaxy? I hope the sequels answers these questions.

Wicket died with the rest of the Ewoks when debris from the Death Star poisoned Endor's atmosphere.

I thought he helped raise a little girl and ate oatmeal with Wilford Brimley.
