Yeah I definitely agree with the part about being no less of a cinephile. We all love movies or we wouldn't be here. I work with a huge movie fan at work that just bought a 32" flat screen after all these years and watches DVD and VHS. The format you watch a movie on doesn't determine how much of a fan you are. There are too many stuck up people out there who look down on the way you want to enjoy a movie.

I prefer Blu-Ray for all of the above mentioned reasons but when I am on the couch and trying to figure out what to watch it is awful convenient to surf for movies using the remote. I have several hundred digital copies along with Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon and about 300 Blu-Ray's. I don't think it has to be a one or the other decision. I'm happy to have both options available to me.

I'm contemplating selling most of my bluray and Steelbook collection and just going all in for UV. I've got 152 movies on Vudu and a couple on iTunes.

Do you guys prefer UV or iTunes?

So, if there is no real desire to collect, why the UV redemption? Why not just rent?

I believe you would be making a big mistake for reasons I have already stated.

You say that now but you will probably give in to convenience completely soon. At the expense of higher quality.

Movies are cheaper on Digital and renting is actually what I currently do for a lot of movies. If the movie amazes me, I'll think about buying it. The problem is I have a lot of movies I bought because they were on Steelbook or I thought I would watch them again. They are collecting dust.

I don't collect movies to have movies. I only keep what I love the most.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having your favorite movies on disc and movies you like in Digital. Less shelf space, less clutter, and download to watch while traveling.

I'm currently replacing my favorite movies on bluray with the 4k versions. I like a thinner movie collection.

I actually won't, I will always have physical copies. I've been collecting DVD/BR since 1998 when I bought my first DVD player. Before that I just rented VHS tapes. I always want hard copies of my favorite films but I am not opposed owning digital copies of films that I would not normally collect. I also like the convenience of having some good films when I travel.

All I am saying is that I think there is room for both mediums at least in my life.

But some titles are not getting a Bluray release and instead getting released on Digital HD How is that a 'everyone wins' scenario?

Is it a win if the company puts the movie out on disc, no one buys it, and they lose money and then don't release any more movies?

Digital is cheaper than making discs.

There is that word again. 'Cheaper'. it cheapens the home cinema experience not having a Bluray of a film. How do the companies know no one will buy it if they don't release it? Sad sad times for purists this! It's going to get worse as well.

The constant message that seem to come through from fans of Digital, and even those that sit on the fence is we don't particular care about PQ, or the work that has been put into many of the physical releases, just as long as we have a film collection (because I am a film fan ??)
The death knell IMO for physical media is sounding loud and clear and unfortunately many of those posting here do not care one way or another......they really are the ones loosing out in the end............sad times.

Who says digital is always easy? My wife and I wanted to watch Anabelle before The Conjuring 2 comes out, and guess what? It's not on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu or HBO Go. I ended up purchasing it from Amazon in HD. I was surprised that a recent movie that's related to a big theatrical release is practically non-existent digitally.

Not sure what that says or means, but I thought it was interesting to share.

Reminded me of when I used to drive all over town looking for a specific version of a movie in stores, only I didn't spend any gas in this case.

Back to being more on topic I guess.

Obviously it's cheaper for the studios to go digital, but as long as there's a market for physical and they can recoup their investment in most of their physical releases, we won't see an all-digital future. Like I said before, I don't like renting, so I'd also hate a future that is all about subscriptions and rentals. I like being able to revisit movies whenever I want. I watch movies on all the different HD formats, so I don't discriminate. I'm all about my movies!

Now you're playing silly word games. How is it a bad thing if digital makes movie distribution less expensive?

Digital can make it economically feasible to distribute titles that would never be profitable on Blu-ray. For example, the iTunes store has a whole section of indie and foreign movies, most of which will never be released on Blu-ray. That can only be good for movie "purists".
