Eh, certainly one of my favorite movies but I'm satisfied with the '09 Blu (steel) and original DVD for uncut theatrical release cut. Of course I'll be interested in feedback on the UHD here..

Are you excited that there's another Disney release cause it means there's hope in the future?

Eh, it’s hard to mourn the loss of something that we barely had in the first place so of coursh I jumped on that bandwagon. Disnee despise non-franchise live action catalogue content on UHD and we’re very lucky to have gotten the tiny amount of stuff that we have had, it’s absolutely pathetic compared to any other major. If Disnee were going to quit releasing live action catalogue UHDs (again) tomorrow, would anyone actually notice?

Yet when they do release something it often gets met with an exceedingly bleh response, like yours to Heat for example, plus the entirely deserved bashing that POTC got. If I were at Disnee I’d be wondering why I was bothering with catalogue UHD too, but perhaps it’s become a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point: release mediocre stuff and you have all the justification you need for not bothering.

I’m the last person to be labeled a conspiracy theorist but I honestly suspect there may be something to this. You’re a studio that wants iron-clad control of your content exclusively through your own pay-to-play portal, but there are just enough physical media lovers out there that you can’t deny yourself a cut of the revenue they bring, so how do you address the quandary? Make the physical media releases so unappealing, the fans give up their affection for the format and adopt your pay-to-play portal instead.

yes its true that Disney plus had the Imax scenes. the original switching aspect ratio are on the 3d version of the movies. not all of them.. some like dr strange, captain america 3, guardians of the galaxy 1 and 2.

They can have their cake and eat it too with physical media and UHD by supporting new releases - as they have done since Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in 2017, albeit with some titles decided on a country by country basis - which have always been the biggest money-maker and not bothering with the catalogue stuff. Conversely, Disnee have been falling over themselves to release animated catalogue content on UHD these past few years, especially anything CG animated from the last 25 years (while the Old 2D hand-painted classics are left on the shelf, mostly). There's a massive discord there between how they regard animation and live action.

But yeah, when you look at the lack of expenditure like no Dobly Vision, no 100GB discs, no IMAX scenes on UHD disc (though no other major has bothered with actual IMAX Enhanced branded discs apart from Sony and even those didn't embiggen, seems like Sony has quietly swept IE discs under the rug since then and have reverted to Dobly as the main USP) it does make it hard to believe that Disnee care a fig about giving UHD disc buyers the highest quality experience. Though the irony is that their compression is fantastic!

They're a business and not a charidee, that much is true, but if they were to start releasing more Old Live Action Movies on UHD and added in remastered Blus (for ALL territories, not just the US), Dobly, OG audio, retained existing extra features etc then they might find that catalogue sales would be worth a damn. Who knew?

He never said they wouldn't. It's just that Disney's catalog output of 20th Century Fox and other owned properties would be severely curtailed... and guess what? It has been.

It always has been since Disnee first got involved with UHD, that's the point I've been making since minute one. And not just Fox stuff but their own Old Live Action Movies too, I think I'm right in saying that they've released just as much Fox gear as they have Disnee joints on UHD these last couple of years: Speed and Home Alone versus Unbreakable and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And even that's more than I ever thought we'd get, which is why I started crowing immediately when SB0870 said that Disnee were going to halt UHD catalogue stuff.

Does Disney even deserve the credit for this happening, or is this release more a case of Regency, which owns Heat, pushing to get a UHD out there? Regency's distribution deal has been with FoxDisney after being with Warner for a long time. I don't know how their deal is set up but it's not like Heat is even a "Disney movie", they're just the home video distributor at the present time.

That said, I'm glad the 4K is finally happening. Apart from some James Cameron films, I don't recall another title with this much lingering anticipation from forum users here. Hopefully the transfer is competent and lives up to expectations.
