Warners love to put loads of audio tracks on their discs BUT they don't usually put a lot of lossless ones on there, most of the time the other languages are DD 5.1 @ 640 kb/s. In recent years though they've started doing versions exclusive to France and Germany with localised Atmos mixes (they did a German-only pressing of Fury Road on BD, for example), and going a little further back they did different versions of some 3D discs to include lossless DTS-HD audio for certain territories.

So you don't often see multiple-language Atmos support from the majors even in the age of the 'one size' disc because too many of those tracks will take up too much space, e.g. for the same amount of room as a single 5 Mb/s Atmos track you could have like eight different 640 kb/s DD 5.1 tracks.

But they don't change the video encode so something has to give, therefore they reduce the quality of the main English track to make room for the local French/German/whatever Atmos tracks. When Warners released Sully in the UK the BD that they pressed was actually the French version, so the French Atmos track is lossless while the English Atmos is lossy DD+!

Ohh ok, I misunderstood. Thought he meant the French and German discs were getting English-language DD+ tracks. The French and German tracks being lossy makes more sense (though still a dumb decision, as if those countries don't deserve lossless audio in their native languages).

To make things easier:

English (Dolby Atmos / Dolby Digital Plus 7.1)
German (Dolby Atmos / Dolby TrueHD)
French (Dolby Atmos / Dolby TrueHD)

Pretty stupid heah.

The Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 core is really weak I remember from Aquaman (2018). Only bought that disc for the Digbook.

Yeah I put up the specs for the Aquaman French 4K + 3D steel in one thread or another but I can't find it at all, that's another with the audio all over the place as you say.

That's exactly what he meant, I should've emphasised the lossless part more in the top post there.

I'm sure I read that the object audios had provisions for multiple language streams (in a much less crude way than this) but then I was sure I read the same for dvd many years ago.

Default Different UPC Codes

I apologize if this has been discussed, but I’ve searched the thread and don’t seem to be able to find this topic.

I purchased the Joker 4K and when I went to add it to my Blu-Ray.com library TE UPC was not recognized. The UPC listed here is 00883929697656. The UPC on my copy is 00883929699254. The packaging is identical out side of the UPC code. There’s no foreign markings or French text to indicate Canadian or European or Asian regional distribution.

Every UPC Code database I search says the UPC code doesn’t exists. *♂️

Has anyone else seen this??

Thanks!

The one you have (00883929699254) is a Walmart exclusive. For unknown reasons, Walmart has their own exclusive UPC number that is slightly different from retail version for 99.8% of their Warner Brothers release. The only ones I've come across in 7 years of collecting that weren't different at Walmart was Crazy Rich Asians 4K and The Nun 4K.

If you search for "Joker 4K blu-ray" on eBay, you'll see 2 different UPC version that most people don't specify. The ones that have the blue sticker that says "Digital Movie Code Included" and "Watch instantly" is indicative of VUDU InstaWatch that is included with the purchase from Walmart. If some of those listings have photo of the back, it will match your UPC number like these:

I recently picked this title up and just finished watching the BD out of the 4K set. I watched on our non-4K backup system, so I'm not going to comment on PQ or AQ, although it played perfectly fine on this system. Based on my reading prior to buying, I knew this wasn't going to be a slam-bang batman film I thoroughly enjoyed it! The character development and sequence of events may have been somewhat predictable, but they were presented in a superb fashion and I was very impressed with Joaquin Phoenix's performance. Highly recommended as long as you know you are not going to sit down for a DC comics action film.

Yes! Ashamed to admit I've never seen this, but the book is a favorite. Will wait a little longer to watch it in 4K.

Sorry to bring this up again but I somehow missed this and I’m fascinated. So for WB, the Panavision 65 is for Nolan and only Nolan to use? I don’t understand. I understand it’s costly but it’s already a big movie. They couldn’t have chipped in for the 65mm? And why not use the Arri 65 cameras?

If they only have a certain amount of cameras and Nolan is using them, then there’s no cameras to use. They did use ARRI 65 cameras.

I assumed Panavision made more. Guess it makes sense they didn't.

One of the top 5 movies of 2019 along with The Irishman, Knives Out, Parasite and 1917 imo. I’ve been a fan of Joaquin since I saw him as Commodus so I had high expectations for this. I had been hoping for this type of vision instead of the typical action based superohero movie.

I used to love action movies as a kid but today they put me to sleep. For others a character study without quick cuts every couple of seconds is more effective than taking an Ambien. I thank Warner for the relatively small budget. Maybe if Phillips had $300 million to work with he would’ve made a conventional comic book movie.

The transfer itself is fantastic. Definitely one of 2019’s best. You can almost always tell when what you’re watching is native 4K. Especially when a large format is used. 35mm done right looks great but 65/70mm really shows off the UHD format nothing else. I can only imagine what these films look like in native 8K. When microLED goes mainstream it will actually be like having a home theater for real.

While Joaquin isn’t the kind of actor to waste his talent doing sequels, due to the financial success I believe a sequel is inevitable. The ending certainly left me wanting to see what happens next. There are so many possibilities that can be explored. Maybe even crossing paths with Batman again. The problem with that is that it wouldn’t be Bale but Pattinson.

I think Pattinson’s recent work has gone a long way towards getting rid of being knows as the guy from Twilight but I don’t think he’s the right guy for the role. In the 90s it was the same with Val Kilmer. Great actor always exciting to watch in the right role (Heat, The Doors, Top Gun) but he was just a terrible Batman. Clooney even worse. I hope I’m wrong! Maybe Pattinson will surprise us all.

You know this was shot digitally right? It was the 'large format' Alexa 65 (which is 6.5K in Open Gate mode, not 8K), but not actually on fillum.

I read somewhere, likely in this thread, that Phoenix and Phillips both signed on for a sequel.
Once it became the blockbuster that it did, the studio was probably throwing large bags of money at them and they couldn't say no.
Can't say that I blame them.
