Watched the first episode yesterday also. Don't know if it was because I was tired or something else, but I did not really got excited about it. My wife even stopped watching altogether after 20-25 minutes or so.

Boy oh boy! Talk about a let down after such a good 1-2 punch from last week.
[Show spoiler]I have no idea why they used zombies in this episode. It wasn't needed and felt superfluous to any emotional beats they were trying to sell between characters. There were some good moments such as between Ortegas and Una, Pike and Batel, & it was a somewhat interesting scene involving the Vulcan Mind Meld. That was about it.

I'm patient so I'll wait to see where they take Ortegas, but right now it feels tacked on as the writers aren't quite sure what to do with her character. It's almost veering into that 'giving them something to do' territory. Hopefully they make it worthwhile in the end.

Next week's episode I hope we get to do some exploring and get to encounter something new.
As for this week sadly it's a 4 out of 10.

It seems like they resolved one character's trauma and simply transferred it to the character they've done the least with.

Nope. Just resolving last season's Gorn cliff-hanger and repositioning the status-quo, with a small time-jump. The next episode is another filler, a murder-mystery that takes place on a prototype Holodeck and focuses on the security chief. After that, we get some sort of time-travel episode, then some other fillers with no apparent course being followed, and the season finale has a title that seems to reference a First Contact situation. Overall, there's nothing that suggests any real course for the season beyond the "personal stuff" and "character development" that goes from episode to episode.

It's nice to get a live-action Trek show that gives us largely standalones again! I liked Discovery, really, but it's not one I really fancy rewatching anytime soon just for fun... The arcs were just too damn overpowering of everything else.

Picard is similar to me. I liked that too, but it's an entire season for 1 story.

Enterprise got the balance right when it came to arcs IMO. Even season 3 gave us plenty of standalones in a larger arc. The bastard child of the Berman-era is aging well as it turns out.

I thought episode 3 was a little lesser, but it was a masterclass in juggling three different stories and giving them all a good amout of weight. They also managed to interconnect them intelligently. I'm delighted that Ortegas is finally getting a spotlight, and with a strong character story.

But... zombies. No thanks. I get bored of them even when they're done well, which they weren't here.

The new season is off to a near-perfect start!

I don’t think they really should have split the ending of the previous season to end that one with a cliffhanger - watching both parts at once could have worked really well.

But
[Show spoiler]zombies
in Star Trek is fun and can’t wait to see what happens with
[Show spoiler]Ortega
. It’s gonna be a wild ride!

I suspect that any "Big Bad" is going to be showing up at the end of the next season and then be the sole focus of the final season's six episode run. Unfortunately, we presently have no idea if that Sybok tease from last season will ever pay off in a terrorist story for that final run, but who knows. There's also some chitty-chatter about a follow-up TOS series, possibly built on Kirk's early days in the Enterprise command chair, which he's expected to begin in the final season.

The weakest part of Episode 3 was the A-story. The rest was great.

Seems like they’re doing an entire episode with muppets?

Looks like they got his hair right!

It's funny that you should say that, because they are in-fact, Muppets. Yes, you see that being used correctly. The episode is a team-up with Jim Henson Studios and is being directed by one of their team.

Good god, Paramount have lost it!

This show is becoming absolutely ridiculous, I have watched S1 and S2 and the first 3 of S3. They waste so much air time on nothing, they dont have 23 episodes they have 10 and the mind just boggles how much lame crap the fill up these episodes with.

I think I like 2 episodes of S1-S3 so far.

I love how the show can be serious one week and wacky the next. Y’know like the original Star Trek series. I just wish it was getting a few more episodes in it’s final season.

Episode 3 was good. Some technical issues:

[Show spoiler]Even if they are zombies, they still have to have electrical impulses to the brain. Taking the "no life forms" a little too literally there.

TOS already had the ability to filter things out using the transporter. I don't know why that isn't even discussed here.

Ortega didn't deserve this. At all.

Also, I thought that a better use of her skill would be to nudge a large asteroid and ride its erratic path, hiding behind the asteroid. THAT would have been impressive. Instead, she nudges the speed to 0.6 impulse and gets herself in trouble. Why? She's a really good character. There better be a good payoff for this.
