I’ve had decent success putting stuff in my cart at DD and periodically checking if anything updated to “In stock”. That’s what alerted me to something becoming available again at Pop Market recently. It doesn’t seem to work on everything though, including the movie you’re interested in.

Duh. I knew sooner or later someone would jump onto my post and contention and snob all over it with intimations that DVD is from the stone age and now only 4K matters. But not for me, no matter how convincing the arguments against it are, I still enjoy watching DVDs and I still can find quality presentations from them on my setup, which includes an 85 inch screen. But if the 4K acolytes feel better putting down the ancient technology and speak condescendingly to those who still appreciate it, go ahead and do it.

It won't stop me from watching my DVDs of rare titles that will never make it to Blu, much less 4K, and having a good time doing so. I'm not a pixel counter, just someone who likes to watch films and appreciate and study them for their content and not just their appearance or the caliber of reproduction. Sure, technology changes and improves, no one is arguing against that, but I won't have standards superciliously imposed upon me when I can still discover pleasure in formats that are not dead to me.

Hear, hear. I'm often quite surprised by the quality of some of my DVDs after they've been upscaled. Older classic Hollywood films, especially, can look pretty decent, as can the later Criterion discs (I couldn't believe how good my DVDs of All That Jazz and Until the End of the World looked on a friend's 65-inch screen). Is it ideal? No. And certainly there are plenty of older DVDs that look terrible. But as the Professor stated, often we have no other choice--or it's prohibitively expensive--so we take our pleasure where we can. And ultimately it's about the movies themselves. Would I love to have a Blu-ray of Pennies from Heaven? Hell, yeah. But that dusty old DVD still looks pretty darn good!

Nothing wrong with watching a DVD, whatever your reasoning is, but you only posted it because you wanted conflict, which was why I mocked your response.

Why do you think I wanted conflict? I didn't. And certainly didn't intend it to be seen that way. Sorry I gave you the wrong impression!

Your initial post saying "according to popular opinion" (or something like that) and the later post about cinephile friends thinking your DVDs were a blu-ray. You even said you knew someone would contend with your post. Anyway, it's ok, forget about it.

It was then poor choices of words as it was not my intention to either undermine or challenge anyone, just maybe put up a bit of premature defense based on other times when I’ve been ridiculed for praising DVDs. I don’t want to belabor it or lead it into the very type of disagreeable discourse I’m trying to avoid so I will take your advice and just forget about it. Thanks for understanding I did not want to elicit conflict or start a fight.

I ordered a newly released CD as part of a 4 item order. They sent 3 of the items pretty quickly. A month passed and I had forgotten they hadn't sent it yet. They sent a cancellation notice. The item still shows as In Stock. Sent an e-mail asking why and this was the response:

We regret to inform you that the item was cancelled because it was unavailable for an extended period of time.

Please note a refund for the item has been processed on your account.

If it's not In Stock, then they should have changed the status.
If it is In Stock, then send the item to me.

I'm glad you still like DVDs, I have some (those discs that I just don't think will ever get an upgrade), but they look terrible compared to Blu-ray quality.

I can't tell much of a difference between Blu & 4K, but I can tell immediately when something is on DVD.

Started collecting some time ago, and I'm not rebuying everything that I have on DVD. I know you're not a HTF fan, but RAH's rant about everything not needing to be in 4K is right up my alley.

For Springsteen fans Tracks 2 (the lost albums) is selling for a little over $243...cheaper than Amazon. I haven't found a cheaper price. Now if I can wait till it's in stock and there is a coupon (assuming it doesn't jump in price)

Keep in mind, if Amazon matches the price AND (it's not yet listed) offer a free MP3 of the box set (which is fairly common), that would be a great deal.

When it comes to upgrading to 4K I find myself gravitating toward "epic" type films renowned for their spectacular cinematography and locations and things like that. I don't think of rom coms or chamber dramas or more low key type of movies that don't really offer any visual cache. I know I know, others will argue with me that EVERY movie benefits from UHD and I won't debate otherwise, and I openly acknowledge that I consider TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD the best 4K disc I've seen to date. But I can't justify double and triple dipping on upgrades of movies that look like they were made for TV with bland sets and backlots and being severely over lit.

Funny enough though, I said the very same things when Blu-rays first appeared and I never stuck to those self-imposed limits, mostly because Blu also represented a quality aspect of the disc itself and its longevity and the idea of a better archival experience than DVD. 4K seems to offer that too, but to me so far not as much as Blu did when it first appeared. In other words, I'm perfectly fine with a library of mostly Blus and some upgrades in 4K and some downgrades in DVD. YMMV.

You're actually able to place an order? I can't get past the shipping address screen on my iPad or Mac with Safari or Chrome. Worked fine a week ago.

I placed an order at 10:42AM with no issues.

Although Long Kiss Goodnight might be backordered, even though it is showing In-Stock. Delivery estimate for that shows May, while everything else in the order shows this weekend.

The coupon still worked on it, regardless if it's in stock or not.
