It's encrypted which is why you can't read it on your PC or PS3. It's stupid if you ask me, not sure why but that's how it is.

Sure, I can understand. But it would be nice to have a little more options when your PS3 does fail. The backup is nice but it's a bit of a hassle. I tried backing up a few times and it was pretty annoying and not very smooth and essentially never got done.

I've never had an issue with a backup. Though the backup doesn't fix everything. I called Sony out on the issue, and they forwarded it to the department, and gave me info and phone number for it, but I haven't had the time to do anything yet. Something needs to be done.

My ps3 on the way out ?

Cleaned it thoroughly, let it sit for a bit, removed the disc and waited. After about 10 mins, it turned off again by itself blinking red light.

I bought an extended warranty for it but I don't want a replacement, I want the same one repaired.

That's interesting. My PS3 died yesterday while my son was playing Racket/Clank. Getting flashing red light as well. It won't turn on....I am bummed but it makes a decision simple New slim is btter option for me than $150 refurb/repair.

PS: Go Leafs

The issues I had were that once I left it on for a good 5 hours and it said something like, cannot perform backup at this time and the next time, after waiting all that time, it said I didn't have enough memory on my external to copy it. I was pissed, at least give me an option to choose another destination or something. Don't make me re-do the whole process over.

ps: I miss my ps3. They told me it would most likely take 2 weeks. Don't know where that guy got 2 months from.

Mine was under the warranty that I purchased with Futureshop so if they can fix it, good

PS: Leafs suck

Will try the Gilksy youtube fix today for my PS3. That guy has VERY detailed vids and a PDF. So, with heat gun in hand and gut in throat, I will disassemble, heat, cross fingers and reassemble (hopefully without any spare parts left over.
What the hell, I can't break it anymore than it already IS.
Worst case..it doesn't work and I get a Slim.

Update: The heat gun repair worked!!! PS3 fired up and asked me to see the time/date. Awesome.
$60 bucks for the gun, 1.5hrs work.

Default BD drive for PS3: How do I know I'm buying the right one?

My PS3 recently stopped reading discs. I put a disc in, and it just sits there and does nothing. I did some Google searches and found that this problem is not uncommon. Looks like I need a new BD drive.

So, I'm looking on eBay now. How do I know I am getting the correct BD drive? Is there a model number or something I need to look for?

Thanks!

^ It is not the Yellow Light of Death. It still boots up just fine. It just won't read discs.

It had a link to this thread, is this your problem? https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=70948 Or is it the whole drive that needs replacing?

I think I'd rather just buy a whole new drive.

It could be a power supply issue, hard to say. Either way, I'd start backing up your information.

Thats exactly what my PS3 did before getting the YLOD, like Mike said backup everything now cause you might not get another chance.

  1. Make a backup of everything
  2. Deactivate all accounts
  3. Format hard drive

Default palystation 3 lens cleaning?

Thanks for posting so much great info here.

I've seen some video tutorials on youtube about how to clean the blu-ray lens in a playstation 3. Basically take it apart and use a cotton swab and some cleaning solution on the lens.

1. Has anyone here tried this?
2. Any sugguestions about what cleaning solution to use? I tried radio shack and they didn't have anything that looked appropriate.
3. Am I insane to touch the lens at all?

I just bought a used 40GB. It's out of warranty (I checked with Sony). Anyway, it played fine for the first three days, but now it keeps freezing up. It plays DVD/CD fine, but games aren't working (I tried two different games). It's really clean inside from looking in the vents. I tried the fan-blow-out function but it didn't help.

Thanks for any feedback.
