The point is, I’m not belaboring the fact that I’m happy with it. I concede that not all will be, and that’s totally okay. I’m not saying that those who disagree are stupid or that my opinion is the only valid one worth stating. But once you’ve voiced concerns, and let everyone know, and gone on about the same things for page after page, at a certain point, it just gets tiresome. It comes across eventually as you ragging on everyone who chooses to enjoy it as being somehow beneath your oh so superior opinion. I’ve never taken that attitude nor will I. I don’t say “so don’t buy it” as a dismissive. As the NTI’s might say, “it’s just a suggestion”.

Default The Abuse: Googly Eyes Edition

There's still loads of blue in the new transfer, there's just lots of cyan too.

All told, I rather enjoyed the 4K HDR theatrical stream. The goodness outweighs the bad and although I'm not ULTRA grateful to be given any old shit (because I've been watching the previous theatrical remaster for a few years now, as well as Crowe's wonderful SEHD) I'm still pleased with it overall. Their eyeses really do look super weird but I guess that's a small price to pay. And the CG shots of the pseudopod look amazing for what they are, likely 1K images optically composited (bar one shot, you can actually see the matte lines now!), they hold up superbly.

The wide shot of the NTI Ark at the end which folks mentioned in the SE screening on the 6th still looks like boiled ass mind you, DP Mikael Salomon mentioned something about it in that interview which someone linked to, that it looked terrible so Cameron put a load of "diffusion" on it at the time.

And then follows it up with an A for image quality.

This is the correct explanation. Remember that despite AI borking things, this is from a 4k scan, so of course there's going to be detail revealed we haven't seen before.

And you can see a hint of those lines in previous versions, just not well-defined.

Nope. Look at her fake AI-interpreted eye (what a neural network thinks a human eye is supposed to look like). The cornea is way too big now. Also, the tell tale thicker strands of her. Jamie Lee would've killed to have hair like that.

so its exactly what I thought it was. And our fav love-him-or-hate-him BH is carrying water for them. Why not call it what it is? a 4k upscale that can be hit or miss, looks mostly miss. I believe the Abyss was rescanned from the negative. True Lies? Seen nothing yet to lend credence to that. They never even talked about that over the years. It was just "oh btw you know how you were all waiting for the Abyss? Turns out in that time we also rescanned Aliens AND True Lies! Surprise!". I'm skeptical they did. IF they did.. then Park Road ruined it.
I'll be honest here..always had a HUGE crush on Jamie Lee. When I heard the 4k was finally coming, I was anticipating being able to see details (in the famous stripperpole scene) like skin pores and even light forearm hair that we've never seen before.
What we got (thus far) is an over-DNR'd waxy, AI mess.

.and here's the new "Park Road™ optimized" cover:

^^Ok, that one was a joke

I'm starting to think Cameron made these films good enough for the averge consumer to buy 'em, but bad enough to annoy the sh*t out of the biggest fans. Maybe I'm being too cynical, but such people really exist. There are people that need others to be angry in order to feel alive.

That's just paranoia now For some reason, Jimmy wants the films to look modern. I feel the discs will still look vastly better but it is frustrating.

I wonder if Cameron retouched it this time around.

There is a scene in the first 30 mins where the black crane lady grabs something with the crane under water and you can tell its animated. It looks like stop frame animation. I was surprised of this because the effects elsewhere are top notch.

I can't stand his "walking on eggshels" reviews and that comment about the meticulous process...

looks like amazon just updated their page for the extended version and is now offering it in 4K HDR. you just have to search "the abyss special edition" and then select prime video, or else only the theatrical cut shows.
