Well, for me the newer "correct" slipcover is just that... correct. These second-run slipcovers are "perfect," in my opinion, when everything is inside.

Well, I'm sure Jon will get around to you, eventually. I've never known Criterion to ignore their customer's e-mails.

That's sad, you're missing out! And all just because it's in 4:3. Have you no shame?

There's enough "space" stuff out there in 16:9, so no need for me to get it. Might give it a rental sometime.

It was an extraordinary dvd. Well worth a thorough looksee. The booklet was jam-packed as well, so would suggest checking out the whole thing. (Only problem I had is one of the extras was 45 min (I think) of Mishima giving a talk somewhere, never quite managed to get very far through that.)

My opinion, after having watched it a few years ago, is that a rental is probably not too unreasonable. Perhaps the blu version would bump that up somewhat, but I don't see it as particularly essential. Still going to get it though, see if I change my mind the second time around.

I just watched it last night.

I'll give Reinert his due, he did uncover some amazing footage that I had never seen before (e.g. Ed White's spacewalk), but I personally didn't like the structure of the documentary.

He's clear he wanted to present all the moon missions as one mission with many takes. But, to me it's another example of the dramatic license he took with the movie Apollo 13, which to uber-geeks like me was an endless series of jarring disconnects.

I think Hank's From Earth to the Moon remains the best thing done about the US manned space program. I sure would love to see a series with the same care applied to the Russian space program. That is something we know almost nothing about. And it is a story that is long overdue to be told.

Even if it was a failure, wouldn't you love to see an HD recreation of an N-1 launch?

Gary

P.S. In August, Man on the Moon with Walter Cronkite comes out.

Awaiting "For all mankind" right now, actually really looking forward to it after reading all the debate here. (Though the aspect ratio complaint are really without any warrent. It's Criterion, they present the films as they were originally presented!) May have to check out "Man on the Moon" next month too.

I'd like to see "From the Earth to the Moon" come out too, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Also, and this is completely off subject, I'd really love to see Ken Burn's Baseball come out on Blu.If Criterion could somehow wrangle the rights from PBS that would be even sweeter! Maybe a joint venture like they did with Paramount for Ben Button.

That's a pretty big difference, I'd say.

The same thing happened with Criterion's dvd release of Eric Rohmer's 6 Moral Tales box set... the box that housed the 6 discs was too big. They did the same thing and sent out replacements to those who emailed them.

Just received my replacement slip-cover for 'Last Year...' from Criterion.

Jon said he would ship it out same day (Thursday) and he must have b/c I got it on Saturday.

It fits perfectly, no trouble at all!

Good afternoon,

I would like to confirm that Repulsion arrives with a clear white case (not a digipack).

I'm curious - how do the DVD versions compare to the Blu-Ray versions of the Criterion discs ? Is it really worth it for me to double-dip ? (as all my criterions' are DVDs)

Looks like Robert Harris posted his thoughts on the New Criterion BD of REPULSION

You can usually get a pretty good idea via dvdbeaver. They provide comparision screen snaps of many blu-rays vs dvds, Criterions included.

My copy of Marienbad was pretty tight, but once i got the slipcover off i simply creased all four corners several times to "loosen" it up and now it slides in and out perfectly.
