Well, Rip Van Winkle, did you awaken to find yourself in the dark?

Fear spreads like a wind whipped wildfire around here; you have to maintain a constant vigilance.

To be fair, it’s a fair question. If solar panels are useless when the sun goes down, so too is the tv! Like you guys say, batteries and grid reliance are two potential solutions.

To be fair, I was making a joke. A joke directed at the rash of various types of fear mongering appearing on these forums.

Power is always a concern, but I think a bigger problem will be Bandwidth. With all the Big Boys jumping on the Streaming Bandwagon no one is paying attention to Bandwidth.

https://www.rapidtvnews.com/20190418...#axzz5lQrDzJaa

I have said this for years that Gigabit FTTH will be needed. Netflix low published Bitrates just reinforces the thinking that 10-15Mbps is all that is needed. I feel like in reality it's more like 50+Mbps for good UHD Streaming.

Well, I know that I have never discussed the limitations of my ISP, or that of ISPs in general, in this thread.

Would you like me to start? I bet flyry would like it if I did.

If electricity ever stops working at night methinks we're going to have bigger things to worry about than whether or not our TVs will work.

And I don't want there to be any hard feelings down the road so I want to make this clear now: should that type of dystopian future come to pass I will eat you.

I won't hunt you for your flesh or anything but if all our corporate overlords can come up with is Soylent Green, well, waste not want not.

I know, I was just saying it is a serious question. It’s a very uncertain future we are facing. On top of what I said earlier, don’t be surprised if non essential household appliances like TV sets, music systems, washers suddenly have 20-40% tax added to them. Anything that is deemed environmentally unfriendly. Already here, the talk is of taxing red meat by 20% and processed meat by 40% because if climate change. The government are going to have a lot of fun with this.

You are defining "non-essential" differently than I ever would.

You can always rely upon the government to raise taxes and to create entirely new ones, but even the most apathetic members of our respective democracies will only put up with it so far. Politicians value their career survival, after all, and excessive taxes displease voters.

Don’t get me wrong, tv is absolutely essential to me. If I didn’t have films, I would be over the bridge.

It’s going to be a lot of fun the next 20 years. Less burgers, less pizza, less dairy product, more plants.

Buy less products for the home.

Gee, can’t wait.

If I get 20 more years, I will be thrilled. I expect there will be far more good to come than bad. The future does not scare me; it excites me!

No one, and I mean no one, is taking my pizza!

Do you see the irony of you saying that? I won't belabor the point as I do appreciate irony.

If by digital you mean purchasing downloads then no, I'm still a physical media guy. But I've been ripping my blu-rays for a couple years and playing them off a 2T HDD on my PS4. Although it was never the best experience. Literally just a list of titles.

Once I filled that drive up I went and bought a bigger hard drive, only to discover the PS4 doesn't support anything bigger than 2TB for external media. Strange.

That's when I went looking for a different solution and found Plex. I've heard of it for a while now but never really looked into it until a couple months ago. Wish I would have years ago because it's super simple and works great. I've got a Roku TV so I literally don't even have to switch to my PS4 anymore. Which means not having to wait for that to start up or switch over the stereo receiver. None of that was a big deal but they were still extra steps I had to take I don't anymore.

It's pretty rare I even touch my physical discs anymore once they're on Plex. There's not really any point. I should probably just box them up and throw them in the attic rather than take up shelf space in my family room. But I haven't.
The only discs I still play are my 4K blu-rays because I don't have a way to rip those yet and I only own five of those anyway, so it hasn't been worth it to upgrade my drive yet. I'm still waiting for the costs of those discs to come down more before I really invest more in that format. Regular blu-ray quality is still good enough for me, even on my 4K TV.

If you mean not settling for the best in Quality is Ironic, then I say there are many forms of Quality. To some the very best in Quality is the best equipment calibrated to the nth degree, and to others is their perceived Quality with the best cost effective equipment.

I fail to see how playing 4K Blu-ray on the TV and sound system you already have wouldn't be cost effective.

That’s all good but when the government slap a 20% tax on red meat and processed meat even more, that’s going to hit hard. That affects pizza, burgers, pretty much every takeaway food. In my opinion, our government don’t want us to enjoy ourselves and they also want us to work until we drop so they don’t have to pay pensions as often. They have raised the retirement age to 70 which is a sick sick joke.

I know a good ophthalmologist if you can not see the irony. Beyond that, I said I would not belabor the point and I will not.
