There are over 1 million movies on IMDb. Say 1 out of a 100 are "great" movies, that's 10,000 great movies to discover. Let alone the 2 or 3 out of 100 "pretty good" movies.

I suppose that’s true. I guess I was subconsciously rallying against people who will collect anything cheap or crappy just because they think the size of your collection is its most important feature.

I'll probably be over 1,500 Blu-ray's, not including 4K, by the end of February. I've got 17 coming from Disney Movie Club and plenty of Amazon pre-orders. I didn't think I'd have over 1,000 but studios keep releasing films I love and films I didn't know about as a kid. Still want my Wishlist on Blu-ray as well. I bought a DVD this week which just feels dirty (Tap starring Gregory Hines.)

What’s the best movie you own only available on DVD?

I went through my collection a while back and now stick to around 500. I go through every now and again and think am I going to watch this again, have I watched it in the last couple of years?
If the answer is no, then I sell it on or give it away.
To be honest it's the best thing I did, I don't miss those I got rid of and I think 500 of your favourite movies is more than enough.

I hear you. I’m at 288 & I feel very satisfied. It will be nice to get to a round number like 300, but really, I won’t own a film unless I genuinely care for it.

1. "Good" =/= "Enjoyable"
2. LOL at the suggestion that there aren't 1,000+ enjoyable movies in the world. God you must hate movies.

People who think we compulsively collect movies just to have the biggest collection don't understand that having that many movies can be a pain in the ass.

Space-wise, forget it. I do not have space for the number of movies I have right now. But at the same time, there legit aren't that many that I'd want to purge.

Some people just like movies, and are able to enjoy plenty of movies that even most people would deem garbage. I count myself lucky to be the former, not the latter.

I've nearly breached 2600, and at my current rate would go over 3000 this year. But I will be deliberately slowing down for the next few months, and just keeping up with pre-orders. I can never see me stopping though

Yeah I know what you mean. I never ever thought I would have over 1,000 blurays in my personal collection. I just started collecting bluray with Batman v Superman (which I absolutely love and I own 4 versions of, so make of that what you will). I was collecting DVD for 15 years before that film came out. I try to steer clear of adding blurays to my collection unless they have some connection to me, or if they're ultra collectible I may add it and check it out.

Other than a lot of new-to-me titles from boutique labels all of my titles are movies that I have a fondness for. I have an entire shelf labeled 90s movies, which are mostly the ones I saw in theaters in the 90s. Most of my movies are these films that I want in my collection for that time where I'm like "I want to watch so and so tonight..." and I can watch it. Streaming is so difficult to find a certain movie that you come back to time and again. It certainly has it's value, but being surrounded by these films just makes me feel good.

Even if I have a shelf with Vinegar Syndrome titles...

There aren't really a lot of people who do this. They still cost money, and even people who collect impractical stuff don't buy stuff they don't actually want.

Keep in mind that blu rays have been around for like fifteen years now, and most of us have been slowly but steadily acquiring them the whole time.

EDIT: I need to emphasize my abject shock at the realization that they've been around that long.
