God-Forbid we see all the artwork, especially since they touched it up for IMAX and 1:66:1 is what the director's best felt appropriate for that version.

I'm just saying they've been fine with the 1:66:1 aspect ratio ever since it's first home video release, presented in what the DVD calls the "Originally Created Aspect Ratio" and just now they've decided to go with the Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio. Not so much complaining as it is curiosity. One must ask, why? It's not consistent with the other Diamond Edition CAPS releases or the past home releases of this film or even Musker and Clements other Diamond Edition release, The Little Mermaid. It's also weird that the Vudu release is consistent with past releases. Was this the director's call or someone else? We'll probably never know.

Maybe you should all contact Disney Studios Help about the aspect ratio issue if it really means that much.

Thousands of 1.85 movies have extra top and bottom information as well. You want all those in 1.33???
But, why would they draw and animate something in 1.66:1 if it's gonna get cropped? Why draw something if you don't want it to be seen? It seems to me that 1.66:1 IS the INTENDED aspect ratio, 1.85:1 is just how they decided to show it at the cinema. Just like 1.33 is the intended AR for "The Jungle Book" and "Robin Hood".

You can't compare open-matted regular movies with animated movies. Animation and artwork isn't being cropped with regular movies. Or I guess it depend on the movie, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" looks fine in 1.85 for instance, but "Aladdin" definitely looks too cramped in that AR.

To be honest, does this whole aspect ratio "problem" really matter?

Because IMAX is a 1.44 format and they wanted to fill the screen as much as possible. It was a one-off anyway. Some movies like Oblivion or Skyfall had different aspect ratios with more information for their IMAX showings, but *only* for IMAX.

There has been several Blu-rays that present films in their theatrical aspect ratios for the first time on home video, like Star Trek VI or Austin Powers International Man of Mystery.

Vudu uses an older HD master.

1.85 has been set in stone for the USA since the 1950s for "flat" 35MM films. Some European showings were either 1.66 or 1.75. There were exceptions of course, but Disney always composed their movies for the 1.85 aspect ratio in the 1990s. CAPS renders at 1.66 so yes, the animation will have extra info. This also lessens the cropping for 1.33 VHS versions which were so important at the time. But we are not worried about VHS versions now. We don't have 1.33 televisions sold anymore, which we still did when Aladdin was issued on DVD.

I can't believe this is has become an issue. It's a lose lose situation for Disney because either way you'd piss off different facets of people regarding the aspect ratio they would have used. So they went with the the theatrical aspect ratio which is fine by me because isn't that Blu's are for? To simulate the theater experience?

How many times are we going to go through this? NO. NO! The intended AR for post-Dalmatians features IS NOT 1.33:1. They were PROTECTED for possible TV airings, the same as Aladdin. HDTV was a twinkle in some technician's eye in 1992, and in 1992, it was a 4:3 home video world, but the films were intended to be seen in theaters, not on home video.

Also, I DO have TLK, and the second screen (PC/Mac) doesn't work, even you remove the S from the HTTPS of the link (It elicits an error otherwise). It needs to be fixed.
Works for me, but then, I downloaded the entire SS app to my iPad day and date of release (also Tron Legacy, Bambi, Pirates IV, Lady and the Tramp, Dark Knight Rises). It gave me a new appreciation for the film. It's like a private tour of the Animation Research Library. Lady and the Tramp is probably the best of all the Second Screen apps, but Lion King gives it a run for the money.

Thanks for that mate, the stuff that's removed was from a live event that Leonard Maltin hosted in 2004, a shame its been removed as it served as the framework for the making of doco.

But that's Disney disc releases for you, one step forward one step back.
