Better processing, i.e. tone mapping via the DV engine. But that depends on your setup. People with projectors enable the player doing LLDV via HDMI adapters by now for ex (adapter tells the player "I speak DV" , player does LLDV, adapter puts out HDR10 instead incl. 12 bit in case of MEL) and also benefit from better tone mapping that way and reportedly even without actual DV content that is mind you.

It's a pity that this is a thing, but depending on your setup (and the disc), I'm afraid it currently is.

This had the effect of dimming the image a fair bit which is what made Troopers look much silkier and way less aggressive first time around, but I stopped using that mode a while ago and as I returned to Troopers over the last few years using my main viewing mode (which properly tracks the PQ curve) it looked rougher and rougher. Ironically enough though the DV is making it dimmer anyway so I'm back where I started
Oh, I also wouldn't expect you to delete such. And I also only "look" for what I already know is there. But I should've added a smiley.
[Show spoiler]I also would've thanked the new review, if it wasn't for the logic hounds.

Anyway, I also forgot a question: Do you get similiar results with the old disc, if you just force DV with the Oppo? Inquiring mind being inquiring.

So DV on built-in app is broken then according to you? If yes then if I disable DV and feed via HDMI then then why the brightness level of HDR10 looks similar to built-in app DV?

Asking because this is something that has been discussed for years in AVSForum.

If I were to compare a 700 nit DV grade on my 77A80J and the same on ZD9, the OLED easily outperforms the Z right off the bat. You could hire the best calibrators but it is not going to change the net result.

I expect many problems to be addressed with the new MediaTek Pentonic chipset which should be there in the TVs next year. The 85X95K has a native contrast of 5000:1 and ex ZD9 owners are happy with it.

I'll preface this by saying the forced DV clips a few points of black (in the low latency mode anyways) which is why I don't use it, but when I get a sec I'll check it with the old disc and see what it does vs the real-but-fake DV disc.

Just to add: I think the spoofed DV output is HDR12 regardless of the source having FEL or not, the Dobly engine upsamples MEL to 12-bit 4:2:2 anyway.

Re: the forced DV I was quickly reminded of why I don’t use it, not just for the black clipping but it also clips highlights at 1000 nits which is just no good for them Troopers with their Light Cannon™️! It was still VERY bright in forced DV though, much more so than the actual DV disc.

Just bought the 20th Anniversary 4K UHD. I'm expecting to be very, very bright with a lot of grain in indoor scenes. This is another Verhoeven film that seems so repeatedly watchable that I wouldn't be surprised if I got the 25th Anniversary release of it too at some point. I ended up with two 4K editions of Total Recall, and similarly, the film has such replay value that I didn't really mind.

Is this new release likely to get a non steelbook release as I particularly am not big on most steelbooks but will pick it up if it's not likely.

I just got my copy, boy some of those outdoors sun shots look like a nuclear blast is taking place over their shoulder. The overall look of the film is quite different to how it looked on previous home versions.

For better or worse? I have the UHD from 5 years ago. I read the review from this site and it was full of praise so I was thinking about picking up the new version.

Only if your tone mapping is pish. Unless you just mean it's crazy bright, in which case: yes (but it shouldn't be clipping any highlights).

Never noticed before how obvious contact lenses are until I started trying them myself, because I'm normally not that close to people. Not sure why Neil Patrick Harris would be wearing them for a scene anyway, unless he's legally blind. But maybe theatrical presentations didn't reveal it like 4K HDR.

Watched the 20th anniversary 4K UHD for the first time a couple of nights ago and thought it was great. Might be tempted to get the newer release further down the line, but for the moment, I'm pleased with the presentation on this one. I'm keeping my Blu-ray of it too. A fantastic film.

I used to do something similar every now and then on my old Samsung KS8000. If you turned on the normally hot and clipped Dynamic Contrast High option then lowered contrast to 75, the range on something like the Xbox or Playstation HDR calibration patterns would double. 1200 would act like 2400. It really gave things a rich and earthy look, comparable to the HDR+ mode on the TV. I tried it maybe three times with that TV, and would maybe enjoy it for a day or two, before the slightly drained and smeary look would remind me this isn't going to work. Only thing I recall actually trying to watch that way once was Fury Road.

Starship Troopers was definitely one of those UHD's that made me happier early on, but over the years probably wouldn't make it onto a list.

No not clipping anything, it just looks sooo different and I am unsure if that’s how it is “meant to” look.

This is one shot and scene where it just looks really off.

I see what you mean with the colour and high contrast vs the previous version.
