Either you buy it, or you don't!
It doesn't do much to complain about it here aside from raise awareness to those who were going to buy it and might change their mind.

It is worth complaining to Lionsgate and not buying it, though, that way if they don't get the sales they expected they have a reason other than "its an old movie on 4k uhd = bad sales".

If this were a normal Blu-ray/DVD release the lack of original mono wouldnt matter in overall sales, but being 4k uhd is ultra niche I could see a lot of the people interested in the format passing on the release since they are film enthusiasts and hence impacting sales. Getting per Bill Hunt what sounds like a nuanced increase in PQ for many film enthusiasts is not going to be worth trading off the original mono soundtrack.

On the current 40th Anniversary release yes, on every video release between 1998 til now no. Those had a remix done for the 20th Anniversary reissue that remixed the music and added a bunch of unnecessary Foley. The new release has as close to the 1978 mix we have gotten in 20 years.

Default Halloween (1978) 4K UHD

I think is worth trying to let Lionsgate know that we want the original mono included from the collection box set. And maybe the new commentary by Nick Castle, Tommy Lee Wallace, and Dean Cundey from the box set would be nice. Is not like they need to make a 100% new restoration process. Just that after the first few pressings of the disc sold out. They could update the 4k disc and just replace the downmix with the true original mono one. Same packaging, disc art, and everything. They could just update the specifications text to include the commentary IF they condsidered it. And maybe a slightly different UPC code to identify it as the new updated release. Non-hardcore fans and the rest of the public can get the first few batches of the 4k release. We could wait (if Lionsgate considers updating) for the new one. Lionsgate can update it when Halloween 2018 hits its way on blu-ray!!!!!!.However as stated before, they might not want to. But its worth to try and let them know.

I think the cheapest things to do would be to do replacement discs on the sly. Eg. only send them out to people who contact them. A lot of labels do this.

Then when the first pressing is finished...

Yeah 'cause the Arrow 4K scan of The Thing is garbage. Scream Factory must share this point of view too.

If the packaging said, "Original 1978 English Mono Track - Not Mixdown" then it would be false advertising.

You're splitting hairs. Nobody in their right mind would want a mono track for no reason, if it's just a mix-down. The mono track is included because it's supposed to be the original audio as it was originally presented with the original sound effects and music cues. Obviously that was the intention of the mono track being included, and it's obvious they just screwed up as usual.

I'm not sure why so many are having a hard time understanding why we want the original audio. My girlfriend is not a techno-geek but totally understands the value in having the original mono/stereo tracks of older films.

Would I watch it with the mono track every time? Maybe, maybe not. I may prefer the expanded scope and immersion of the surround. But the point is all films should include the original audio track. Maybe I watch it with the surround every year and I want to mix it up now and then by throwing the original track on for comparison.

They approved the new grade (which might mean they just watched a few random snippets and gave their seal of approval). It doesn't mean they were aware Lionsgate screwed up the original audio track.

I just placed the order for this (with a $5 RZ cert on top of that) so I just could not pass this up. Interesting, because I tried ordering it at first on my tablet and it told me it was out of stock, so I went on my laptop and it worked perfectly so I suspect this will be out of stock soon (I checked Amazon and its $149.99!).

It was out of stock yesterday, so I was surprised to see it back in stock today!

At this point I think people either just like to argue or are being willfully obtuse. The sound issue has nothing to do with the number of channels -- it has to do with the original sound being altered or new sounds being introduced.

I just want the original sounds, regardless of which speaker(s) they come from. The frustrating thing is, including the original mono mix along with the 7.1 remix wouldn't have upset anyone. Everyone would get what they want.

Not to mention, while I’m sure having the downmix was a mistake and not intentional, having a mono that’s a downmix of the surround mix is rather pointless. You can’t just say ‘Oh well. It’s A Mono track so it’s good enough’. No it’s not. Having a downmix of the surround is makes no sense. The original TRUE mono at least has a purpose.
