I hope the Rossellini and Grillet delays are because they decided it would be more viable to release them in large box sets.
*fingers crossed* |

The Seven Samurai steelbook is £9.99 on Zavvi at the moment, I was just wondering if it is worth getting - is the transfer as good as the Criterion edition? (I have the 3-disc Criterion DVD, so I am not bothered about extras).

The Schalcken the Painter disc really is one of the best of the year. I had a grainy bootleg of the main feature, but seeing it again in this quality was a revelation. It was better than I remembered - it's excellent actually - and can be seen as a fitting cap on the great tradition of BBC christmas scary tales. And then we have the two short films, both of which are highly atmospheric, especially The Pledge.
I'm really happy BFI is taking a chance on these BBC productions, and they should be congratulated for it. The original Ghost Stories obviously did very well, so they decided to release more from the archives. There aren't many more I can think of, but hopefully they might surprise us next year (Penda's Fen would be a welcome release). |

I wholeheartedly agree on Penda's Fen or any other Alan Clarke BBC productions. Ken Russell and Peter Watkins also directed some marvellous films for the BBC that need a good release

Absolutely. Hooray for Eureka's Punishment Park, but I'm really aching for Culloden, The War Game and Watkins' Edvard Munch documentary. I'm sure there's more Watkins that's worth seeing, and for Russell I'm only really familiar with some of his more commercial extravaganzas. (Will The Devils ever get released?)

Russell's television work is some of his very best (and his composer biopics in particular), you should give it a shot if you have a chance. |

^ I've seen his Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Mahler biopics, at least. And The Devils. And Tommy, of course. (Not fussed about that one, personally.) And I wouldn't mind seeing The Boy Friend again. But not sure what else he'd done that was worth catching.

![]() Like you, I have the Park Circus release, but indulged in the BFI release as well. My copy has dispatched, but I'm in the Antipodes, so it'll possibly be nearly Christmas by the time it gets here. (Our post slows to a crawl at this time of year.) |

Elgar and Song of Summer are superb films, both very different from the his later, more maniacal work. The BFI released them on DVD ages ago but they're now OOP. The Debussy Film, starring Oliver Reed, is also very good.

I've just noticed that Redemption in the US have both 'Successive Slidings of Pleasure' and 'Trans-Europ Express' upcoming for February. Could this be the reason why the BFI releases have been delayed/removed? I know Redemption tend to (but not always) have both US and UK release rights for the titles they release.
