Thank you. That was exactly my take.

Several people have expressed that they were disappointed or didn't care for the film. That's perfectly fine. No one's arguing with them.

There's a difference between that and what we're talking about.

Im fine with members giving their opinion + or -, but when ones constantly post over and over the same take and arguing every point day after day (good or bad, neg or post) it is TEDIOUS for everyone. Discuss? Yes. Dictate? No ty.

This is a thread for a movie. It is absolutely perfectly legitimate for someone to come here and trash the movie as they want. That is the essense of film criticism - it is the discussion of a film's merits. Cinema is also a business so it's fair game to discuss commercial aspects of a film.

I would say this is about my favorite film of the year too. It is perfectly legitimate for anyone to go in there and tear it to pieces.

I see this zeal to get dissenting voices banned as troubling and indicative of infantalization. Tough luck kids - different human beings think differently from you. Grow up and accept that. You don't need to have soul shattering trauma every time someone disagrees with you.

The issue is that the guy hasn't seen the film and feels he has an informed opinion about the film just because he loves the book. Nope, that's not how it works. I'm not gonna go into a thread about a film/show that I haven't seen and talk shit about why it sucks. That makes no sense and does come off as trolling/thread crapping.

What the heck is up with this thread? The movie is great, with great performances. I also like the book a lot. You can like both!

There's always the possibility of not engaging. He has several posts because people converse with him.

If he's being engaged in a conversation, I don't see a problem with him posting multiple times.

Gatekeeping is a greater sin in my opinion, a forum is a public square. everyone's welcome.

Many critics agree that it's one of the best films of the year for good reason. Complaining that the film isn't as good as the book without actually watching the film first seems like another out of touch statement from you. Sit back, relax, and watch the film. You might actually enjoy it.

Yes, it's seeming that they did the theatrical release, then they're doing a premium VOD release, likely a bigger hope of a possible physical release in the US (I'm importing the Italian release in January, unless the US announces a release before then), and then maybe Apple will be its final stopping place. That's pretty brilliant, actually.

By the way, Eagle Pictures of Italy rocks. They are releasing the new Polanski film and "Killers" on the same day, in English friendly releases. "Killers" will have a 4K and blu ray steelbook, a 4K and blu ray standard version, a blu ray, and a DVD. They are also distributing "Napoleon". They just recently released Marco Bellocchio's latest film, "Kidnapped" (with English subs), and they released "CODA" (with English subs for the sign language parts).

Not sure why anyone would be concerned about the box office. In Hollywood all movies lose money. It’s a scientific fact.

Numbers are fun. Leo got a fun paycheck for Flower; $25M.
Some people would need a million lifetimes to earn only a fraction of that fun.

You sound really proud of him and seems like you got immense joy and enjoyment out of your friend Leo getting paid.

You can be even prouder. He was paid $40 million not $25 million.

I'll give it to him that he's a very careful troll. I know the kind of posts he'd love to be ranting, but he'd get banned in a second if he did.

By the way, putting what one thinks is a clever TITLE to every single post one makes is one of the most pretentious things I've ever seen on here.

I did a double feature with The Holdovers today (a great thing to do once in a while: to walk into a movie theater and watch two or three films; the times aligned perfectly). While this wasn't my favorite Scorsese film--I will grant that to The King of Comedy (maybe?)--, I believe this is one of the finest films to date from the 21st century--even if we're only 22 years in going on 23. The music, the acting (aside from De Niro's scrunched face), the cinematography, the sets, the writing: all of it was precise, on beat. It actually felt like a "real" movie.

Off topic, but we’re actually going to be 23 years into the 21st Century on Monday 1-1-2024, not on Sunday 1-1-2023. I’ll private message you later as to why.

The theatrical release was literally an afterthought.

They partnered up with Paramount, and Paramount distributed the film.
It was Paramount's first. Apple was brought in second.

May 2020:
EXCLUSIVE: Deadline hears that the tug of war over one of the highest profile films in Hollywood is about over. Apple will win the derby for the Martin Scorsese-directed film Killers Of The Flower Moon, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the lead roles. The deals are being papered — Paramount still has to sign off — but I’m told when they are, it will be an Apple original film, and Paramount will distribute theatrically worldwide. https://deadline.com/2020/05/killers...nt-1202904816/

Some after thought...

Yes, it was Paramount's first. Actually, it was Imperative Entertainment's first. They brought it first to Paramount, even way back when JJ Abrams(!) was being considered for it. Scorsese came on board after. Paramount didn't like the ever-inflating budget. Then, it was briefly going to be a joint venture between Paramount and Fox, then Fox bowed out. Paramount then was getting cold feet, and permitted Scorsese and company to shop the project around to other financiers. It even briefly was considered by Netflix (who'd done 'The Irishman'). Finally, it was Apple that would pay Imperative, Scorsese, Leo et.al. what they wanted, and finance the film. Paramount had first dibs on distributing. Apple didn't care if it played theaters or not.

Then, this was more or less abandoned during the height of the pandemic, mid-20, when no one knew if/when theaters would even be a thing, anymore, anytime soon. Apple was now aiming for putting it straight onto Apple's service. It was announced in mid-21, when the film was finally filming after a year delay due to the pandemic, that Apple was aiming to have it on the streaming service by November 2022. In 2022, it was revised to Christmas 2022. Then, as Fall approached it was delayed again, now aiming for a Cannes premiere in 2023.

Finally, with the world back up and running, and the Cannes premiere approaching, Apple and Paramount talked first of giving the film a token release in limited theaters, followed by the streaming service, then it was finally decided and then announced that the film would, indeed, be getting a wide theatrical worldwide release in theaters. Scorsese apparently desperately wanted the film to play wide in theaters.

So, for the sake of argument, I guess you could say it was a 'revived' idea, rather than an afterthought.

Of course, when it was a Paramount project, or a Paramount/Fox project, it was going to be a conventional, theatrical release. That's why they didn't like the budget. But once Apple came on board, and the pandemic happened, it became much more of a streaming project.

And the point still stands that it has been said that Apple had a very specific plan for their original films content division and 'were willing to lose money in the short term' for a prestige investment into their streaming service over a 3 to 5 year term.

In other words, Paramount was likely never going to make the film. Apple made the film, because they didn't care about immediate return.

I bet it'll be $24.99 to rent and $29.99 to own.
