Hmm. That doesn't sound promising. Surprising too as Film Movement is usually pretty good when it comes to subtitles.

I wonder what he’s having issues with things besides the grammar? A period piece is probably particularly difficult to subtitle.

That sounds terrible. It reminds me of the awful English Dub of 9th Company. I had to turn it off when they had Soviet Paratroopers in 1988 calling each other "homie"

Another reason why I hate dubs. Much prefer original language and subtitles.

Did anyone catch any of the theatrical screenings yet? The local theater in the SF bay area were showing them over the weekend but I couldn't make them for health reasons.

From the book Hong Kong Babylon (which came out in the late 90s, so any bitterness was still fresh), he said he wasn't a fan of Woo because he didn't communicate well with him and that he only seemed to trust Chow Yun-fat with his acting choices. I think he was mostly upset that Woo replaced his voice in the film because it wasn't deep enough. I'm sure the three decades since (with Wong going on to have a very successful career) has probably healed those wounds.

As mentioned earlier, I saw Peking Opera Blues yesterday. Some of the night shots were a little wonky but I'd imagine the film stock wasn't the best. A couple of shots were also a bit soft, but again, this wasn't Warner Bros. giving Kubrick an unlimited budget. Overall, it was good. Solid mono sound, picture that was miles ahead of all other sources, and subs that didn't bother me 99% of the time. (A small handful of limes were a little clunky, or sped by too quickly.) I was happy, and everybody in the theater cheered at the end.

Awesome. Which theater did you watch it and how was the turnout?

Peking Opera Blues is actually my favorite film in the Golden Princess library, even more than the John Woo stuff. People, who haven't seen it before, are in for a real treat.

I did catch Peking Opera Blues in New York. Had seen it multiple times on the large screen over the years. Was hoping to be blown away by the image restoration but it was just alright. Image was free of scratches. Expected the colors, the reds and blues to pop but they were rather muted. Subtitles were very good, similar to the work on the Hong Kong Rescue disc. I liked that Sally Yeh's character is pleasingly names "Bak Nau" instead of "Pat Neil". That always bugged me. The audience ate it up and had a great time.

I saw it here. Turnout wasn't fantastic (40 people max?) but it was 12:30 PM on a Sunday. Everybody who showed up was into it, though. The comedy bits got good laughs, and there were a couple of gasps during certain scenes. I'll be sure to catch all the other films when they're shown.

Had it been announced anywhere that the Shanghai Blues disc will come out in February?
