The two I intend to get to are If I Should Die Before I Wake and The Big Night. (None Shall Escape is on my dvr, else I'd watch that too.)

Everything else depends on time/interest when I finally get to going thru them on my appletv. But I do have a list now to make sure I stay focused. (I have seen a good number of them already… and some I have on disc, still unwatched.)

Anyone else having issues with the Criterion Channel's "resume" or "continue watching" category? I've had six titles show up as "continue watching" that have nothing to do with any activity I've instigated. I watched two of the movies in their entirety YEARS ago, and the other four I've never seen. I feel like it's a big glitch, or I've been hacked. Changed my password and sent two "help" emails, but they've responded that there's nothing they can do. Very annoying.

I've not had anything show up that I haven't watched, I don't think, but there is at least one movie I finished watching that's still in the "continue watching" category. It has always been kind of glitchy, tbh.

Also, if you start something, it leaves the Channel, and then returns, it will pop back up in the section wherever you left it - even years later.

Yeah, I hear ya about things reappearing but we're mid-month and four of these movies don't interest me at all, much less things I'd started watching. Plus, the two I have actually seen before (Sanjuro and Red Desert) I watched YEARS ago and definitely finished. The "progress bar" on the Red Desert thumbnail even SHOWS that I finished that! It's a very weird glitch.

Yeah I've had the same thing - I've got seven titles showing.

Even though they're listed as "continue watching", if I click on any of them they play from the start.

It's a good job there's an easy way to get rid of unwanted titles in your "continue watching" list. Oh, wait...

I wish there was an easy way to remove something from my "Continue watching" list. I have some things in there that I don't particularly care to finish, and as far as I can tell, the only way to remove them is to fast forward to the end.

The other way to remove them that works sometimes is to start the movie over and let it play for a second or two then hit the go back button. You might have to quit the app or even do other stuff before it registers, or even restart your device.

My theory is that if you are logged into the channel in more than one place, it can also get confused that way so I always just stay logged in at one place. You can log out from everywhere via their website…

Anyway, some or all or none of these things have worked for me in the past at any given time.

I watched two expiring Argentine noirs originally written by Cornell Woolrich: Never Open That Door and If I Should Die Before I Wake.

Both excellent!

They were originally planned as one movie - like Wong Kar-Wai’s Chungking Express and Fallen Angels - but ended up as two.

Tonight: I'll probably stay in Argentina with The Beast Must Die.

After that, I'll jump on a plane and head to another country on the Channel. (I'm not really all that interested in Native Son, and The Bitter Stems and El Vampiro Negro are on Kanopy.)

I watched The Lady from Shanghai and Stars in My Crown yesterday, both expiring at the end of the month. The Lady from Shanghai was all right. I don't understand why Orson Welles chose to do a bad Irish accent throughout though. There was no particular reason why his character had to be Irish.

Starts in My Crown was pretty dreary. If it was on your list, I recommend skipping it. It was the first movie I've seen Dean Stockwell in as a child actor though. He was quite good, actually.

Because he could? Yeah, I don't know either. I found that strange myself.

This isn't on the Channel, so I assume you watched it on HBO Max or elsewhere?

I personally loved it. movie for me.

And I agree - Dean Stockwell was superb as a child actor. He was good as an adult too, but dare I say better as a child.

Stars In My Crown is one of those movies I started watching once or twice, but seemingly never finished it. fwiw

I did see Never Open That Door on tcm, but when I recorded it, I didn't realize that If I Should Die Before I Wake, which I did not record, was associated with it somehow until it was too late. So I must rectify that oversight… any day now.

I did start watching The Big Night the other night, but fell asleep. I know I've done the same thing when it was on tcm, so we shall see if I make it through that one…

They're unrelated plot and character-wise. Just that they're all based on stories originally written by Cornell Woolrich. I actually watched If I Should Die Before I Wake first, even though it's presumably the third entry in the "trilogy" (Never Open That Door has the first two). I don't think it matters.

Not sure if I should skip The Big Night based on your experience or prioritize it because you also fell asleep to the awesome (IMO) Stars in My Crown.

Yes! You're right. My mistake. I saw it on HBO Max.

Regarding The Big Night I was apparently thinking of a different movie I was trying to watch recently (not even sure which one ), so disregard what I wrote.

What did actually happen when I tried to watch The Big Night for the first time the other night is that I quickly realizied that it wasn't the right time to be watching it mood-wise, and maybe it also got too late, and I should save it for later.

And I just finished watching it and it's kind of quirky but pretty good all in all. I'd recommend giving it a shot.

On to If I Should Die Before I Wake tonight or tomorrow.

But yeah, I'm gonna have to really be in the mood to give The Stars In My Crown another go.

I continued my Argentine Noir binge with The Beast Must Die, which is also superb.

I think I'm just going to pick a different genre tonight - preferably a comedy, if any are in my expiring watchlist - for a change of pace.

But I'm still interested in The Big Night and will try to watch it before the end of the month.

I just watched Polanski's The Ghost Writer, great PQ, but all the '****s' were replaced with bloodies, buggers, sods, and one 'floody; when the dubbing artist couldn't quite sell a 'b' sound.
Was this the airplane version?! What's going on?
'Floody' is particularly outrageous, and vulgar.

I ended up not being in the mood for anything else on the expiring list after watching three awesome Argentine noirs. I might check out a couple of shorts today. Otherwise, I'm calling it a month.

I kinda got burned out too (mostly watching other stuff), but I did make it back to watch If I Should Die Before I Wake and glad I did. It was as good as the other Argentinian flicks (all of which I caught on tcm when they aired there on Film Noir Alley).

On to August… (already… )
