Love and Other Drugs (theater)

Film: 3 1/2 (out of 4)

Hard to believe that Ed Zwick, director of such acclaimed war movies as Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, and Defiance, took on a romantic comedy. The fact that he did it successfully shows just how good of a director he is, especially in such a formulaic genre.

I thought the acting here was fantastic--Gyllenhaal just keeps getting better. Anne Hathaway probably would get an Oscar nom if it weren't for such an unusually deep year in that category. She plays the early onset of Parkinson's role very well.

What I liked about this film is it does what romantic comedies are supposed to do, but then goes a step further. The film is genuinely moving, with the scenes at the convention and at the buffet really sticking out. It is also quite funny, with many laugh out loud parts. What makes it go a step further is that it defies formula and aims to comment on the pharmaceutical industry. While it doesn't do so as well as it could have, the thoughts are still there.

Night and Fog (Criterion dvd)

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

Synopsis:

Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust, Night and Fog (Nuit et brouillard) contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps’ quiet, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. With Night and Fog, Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man’s violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again.

Review:

A must see for everybody. This film came out a very short time after WWII ended, and showed to the world the horrors of the Holocaust as it had never been seen. At that time, many people still thought the whole thing was a hoax (how idiots today can still deny it is beyond me--Ahmadinejad, among others). The footage is powerful, although you've probably seen it before. The composer and narrator are both Holocaust survivors, which is something to note. I found the narration to be very eloquent.

The Thin Red Line (Criterion blu)

PQ and AQ: 5 (out of 5)

Quite simply, the definition of demo material in both categories. Words cannot describe how good both are.

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

I'm undoubtedly biased about this film and Malick's work in general, so I won't comment

I like Pearl Harbor and think I would rate it about a 3 1/2 to 4 stars out of 5 actually. Got Em!!

Ha ha. I didnt know that. Does Showtime?

I just watch everything a year late on Blu. I hate waiting a WEEK for the next episode and on networks like ABC, CBS and NBC, as you know, it takes an hour and a half to watch a 23 minute sit-com because of all the advertisements. Yes, I exagerated a smidge.

Yes. Didnt hate it, but it wasnt good enough for me to like it. If it took itself and the audience seriously, it could have been a 5er.
I was really bummed after watching the great trailer for months in anticipation.

I rate it 3 stars out of 5 but my rating system appears to be different than most here-- 3 stars means a good movie, not "mediocre or average".
4 stars means very good to excellent, and 5 stars is outstanding...

I didn't care for the romance part either and it did go on wayyyy too long but the movie really delivered during the attack sequence and quite frankly that's what people came to see...

I rated Pearl Harbor 2 stars (out of 4). I thought it was an embarassment of a historical movie and did a disservice to that tragic event.

Thats where I have read it misses. I keep reading that it cant decide what it wants to be. But you are saying thay made it work, eh? Cool. A blend of genre and theme is fine if they can pull it off, in my book.

The critics aren't wrong about it's shortcomings. The script could've been tighter and focused more on the industry, taking out some of the superfluous comedic moments. I agree that it doesn't know what it wants to be and is uneven in a sense, going from depressing physical ailments to juvenile comedy, but even DESPITE that I found it to be a very good film. In the end, it was the performances of Gyllenhaal and Hathaway that raised it up to me.
