I think his point is that two sales in close proximity lessens the potential revenue to be made by Criterion from 'direct from their site' sales.

...and yes, they are two different entities, but Criterion sends an email to its email subscribers telling of the B&N sale. so there's that, too.

It's like saying the Apple Store would refuse to run a 24-hour sale just because Best Buy plans to put iPhones on sale 2-3 weeks later. Some people's logic makes no sense.

Even if it DID conflict, Criterion has no stake in the B&N sale. B&N can choose to discount or run a sale on any of their product after they stock it. It doesn't mean any more profit or incentives for Criterion themselves.

But it's a hollow point. Because 1) it's only 24 hours, and 2) Criterions sale comes first.

Otherwise, they wouldn't do it every year 2 weeks before the B&N sale.

It's just funny to see knee-jerk reactions when it doesn't happen the day people think it might.

I won't speak to the point of them possibly not having it because it's too late or anything like that, but you're wrong about them not having any stake in it. If they didn't, they wouldn't be sending emails telling people that B&N is having their semi-annual sale.

If Criterion is going to have the sale next week then I'll skip it and wait for the BN sale. For me it's matter of which credit card statement do I want the charge on - November (2 pay days) or December (3 pay days). I'll go with December.

Someone posted a live pic of the DVD packaging on eBay:

So at least we know that the DVD is a plastic case. And the booklet looks to be pretty thin so the blu ray almost certainly will be as well.

And as for the movie, I agree with the poster who said that it's nothing less than one of the greatest films ever made. Generally, there are two types of Altman films: The folksy ensemble films like Nashville and Short Cuts and abstract dreamy films like 3 Women and Images. I think McCabe falls right in the middle of these two types of Altman films - in a good way. As in there's a good chance that fans of both types will like it rather than dislike it. I've heard some western fans who had this movie recommended to them say that it's boring and there are no western shootouts in the film. Well, not to spoil anything, but there are. I guess they haven't finished watching the film. But it's definitely more heavy on atmosphere than action.

No kidding. We are only a couple weeks away from tip off.

I watch Hoop Dreams every year during the NBA finals. It's my version of a Christmas movie that way.

I also find Undefeated, which won the Acadeny Award for best documentary a few years ago, to be an extraordinary sports documentary. Both are about so much more than sports.

The Criterion rewards points are 50/500 which is exactly what a BN membership discount gives immediately and not at some cumulative point later (My first cert took 3 years). It's quite a bit less than the routinely available discounted GC from various sites including BN.

If Apple doesn't care if BBY is going to run a sale with 20+% lower prices next week then that doesn't seem to be a sound strategy assuming of course the consumers know the BBY is scheduled. If that same BBY sale is in 8 weeks and the goal is to sell more items directly then it seems to be in Apple's best interest to know when it's competitors are having their sale.

If Criterion wants to sell more items directly from their site, it most certainly makes a difference how far spaced the sales are. If that's not Criterion's actual goal then it really doesn't matter. I think most people who have the potential to shop at both places would rather buy 4 items at BN instead of 3 (or 3 for 2) at Criterion for the same $$ outlay if the gratification delay is 2 weeks vs 4-6wks (or 12 wks in Feb/March) though maybe I'm completely wrong on the consumer side other than my own buying choices
I would rather buy direct from Criterion, so I think they will sell on site just fine whether it be this week or not. Ad again, just because it didn't happen today isn't some indictment that it won't still happen this week, like it did on Thursday two years ago.

I think Hari made some valid points...They will sell some off course, but closer to the November it will be, people familiar with B&N (and ok to shop from B&N) will tend to buy less. I for one purchased some GCs from criterion.com to split the purchase into multiple months...I did not plan to buy a lot but I have $75 worth of GC, so whenever it happens I will get something worth more than $75...otherwise I would not have gotten anything if it happens within 2 weeks of B&N sale start.

I much prefer B&N's instant discount compared to criterion's way of $50/$500...Although I am happy that there are people who to buy criterion directly and/or criterion's way of reward...

I just wanted to ask for a ballpark estimate - how much would the Zatoichi set go for during the B&N sale?

Sorry for derailing any film conversation.

$100 before any coupon. At the most it'd about $85 (plus tax) using a 15% off coupon, which should be available sometime during the sale.

Oh okay thank you.
I was debating either getting that set or sticking with my $40 order of Lone Wolf and Cub. I'll own both eventually. I just didn't k ow which one to go for first.

I sure hope there's a flash sale soon. I canceled my pre-order of McCabe & Mrs. Miller expecting to see a flash sale today.

I did the same thing. But, worse comes to worst, I figure if what was said about what the next batch of Costco titles are going to be was true (Boyhood, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Blood Simple & Pan's Labyrinth), I may just hold off on ordering those during the flash sale and just pick those up when I'm grocery shopping.

I'm actually wondering if Costco would carry the Del Toro Trilogia as well. They do like selling box sets there.

Edward J Grug III:

I ended up watching the most recent episode of Documentary Now! and I laughed my arse off. I don't believe I would have "gotten it" had I not seen Salesman first! I just thought it was totally brilliant how they spun it around (no pun intended) into Globesman. Hilarious! It goes to show, one has to watch the original film they are satirizing first before you can watch a new episode, at least if you want to understand, appreciate and notice the references. Man, they did an amazing job with Globesman though.

Received "McCabe" today and popped it in when I got home from work. The A/V quality is an absolute revelation after watching the old DVD for years. Probably one of the biggest improvements I've seen. Looks better in motion than it does in the caps for sure.

Traded in a few movies at Movie Trading Company and got Boyhood on Criterion for $13.10. A masterpiece.
