my previous job....i told them we needed a beer station in the break room. i said if we were allowed just one beer per shift, it'd make the day go much better.

I really think more employers should feed their employees daily, would probably boost morale in a lot of work places.

where my dad worked, they had an actual lunch room that served breakfast and lunch daily, m-f. most times, he'd leave early and eat breakfast there. and he ate lunch there, every day. id' eaten there a few times, and it was pretty dang good food. and it was a big lunch room. and one whole wall was nothing but windows, and it had an awesome view. the office sat on top of a small mountain (more like a really big hill, lol; but it's called red mountain) and you could see really far from up there.

During my short time at Google, we got all the free food you could ever dream of. If you've seen The Internship, it's exactly like that. Professional chefs cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday-Friday. Every floor of the building (my building had four floors) had two micro-kitchens stocked with every kind of soda, energy drink, juice, water, fruit, cereal, beef jerky, candy, etc. all free to take. There was basically a Starbucks inside the building (it wasn't called Starbucks, but it was essentially that). They'd make you whatever drink you wanted for free. It was pretty incredible. I literally didn't buy any food for my house for a year, other than snacks, because I was eating all my meals at work for free.

Ahhh I miss it.

We have quite a few free lunches at my place of employment but personally I don't think it does a damn thing for overall morale. Free food isn't going to make up for shitty management(I can't blame the managers but the company's training techniques), insane production standards, hiring people with no work ethic, and absolute crap equipment we have.

Wait, I thought one of the Google rules was you couldn't take any food off "campus"? Or is that just in the movie?

Serious note, I have to ask- You had a job at Google and only stayed for one year??? Don't take this the wrong way, but what the hell is wrong with you?

I don’t think I ever took food home. By eating for free for a year I just meant that as soon as I got in I would grab breakfast, eat lunch during my lunch break, and then grab dinner right before I left for the day. I’m sure I paid for real food on my two days off each week, but five days out of the week I didn’t buy anything.

I only stayed for a year because I was on a one to two year contracted position. Only about 30% of people who work at Google are Google employees. The rest are contracted though third-party hiring firms. They typically save the full time permanent positions for the programmers. So if you’re working on a start-up project, like me, you’re most likely on some kind of contract. It’s to protect them in case the start-up doesn’t last, they can just easily let you go.
