I think most of the extras were shot on video (tho can't remember if PAL or NTSC), tho some may have done in HD, GeoffD says trailers, etc.

There's more discussion about the extras on the 4K Middle Earth Box Set thread as they aren't included in the set

I assume they would've only been completed in SD at the time, and either the materials to upgrade them to HD don't exist or WB doesn't think it's worth the expense to remaster them. The really weird part is that they haven't been consolidated onto Blu-rays like what they did with Blade Runner, which would cut down on the number of discs they need to produce and include in the package.

My apologies, I just checked and the older bluray extended boxset also included the DVDs as well for the special features.
Its just crazy to think that they are again including the exact same DVDs from a set released almost 20 years ago (gasp!) instead of reauthoring them onto a smaller number of blurays instead.

This is a discussion some of us definitely have had in the 4K thread, haha.

It's just silliness. It's going to SAVE you money, Warner, and you'll be able to make MORE of your sets, and perhaps even faster. The people in charge of home video releases just don't think logically; as with many of these studios, they can only think in terms of money, which seems to blind them, ironically enough, to ways they'll make more by juuust trying a little bit harder to not cash-in so wastefully and lazily.

I got the bookshelf set for a penny on eBay (brand new), and aside from a loose page on the Battle of the Five Armies faux-leather book that caused a crease running down Gandalf's cloak (which I can always justify in my head, haha), it's sumptuous and will clearly have to do until the remastered sets go down in price.

Word to the wise: the trailers have only ever been on the theatrical discs, and the DVDs for those releases were newly mastered to remove the trailers from them, so the bookshelf set is actually still incomplete, despite it claiming to have ALL the theatrical release special features. Once again, Warner Bros. to the rescue!!

The picture discs are the same as in the extended edition DVDs, so I doubt Warner pressed these discs especially, they're most likely leftovers from way back when.

It'd have made more sense to release these remastered BDs without the bonus DVDs. Those buying this set are upgrading either from the original DVD sets or the first BD set and have those bloody discs already!

Imagine having the 9 DVDs thrice
Although I'm not really in favour of extras being left off, especially when they are so exhaustive. I prefer being able to retire older sets, rather than having to hang onto them because of missing extras and such. But when they are the exact same discs from the old set

Also, I've just realized, there doesn't seem to be an upcoming 'theatrical-only' Blu-ray set coming out with the remastered versions, which means, unless I'm wrong, the only way to get rid of the old theatrical discs with the trailers is to buy that insult of a box set they're touting to be ultimate.

Did I miss somewhere that the remastered theatrical versions would get their own separate releases? Or are we just assuming they'll get individual releases eventually?

Just wondering...

They stated that there would be the “collectors” set then the Blu-rays would be made available separately in the fall as the anniversary set. Seeing as the “collectors” set was delayed a bit, might see the Blu-ray set more toward the end of the year instead.

I'm actually thinking of getting this set. I have the Extended Edition DVD of Fellowship but only the theatrical DVD release of Two Towers and don't have Return of the King at all. (In fact, I've only just watched the Return of the King earlier this year on HBO Max.) Though I'm guessing I'm probably an outlier, this release isn't useless.

It's up for pre-order now!!!

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Blu-ray Theatricals Remastered Oct 2021

I think this barebones remastered blu-ray set is going to omit all of the extras, but we are still not absolutely positive about that. Could we be so lucky to have the OG trailers slip in there?

Ah, lovely, thanks, glad to have been wrong, haha.

I'll wait for the sets to release and then see if indeed they've been kept.

Cheers for the link!

I hope not. There are only 3 discs in this set. What's the point of remastering, when you have to compress all of that here? This theatrical remastered release is not comprehensive.

That's my sentiment. BD capacity leaves no excuse for omitting vintage bonus features, as these were almost always in SD and use very little space on the disc. However, I've become less bonus-obsessive as my collection increases. Given enough time to replay an old disc, I'll rewatch the movie rather than the special features.

In this particular case, it's ridiculous to reissue the films with 3 DVD's worth of special features when all that material can be put on a BD50. The theatrical cuts boxed set was released in the stupidest configuration of one BD for the film, one DVD for second rate promotional fluff posing as special features (same disc as on the DVD sets) and one disc for digital copy! In essence, you were buying a 9 disc set for three discs only. At least in that case, Warner had the decency of issuing a movie only 3 disc set afterwards, which I bought.

Going to guess the movies won't be available individually? At least not right away.. I'd consider buying Fellowship Extended if it truly is a a big difference from the original blu-ray. The other two are fine as is.

Might consider the extended versions. At that point, I might as well consider the UHD set. I got the old 3 pack of theatrical cuts on black Friday for $3.99 and the 4K sounds like a nice upgrade, but I don't know if I watch these often enough, making the new extended BD set really appealing to me.

If this is remastered why is it still encoded with VC-1 (or is BluRay.com's information just a guess?)

That was happening because the listing for now had the "bundle" of the old discs included (to show which movies are in it scrolling down on the entry). I edited the specs on the set but they get overwritten by bundle info. I've deleted the bundles. I don't think there's a listing for each individual movie BD "remastered" yet. These redone mega-set bundles are always complex entries 'til the smoke clears
