Actually, there are 11 vintage titles in the pipeline. I had forgotten one!

A 100K donation for I, the Jury? Wow... Why on Earth would they want to spend over 5x your proposed budget?
The people calling the shots are old school (think Robert Harris and six figure budgets which include adjoining suites for six months at the Beverly Hills Hotel) so monies are not always spent judiciously.

For instance, they recently put something like $50K into preserving an eight minute color cartoon.

I rest my case!

That being said, I'm very proud that our victories have greatly outweighed our losses.

Not everybody one must do business with acts in good faith, do they?

What a painfully beautiful scan of the frame. Perhaps it's more of an ego and a control issue with the people who took over I the Jury. I'm sorry for the film.

Bob is working on a lot of different fronts at the same time. Based on what I've seen so far, he has always acted in good faith, made personal sacrifices toward the goal when necessary, and delivered the highest quality work. That's real dedication. He and his team have demonstrated time and again they can accomplish everything they set out to.

The results speak for themselves.

I hope the cartoon was a 3-D one, at least.

Bob, are you able to explain why scanning costs as much as it does? It seems to me that digital preservation (as opposed to restoration) ought to be more affordable than it is. I cringe to think that the last surviving materials on, say, serials or early talkies sit evaporating on a shelf while, somewhere, a film scanner sits still and dark, priced into disuse.

I can understand that rare and important film elements must be shipped carefully and handled under laboratory-like conditions, and that those technicians entrusted with such work must command strong salaries. But the overall expense of scanning seems disproportionate, given that modern equipment can presumably do what it does quickly and efficiently.

As I am sure must be obvious, I cannot claim to be very knowledgeable about these matters, but I am always keen to learn. Take us to school.

Scanning prices are all over the map and you can get some VERY good prices. Negotiations are key.

In fact, when I introduced them to the copyright holder, I was initially told we would handle the 3-D aspect of this project. A few weeks later, they claimed the funds they had secured did not include enough money to do it in 3-D and it was very unlikely the $100K would be sufficient to preserve both the left and right sides.
That's painful to read. What a wasted opportunity if that turn's out to be the case.

I really don't understand the thinking on this. 100K and no 3D ? Sad.

Imagine how I feel about it. We would have delivered a fully restored 3-D master for less than 1/5 that cost.

Plus, we would have recreated the lost 3-channel stereophonic sound, not heard since 1953!

I'm guessing these are Taza, Son of Cochise and Wings of the Hawk from the new Kino-Universal deal.

I hope so. Now that we're getting Revenge of the Creature, I think Taza is my next most-wanted Golden Age title.

According to Bob, The Glass Web has music rights issues here in the USA. So it's unlikely to be part of the package. That's why he has been trying to find a European publisher to step up to the plate.

From the Kino Thread...https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...ostcount=22118

No cartoons..Hypnotic Hick would be a great supplement to WOTH (assuming Kino is releasing this or Taza)...where else could it pop up?

I am 100 percent certain Bob is doing everything he can if, in fact, Kino has obtained the rights for some Universal 3-D classics, to get Hypnotic Hick in there as part of the package.

- The Mad Doctor (1940)

- The Glass Web (1953) in 3D (I realize there's a nagging music-rights issue....)
- The Night Runner (1957)
- Girl in the Kremlin (1957) (arguably exceedingly timely.... )
None of these are with KL.

The Capitol Theater in Cleveland presented Gun Fury last night in conjunction with the National Stereoscopic Association annual convention and a local film club. Had I known it was open to the public I would have posted this earlier. It was great to see it on the big screen and the discussion session with the film club was lively and fun. The theater shows a classic movie once a month. Hopefully they will show more 3D in the future.
